I was a little surprized to see the clarkia has germinated. We have no snow & the temps have been down to -10C at night & not too warm for daytime. Weird, the jugs freeze solid @ night.
1st wintersowed seedlings
Ohhhhhhh - real baby plants! Now I'm going to be out back obsessing over mine until something shows some green :-) Congratulations you lucky girl.
Holy cow - just look at those babies!!!! I should go and see if mine have done anything yet LOL
well I just went out and looked at mine - no signs of anything green.
Nope, mine neither. This time last year I had sprouts in 3 or 4 containers already. Course the temperature here on March 27, 2007 was in the low 20's.
I guess they must just be ready. Haven't checked mine for a couple of days now (I've been resisting) but I don't expect to see any action yet.
How are your babies doing now? Have they grown Joanna?
Yeah but now we get to go out and shovel it all back onto the flower beds!
What fun!
And today it's melting away and nearly gone....
Joanne
Slllluuuurp. That's my garden talkin :)
ps. Luc your baby pics Jo.
I have about 7 jugs that have germinated. It is nothing short of thrilling! There seems to be no rhyme or reason! It is great to see life renewing itself.
Theresa
Finally I have some green showing in 4 or 5 of my wintersowing containers! You're right Theresa, it is thrilling :-)

I wintersowed 24 milk jugs on March 15, and saw tiny signs of life in the Centaurea "Black Ball" jug on April 4th....woohoo! Everything else still looks pretty inert. I've had to water my jugs a couple of times...they seem to be really dry on top, despite the fact that the bottom two inches are still quite frozen. I think I'll wait a bit longer before I put the tender annuals out there too.

What's wintersowing?
Oh I went and checked mine yesterday and two of the poppies and one malva are showing tiny shoots!
"What's wintersowing?"
Tallulah - there's a whole forum here on Dave's Garden dedicated to the topic of winter sowing - check it out - it's wonderful.
Basically, it's sowing seeds in containers (like large plastic milk jugs) in the winter months. The containers have holes in the bottom for drainage, and slits in the top of air transpiration and to allow in moisture. Set the containers outside and leave 'em 'till spring. Presto, you will have seedlings!
Here's a picture of a prepared milk jug.
Becareful - winter sowing is extremely addictive.... :)
Joanne
jo have you sowed any dahlietta seeds this year and if so where did you find seed?
I didn't winter sow those little dahlia's this year (winter sowed Unwin's mix last year). The Unwin's dahlias were great; I got the seed for free from a gardening buddy, but I've seen it in catalogues, just can't remember which ones.
I did winter sow Cactus Dahlias and Collarettes this year, though might have been a silly idea maybe; there won't be enough time for them to mature, I'm sure. Doh.
Joanne
bonus grow_jo even if they do flower late you'll have tubers for next year
