That looks like it might be a mantis egg case. How big is it?

And what a beautiful sight that tree is!

It was a pleasure to find these beautiful blooming trees are everywhere in in the wild. The nest is approximately 1.5" across. Thanks, Claypa.

You know, I was thinking about this tree... I don't think Hawthorns are close to blooming yet, even down South. Washington Hawthorn's leaves are toothed and almost triangular, kind of like a red maple. Not sure what it is, though.

If it's not an egg case it could be a paper wasp nest .. could you take another picture lily and back up a bit so it in better focus? Do you see any critter going in or coming out?

Hi X.

The picture was taking during a nature walk in the wild. So no I didn't see any thing with it. Claypa, Hawthorns maybe not in full blooms in your zone, but they're here. Some almost leafed out.

Hi Kim! (Lily_love)
I could be wrong, but I think that your Hawthorne tree is in front of another tree with the blooms (like a Bradford Pear) Looks like your Hawthrone has nice green leaves, but the pear tree is the one with all the flowers. Are we looking at two different trees?

I'm with Claypa -- I also think the 'thing' in the tree is a very large Mantid egg case.
You could go see it again, and clip off the branch and bring it back to your place. :^)
You could have free mantises. Cool.

Hi Paul,
It's a real confusion for me here. From a distance, I can't differentiate Bradfords from Serviceberry and Hawthorns. I'll try to take some more pictures when I go back the area later this week. The nest was empty I think.

You actually have pictures of 2 different types of mantids. We have both here also in Southern Maryland. The round one is from the large parying mantid and the small one is from the little brown spotted mantid. The little brown ones don't get larger than about 2" while I've seen the green and brown ones here reach 8".

Thanks DB, I'll be looking out for any more of those nests.
