I'm back

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

We put the Orange Sunshine back in a hanging basket today. We got the biggest one we could find then hung her in a big Oak tree. We will be trying several Brugs in baskets this year to see which ones will grow the way we want.

Great!

Love to see what you have coming up. This is a great start of spring
for us in snow country.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Ken, are there two different Orange Sunshine Brugs?

Burnley, United Kingdom

Hi Ken
Good start
Hope the idea works.
Hanging baskets full of Brugs :-)
How you goin to keep the watered ? LOL
Alan

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

There is only one Orange Sunshine, we just fixed up a basket for Joan.

Alen, it will work. We had the same Brug in a basket last year and she did very well. We put her back in a pot for the Winter and now back in a basket for the Summer. We took cuttings off her last Fall and now she is about the size she was before we cut on her.

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

That looks nice! Is Orange Sunshine a miniature?

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

OS is not a mini, it just seems to cascades a lot and never stops blooming. We tried Day Dream in baskets last year but even above the Y cuttings seemed to grow strait up. We are testing several other Brugs to see which grows the way we want.

bettydee asked: "Ken, are there two different Orange Sunshine Brugs?"

Someone on eBay was selling a Brug under the name of Orange Sunshine, but the pic they used was not a pic of OS. The Brug they used for the pic was very nice (long tendrils, good flower form) and being a real orange-lover I would really like to have it.

We registered the real Orange Sunshine last year.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Maggi, Ken, thanks for the information on Orange Sunshine.

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Orange Sunshine was in a hanging basket last season, only 12" plastic. The basket for this season is 24 " and has a rigid pressed peat liner. I used Soil Moist in the potting mix this year.

I potted OS into a regular pot for the winter. Here it is in it's glory on the 2nd of March (3 weeks ago). It's set a lot of buds again, I hope they don't drop due to the potting up.

How do you keep the roots small enough to fit into such a small container? Mine seem to have huge roots.

Charlene

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

May I ask if there is more than one plant per pot??

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

The big OS that we replanted into the big pot is only one plant. The new little pots that we have just potted up have three plants per pot.
If you never put a Brug into a large pot, it's roots can not grow as large. Every time we repot it we trim the roots back unless we are stepping it up to a larger pot.

Ken, my brugs that I started from cuttings in the fall are in 3 qt. pots and roots are hanging out the bottom. I thought that I would have to move them up to bigger pots due to the roots. Do I cut off the excess roots that are hanging out?

What do you mean trip the roots?

Charlene

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

We only trim the roots if we are keeping them in small containers, like the baskets.

Oh my - only introduced to brugs through this forum and fell in love, now I know they can be hanging in pots I am infatuated, can you tell me if any of these can be for hanging please:
Peanutty Rosalla,
savoy truffle x s. perfection
Pink Perfection x Butterfly kisses
Rubiline x rubino x peanut x chesa

Can anyone spare sedds of OS?

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Sue,
Brugs don't come true from seed (with one or two exceptions). You will have to get cuttings of Orange Sunshine. Those are crosses you are referring to above and the same holds true for them. You will have to grow out the seed and get them beyond the "Y" formation before you'll be able to tell if they would be good candidates for hanging baskets.

One word of warning. Be careful from whom you buy Orange Sunshine. There is at least one person on eBay who sell what he claims is Orange Sunshine, but it's not. This is what it should look like:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/158583/
Kenboy and maggidew were the seedling parents and JT (gone2seed) was the hybridizer. I have a very small plant of OS, but it too small to take cuttings. Poor thing is nude and missing branches due to the hoards of grasshopper plaguing Texas. Have you check the MarketPlace here at Dave's.

St John's, Antigua and Barbuda(Zone 10a)

Thanks Betty Dee - where I live I cannot bring in cuttings - the customs department will seize them so I need seed only - do they take an age to get to the Y? I will check The Market Place - havn't found that one yet ...

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hey Ken, I am glad I am not the only one growing brugs in hanging baskets..I have my seedlings in the ground, the standards in large pots and the cuttings in hanging baskets.. can't wait to see the different results.. all the ones on the south fence have buds. and I had a bloom on monster white already.. my poor snowbanks is not doing so well.. help! Does it like shade or sun? It has new growth, but isn't getting very tall..
