Hey Pat -
You may already have some "good" stuff in there. You can start using it right away -
Put in any food (non-meat) scraps from your kitchen:
Fruit and vegetable peels and leftovers
Coffee grounds
Egg shells
You can add a little paper (shredded paper is great) from time to time. Make sure it stays moist and that the lid is on so you don't get any critters.
If you start now, you may have stuff for Anjl to use when she gets there. The soil and composting forum has lots of topics - some are very detailed, but there's stuff here for first-timers on composting and lasagna beds.

Help! yard design
I'll be headed your way on June 20! whoo hoo! (that is if my vacation request gets cleared!)
mom... I was talking about the japanese maple tree that I bought for you! LOL! see.... ya gotta go back and read that post better :o) tee hee!
Actually, I'll be bringing 2 JM's and lots more goodies :o)
go stick a shovel in the middle of your fron lawn, turn up some of the lawn/dirt and tell me what the soil is like... is it crumbly? or clay? dark colored? moist? (duh! your in WA!lol!) but I need to know if its sopping wet or just moist? or dry? JLMK
That's beautiful Tils.
tills, which JM is it? do you know the name? I love it! it is absolutely beautiful!
I have three... coral bark and 2 others with purple leaves... gotta go look at the tags cause I cant remember the names right now! LOL! must be an 'age' thing!
The name is a (noid), got it as a rescue tree. I'm so good for that, Moma twigs. LOL
But I do know the one next to it, my very little twig I bought was 7" tall in 1986 is now my beautiful Ponderosa pine. just love him, his name is Little Joe LOL
lol! well I'm right there with you on the 'rescuing' :o) I had to rescue these guys from OSH.... and the coral bark I bought mom is rather pathetic looking... would have died on their racks...so it too was a rescue! only about 3' tall... but so was my coral bark when we bought it in Dec and now its over 7' and full!
here are my 'i cant remember your names' JM's one of these grows taller than the other... so I'm bringing the bigger one to moms...
I'm comin in just 2 more days!
YEAH! I still dont know what I'm gonna do to that yard once I get there.... but I'll be there sat morning!
Have a safe journey - and have fun!!
I'll probably be posting on this thread ALOT once I get there! lol! I'm sure I'll have a million questions about what will grow there in sun and shade...etc! lolol!
I'm just a 'see it' kind a planner...more than a 'draw it out' planner.
But I'll post a graph of her yard in a minute....
next is my 'tenative' plan on where to put the beds
the goal is to have no grass at all. for now, I'll be putting in beds and planting the beds, we'll leave grass as her "paths" until we can get material to complete the paths....
this is just kinda a sketch for now.... once I get there, I'll be able to view the area and make sure the layout will work. I am going by memory on the entrance area next to the carport, but I believe she has a cement walkway in that area somewhere! lol!
so, I'm bringing some plants from here, and 2 japanese maples. couple of butterfly bushes and a hydrangea.
anyone have any other ideas on what to put in the beds? I think I'll have to make a tirp to heidi's to get some stuff for her! lol!
