Winter Sowing - Part 2
Oh anagallis THAT blue pimpernel! I love those, and I don't know why I didn't think to start any. And you gave me seeds in October, too. (For shame, kicking self, having hard time, hitting self now, much easier.) Amy, sweetie, honey, you genius, if you could manage to hang on to one or two or three of those for me I would love it. I don't need enough for the whole state. Any of the states. What can I trade you? Monarda, yarrow, heuchera, coneflower, those are all perennials which you may not want have space for. I have honeysuckles - were you looking for a vine? If I can figure out how to start/root a cutting of a honeysuckle, would that be good for your dumpster screen?
I've started putting some things in the ground a few days ago, but then rain yesterday, and a cold from the kids (oh, joy!). But sick or not, I'm going out this afternoon when the sun comes out. I'll leave a note that if I kick the bucket while out there, just cover me over with leaves and dirt - I'll just slowly disintegrate "into the sunset"!!!
Er, I hope we hear from you soon, Sue!
The funny thing about ws'ing that I've found. Sometimes seeds don't germinate. Sometimes only some of the seed germinate. Therefore, I usually sow alot of seed to make up for that. Then, when all the seed germinate........
I did the same thing
Carrie - I'm still alive! I tried those Cold-eeze zinc lozenges for the first time and they worked! The "bulk" of my cold was only two days - amazing - usually they last a week or so.
I counted my containers to see what percentage germinated. Out of 94, 45 didn't make it. But, a few were old seed experiments, and many were water bottles - they probably don't hold the heat well (or something). So next year - all larger size.
I'm having fun cramming seedlings in everywhere!
Wow, Sue, that's a good endorsement! (This is totally off-topic. My 2 asthmatic kids are into exhausting themselves by staying up all night etc. until they get sick. Now I'll make them take Cold-eze zinc lozenges.)
What are you talking about when you say "water bottles"?
C.
NO. You can absolutely still start annuals, and perennials that don't need cold stratification.

Hope this helps! I'm still planning to plant thunbergia alata. Poppies - it depends if it's the annual type or the perennial type and I don't know how it would be affected. The annual type would nearly be blooming by May-June, so it might be too late for them, but the perennial type (I think) bloom the next year. Heck, I barely know what I'm talking about with poppies - I love them and I've been trying to grow them for years with mixed success. Dayliles take years to grow from seed, but why wait longer? And you've got a GH, right? Or am I getting confused yet again? GO FOR IT!
Carrie, "water bottles" are the slim 16-oz. size (Fruit 2-0).
Oh, I used that size my first year - they dried out too fast, I guess, can't really remember. I had good germination, though. Do they have flat bottoms? I used a lot of soda bottles with twisty bottoms (can't explain it well) - the roots got stuck in the twists of the plastic! This year I used mostly half gallon milk jugs.
