The last freeze of 2008... we hope

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

My yard is the live or die after a year yard. After a year it needs to do well without much help for me. If it dies to the ground and grows back the next year fine, if it's going to just look rough every year then I won't bother.

Cut all the brown fronds off those sagos. There are some that say it stimulates new fronds quicker.

I'll do that today. :)

Yes on the sago. I would only clip a few off at a time but I don't think that matters, I just do it that way. In the center you'll see spikes and those are new fronds. You'll be surprised how many will start growing when you do some pruning.

Yeah normally they grow slow as a snail. I think I've seen one or two sets of new fronds in an entire year.

IMO, this is a good site with lots of info on sagos.

Super site, ardesia! I've noticed the Sagos several of my neighbors have grown for years have suffered more from this past winter's yo-yoing temperatures than usual. (I'm trying to get the courage to ask for some pups!)

Oddly, my sago looks pretty good, but my Chinese fan palm looks pathetic.

Hrm, maybe I should have knocked on wood last time. There's a new system pushing in this weekend which they say *might* cause patchy frost here Monday night or Tuesday. Right now it looks like cloud cover will keep the temps high enough. If frost is a possibility... my yard is seriously going to look like a circus is in town with all the tents.

Maybe the whole April 15th thing still holds true after all. I think next Tuesday IS the 15th ironically.

I'm going to keep my fingers (and toes) crossed this one stays warm. 80 on Friday, low 60's by Monday. Ugh.
