Sticker shock - gasp!

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

I had my 'back 40' (actually closer to 10 acres) planted with soybeans by a nearby farmer for the past couple of years. After last year's hay debacle, I decided I might be better off using my land at least for pasture, if not actual hay production. Sanford, the guy who does a lot of the jobs I can't do myself (he was my fencer, put gutters up, etc.) also happens to be handy in the farming area and proposed sowing my '40 with Orchard grass, a little wheat, and some clover. On advice of the Co-op guy, we threw in a bag of perennial Rye. I went up yesterday and purchased it all....

$500 bucks. OMG. I nearly fell over. And I still have to pay the Ag Svc for the rental of the seed drill, Sanford for his time, gas and tractor use.

Evidently there's been some kind of problem with Orchard grass seed and it's nearly tripled in price in the past year. The Ag officer said it was actually pretty tough to find it.

If it ain't one thing....
