Golden Euonymus pruning

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

I love this plant - the colors and leaf form are great! I'd like to put two of them in big pots on each side of my front door, but they would need to be pruned to stay about 2-1/2' wide. Has anyone ever pruned one to grow more vertically? Does the plant mind it?

Although I'm not familiar with your variety, almost any shrub-type euonymus can take any amount of pruning. Just whack off anything that grows horizontally and it'll keep growing up vertically. Watch for euonymus scale though. (Post a pic if you can.)

Hoosier, I'm one too - born in Bloomington and raised mostly in Ft. Wayne! Have to say I prefer the growing season down here in Knoxville, though.

Thanks for the encouragement on pruning. Here's a photo of a golden euonymus in another part of my yard. Nice plant!

Nice shrub. Don't happen to know the cultivar name, do you? Regardless, I know for sure you can train it to be an nice looking upright shrub. Just keep pruning off the growth that comes out the sides. Unless you want a real formal look, I wouldn't shear it, but rather use pruners to clip off individual shoots that sprout outwards. Shouldn't be a lot of work anyway. Fellow Hoosier eh? My wife is an IU grad. I should think you'd love gardening in Zone 7a. You have at least, what, six weeks more of a frost-free season than central Indiana? Milder winters too. And there's always the mountains, and Asheville (I love Biltmore). Have fun with your euonymus!

The cultivar is: Euonymus japonicus 'Aureo-marginatus'

Both DH and I are IU grads, and we loved living in Bloomington years ago. Ft. Wayne is too much like Michigan (weather-wise) for my taste now. Gardening here is great!

Bloomington certainly is an oasis of culture and liberal thinking in a desert of conservatism, but that is slowly changing for the better (the desert part that is). Fun place. We drive down at least a few times each year, making a loop from Indy to Bloomington thru Brown County and back. Fun shopping, eating, and a beautiful drive, especially in April and October.
