Need help - bird feeders???

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

The last time I bought BOSS at farm and fleet (in a shell) it was 16.99 a 50 pound bag. Last fall it was 14.99. Don't know how much it is now.

I went to the bird store today and the lady told me bird seed prices went up
twice in the past month!!

We have our seed from Mass. Audubon Society, ordered in the fall.

The WhiteHeaded Woodpecker is a treat to watch especially when they start bringing the young to the feeder.
A few years back I had a smallish female bring her over-sized juvenile male and it was a hoot!
Reminded me of the old cartoon "Baby Huey" as she repeatedly stuffed him with suet.
They are devoted parents. And I believe they are pretty far west birds, the Rockies would be 'east' for them. They tend
to stick to the woods and seem quite shy so I doubt they get too close to urban areas. (just my guess)

We also get the Pileated nesting here but not at the feeder so far. Downy and Hairy are also regular visitors.

We do live in a very interesting area, our home is in what is called 'sub-Alpine forest' and yet 10 miles away it becomes
'semi-arid'. We are surrounded by National and State Forest so virtually no development for many many miles in 3 directions. We have a creek that runs through one side of our property and the combination of water and wilderness
makes for great wildlife habitat. (thus the bears, cougars, coyotes, and many others).

As to seed/feed ....
Won't even put out niger seed anymore... the siskins will eat you out of house and home for that stuff.
Sunflower seed we get ours bulk from a local Ag co-op at $12 per 50LBs. I believe they get it within state
or just across the border in Canada; so not a lot of freight added on. It is not the cleanest but the birds don't
seem to mind sorting twigs from seed.

I just got my new feeders from Rachel's Robin, and the no-no feeder looks interesting, certainly sturdy!
Just have to get them high enough so the bears don't get at them LOL!

Thanks to all for your help and hope I can repay with some better pictures soon.

It's not for everyone to live so remote, but I love it.
I only go to 'town' once or twice a month if I have to! ;)

This will give a bit of an idea of how far the next 'feeding station' is.
And it is only 1 direction. LOL
