MOONFLOWER

ANYONE KNOW THE BEST BRAND OF SEEDS TO
BUY , LOOKING FOR THOSE GIANT WHITE MG

Manassas, VA

I found Giant White Moonflower seeds in the ordinary seed display rack at the hardware store (I think it was Home Depot). I don't have the original envelope, so I don't know the brand, but I'd guess that it was Burpee or Ferry Morse. The pack was maybe a dollar - certainly less than two.

So far, I've only started two of the seeds, but they germinated right away, and have been growing happily in my window ever since January. They're both covered in large buds, which are threatening to bloom, hopefully any day now. Considering how big the buds are now (about the size of my thumbnail, mostly), I'm curious to see how big a ripening seed pod gets.

The seed pods don't get as big as I was expecting, but certainly bigger than the normal-sized MG pods. It's the large white blooms that surprised me my first year growing them! You are gonna love them!

I bought a variety of seeds from a place on DG called Tricias and she is located in Texas and includes free shipping, it was fast and very reasonable prices. I have a variety of morning glories, and also some moonflowers, but havent started them yet, so cant answer that question.
Beckygardener, I just finished reading your LONG thread about MG's and was going to write and ask you some questions, but since your here..did you plant everything in containers? How big of pots and how deep should the soil be

Thanks

HI dellers

First please dont type in all caps its a form of shouting in computer and its just loud.

and for moonflowers the brands on the market are basically the same plant just different synonmyms of the name. which ever you but they are so easy to grow. impomea alba is usually the one you see on the market or ipmoea noctiflora. burpees is good and so are the rest who sell them.

some people nick them then soak them over night some nick then plant and keep warm some like me just plant and keep warm. there are so many methods but all work.

heres a link to tell you all the names it goes by

Moonflowers are super easy to grow and a joy to watch and smell! They open very fast, and you can sit there and watch them open in the evenings. Be prepared to see Hummingbird Moths, they are huge and love the moonflowers. It's so cool! Pods open easily when dry and then store in a cool dry place. Good luck!

Hi sydney - I planted most of my MG seeds in pots, but the Moonflower seeds I planted right in the ground next to my fence w/attached trellis. I didn't nick or pre-soak them. The majority of Morning Glories that I grew were I. nils in pots. They like sun and warm/hot temps, but it's best not to let the roots get totally dried out ... so with some of them, I shaded the pots by placing them behind other low-growing plants.
I use Moisture Control potting mix by MiracleGro which also has slow-release fertilizer in it. My vines seemed to thrive in that soil with the ocassional watering and Bloom Booster liquid fertilizer. I am a newbie too. Only started growing MGs last summer, so I learned a lot, but have soooo much more to learn! Good luck trying your hand at growing these amazing vines.

Moon flower seeds.. Hi all..well I have some..they are Lavender, it says..they were pre-drilled..so I soaked the first batch..in three days there were white..root/ spike stilling up.. .Planted thinking they would shoot up more from there..but they turned around and ducked thier head back in to soil....what is going on?...So then I soaked three more seeds..same thing..but this time..I pulled and tugged gently..on the white root/I thought..and there was a leaf...?...Very strange..what is happening..? Anyone have this happen?...thanks ahead...

I have noticed that sometimes the first leaf will be tucked down into the soil. The stem will be white or very light colored. If it is a long stem, often that will happen. I usually watch it for a day or so and then do what you did ... gently pull the leaf up out of the dirt. From there it should grow just fine. The I. Alba are large vines with big leaves. Be sure to either pot it up in a much bigger pot or plant directly into the ground.

thanks...on the ones that it turns around..will it come up again?
