Im new to DG and live in a condo with a large deck and have a variety of MG seeds and have never planted them before. Can you tell me what size pots and soil depth is needed and how many for each pot is required to make them healthy and happy. I also need advice for trellis's. I can hang them over the deck, but would like to have some on a trellis as well. I was also wondering if I could grow them threw the railings on my deck and how would I get them trained or do they need some kind of netting to cling to....also what kind of soil is best...I have MG, is that okay? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Any advice for container gardening with MG's
mine are in gallon and three gallon pots. seems they like to be root bound a little and are happy. you can go anysize you want though.
for the one gallon i usually have 2 seeds . three gallon i double it. agian preference here
as for climbing on anything give it to the glory and it will climb it if possible. turn the runners torward the railings and let them go.
walmart sells small trellises but anything actually works. dowels rods from lowes or home depot put in the pot works. anything really.
soil mgs are not picky. Miracile grow is fine.
thre is lots of info in this thread. just click on it.http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/824965/
hope this helps Marie
Last year, I experimented with building a "green wall" to shield my third-floor balcony from the neighbors, a dog-walk, and half a dozen A/C units. I just used a handful of "windowbox" containers, plus a few assorted pots. The morning glories quickly climbed to the top of the balcony railing, and continued up a trellis of cotton twine that I had constructed for them. The twine ran between a board with a bunch of screw eyes that were equal in number and spacing to the vertical parts of the balcony rail. The board was suspended from the ceiling of the balcony by a pair of lightweight chains that looped around two large hooks of the sort usually used to hang bicycles upside-down. Having just the two points of suspension worked well, as it provided a bottle-neck at the top end of the trellis, where I could keep the tips of the vines trimmed, and prevent them from getting out of hand, climbing up onto the roof, etc.
While the window-box planters worked, they were probably too little container for the twenty or so vines that were growing in them, as they had to be watered daily at the height of summer. This year, I think I'll use larger containers along the end of the balcony where I want privacy, and use the window boxes on the long end, for less dense growth.
Overall, the experiment worked - I was shielded from my loud and nosy neighbors (who have since moved out, though the dog run and air conditioners are still there), and as an unexpected benefit, the foliage shaded the glass door that opens onto the balcony from direct afternoon sunlight, and kept the apartment cooler and my electric bills lower. I'm looking forward to the improved version of the green wall this summer, with some interesting new varieties of Morning Glory vines.
(This photo was taken in June - it filled in even more before it peaked and started to lose its leaves in the fall.)
Seamus - Fabulous idea! And it looks really nice! Like a curtain of MGs! How pretty!!!
Thanks for the advice from everyone and I love that idea seamus, look great...any pictures fernman?
Hi sydney480, just wanted to add that you need to give them some nurtients when they are in pots because everything runs out the bottom, so if you used soil from the store, they will have enough for a couple of weeks, but after they bloom or start growing, you may have to supplement with some fert/bloombooster, or fish emulsion for them to look their best and last longer too. I place all my pots under a tree and the tree gets whatever drains out of the bottom, so everybody's happy..lol
