Hi Laurie,
Arkansas is AR....Alaska didn't become a state until 1959, much later than Alabama...
What I am Doing in My Garden Now #2
When I was a youngster, we had to wait a couple of weeks for mail from the "Lower 48". Often, it would end up taking 3 or 4 weeks and we'd be able to see from the outside of the envelope that either due to misaddressing or Post Office error, the letter would have first gone to Arkansas or Alabama.
So I almost feel like I have family there . . .
Rachie-YEP-same Harley & Holly.when I do visit WA,I'll probably be getting together with some NHGC gardeners that I met last June,& went on the Gig Harbor Garden Tour with.We had FUN.The more gardeners, the merrier.I notice that many of you here get together fairly often for work parties & stuff. That's great.
Katie-our mail service is MUCH better now.Everything comes by air to Ketchikan(for our area). But if the weather is bad,the floatplanes can't get it out to the other communities on other islands.
Laurie1 & Mark-I couldn't even try to figure out all the little villages & townships in England,so you're doing a lot better than me.
Is the weather improving in England, at least?
Ned - In 1981, when I moved from Alaska, it was, indeed, much better than when I was a child. And my parents only had supplies once a week when the first moved to Lake Minchumina in 1956.
Glad to hear that delivery of mail and supplies to you is more predictable. Still, planning becomes a lot more important than it is down here when you can just run to the store whenever.
Katie
Yep, its milder but still very damp..........
It's 5:45 PM and the snow is all gone. Hope it stays that way. Looks like everything has survived. Even all of us.
I have a sack of rotten oysters in my cart shed. Does anyone think I can use these in the flower beds for fertilizer? Someone gave them to my neighbor, he gave them to me because he didn't want to open them. I guess I didn't either. Had a senior momernt and forgot about them until today when I went out there. Whee
Wheeee! and a Whoaaaaa!
Sorry I just hear going to do it again tommorrow.
I have been here since 1982 and on this property in 1986 this is not the frist time, I have also seen it snow in April. Hate it. Gobal Warming or could it be Elninjo or Elninja?
I had an inch of snow on the ground in my neighborhood and it's just started snowing again.
Beautiful up here in Alaska. Sunny and beautiful. quite warm 45+ F. Tomorrow is supposed to be even warmer. I am driving up north tonight to see the Aurora and hope it is nice.
NO RAIN, NO SNOW, NO SUN. NO COLD TODAY!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT DID IT DO THEN............???
I have not been on this thread since a while back, and it's too long to catch up with!
But here's what I am doing.
Waiting for spring!!!
Also: a lot of my flower starts seem to be failing to thrive, so I am going to give it a shot and plant some seeds again - even if it's a bit late...
I made the mistake of reusing soil from last year, and I should have used fresh sterile soil mix. Live and learn, I will never do this again. Thank God my veggie starts are thriving.
Hi essential
I think everyone is waiting for spring.................. Wish it would get here quicker!!
The only thing i would use last years soil for is adding to the borders........
Mark
Hi EP!
How are you? You're not the only one still starting seeds, so don't worry too much! I have very limited space for bigger seedlings so it's all juggling for me.
IT'S JUST STAYING OUT THERE DOING NOTHING.
WW-Sounds like you have one of those days where you don't know whether to go outside or not.
Got a beautiful day here. One of my neighbors just mowed her lawn.3 days ago it was covered with snow.Temp got clear up to 45* today.
I think we are getting your weather. Our usual weather is somewhere down south of here. It did finally start to sunshine a while ago. And the sun is warm but there is that chill of ice in the breeze off the mountains. I guess it is nice for everyone to get their share of all types of weather. Sure gives one something to talk about when one can't garden. I was just over snooping on the Africian Violet site. I thought I had some beauties in my 30 some, but these were outstanding.
I've got 2 different neighbors mowing their lawns that 2 days ago were covered with snow.Sure glad I don't have much grass-just enough for a weedeater to take care of.The native shrubs are really starting to bud out-salmonberry will be blooming real soon.
I went for a walk today and passed by a salmonberry thicket just blooming, and the pink flowers were quite lovely. This made me think Spring must be here, even though the sky was slushing wet snowish rain on my head as I was coming home. Better than yesterday though, and they say tomorrow there might even be a bit of sun. There is Hope!
Mauryhill-you're about 2 weeks ahead of me.The salmonberry & bumblebees are a sure sign of spring here. Then comes the tree pollen.Say hi to Harley.
I sure did hail in Lynnwood just as I was leaving to go home, it was really bad the closer I got to the ferry, it was almost a white out. Nothing like those little balls of ice bouncing everywhere. But nothing on my side.
I wish it would please stop.....
It didn't seem that cold today, but the snow did melt and was all gone by about 1:30. It just started snowing again about an hour ago and we have another inch.
Holly - I have lots of salmon berries blooming and the Indian Plum and Hazelnut in bloom and hanging down together look great!!
The trillium haven't seemed to mind the snow at all.
No snow here tonight, but it is cold and I'm wearing my coat inside to try to save on the heating bill which was horrendous over the winter.
Ned, Harley says , "Hi" also, and he hopes your health is better now.
My heating bill's been horrendous, too, and I've also been trying to keep the heat down. Don't want to hear that furnace running so much in (almost) April. Still snowing here!!! What???
Snow outside but to my suprise here a MG is blooming in my dining room. A trade from the green elephant swap. Not sure who to congratulate since I got so many plants that day. There maybe snow but the brunnera, edgeworthia, daphne, quince, mytrle, cherry tree, euphorbia, bleeding hearts, pansies, strawbeery tree, and now a MG all blooming! Huge buds on the devil's club, and doesn't evrey weed bloom now? Everything says spring but that g-d forsaken snow!!! PLEASE one of you girls who can talk to the fairies tell them enough!!
Didn't Pixy have some MG seedlings? Maybe it was from her? Do we get a picture?
I will first thing tommorow after work. It should be wide open by then.
Apparently we've angered the faeries. Or they're on vacation. There's so much snow here now that I'm sure they must have left for awhile.
Or the little darlings are buried waist high in it! How tall is a fairy anyway? Seems they would be real small, like 5" tall. Tinkerbell wasn't very big!!
word on the street is this is the doings of the Underwear Gnomes.
They are responsible for a great deal of weather related incidents, wreaking havoc for the Faeries & their beloved flowers.
Faeries have a preference for sunshine; Underwear Gnomes have a predilection for making trouble.
Gordon - I don't think our faery friends are very big - you're right. Of course, unless you have a special gift, you can't see them if you look straight at them, so it's hard to tell. They aren't above playing tricks on us, but this is indeed a pretty heavy-handed trick. Smells like Gnome work to me, too.
We'll have to get some of that German gnome away spray.Achtung!!!
LOL. I needed that. :-)
The fairies have been frolicking up here in AK. Juneau was beautiful from Wednesday through today. It actually is snowing while the sun is out right now. The low cloud is dissapearing and the sun is breaking through. Quite beautiful. This is a photo of a trip I took to Angoon last thursday on the ferry. This is Auke Bay leaving Juneau and looking to the Chillkat Mountains.
Great picture,Soferdig. We don't have that mountain & glacier scenery here on POW Island-just all green hills with lots of snow on right now.
Every hill over 1000 feet has a lot of snow on.We were getting snow all last weekend & into the week, even here in town. It's all gone here, but away from the water there's snow.
Nice pix, Sofer. I, too, love it when it's snowing and the sun is shining. Love being outside when glitter is falling from the skies! B-E-A-U-tiful!
