i have had pots that stay in the uncertainty corner for several years...sigh... right now there are probably about 20 different things over there that seem to have survived the winter (hattie burton rose, a dwarf catalpa that stays 12ft tall, a Van Deman quince, an irresistable magnolia from Klehms, as of yet unrecognizable perennials ) I think my excuse is since I plant things in various folks gardens, I am not just indulging myself.....hmmmm.........where will they go????????
So what are you growing new in 2008?
Huh, never heard of a "dwarf" catalpa!
Almost forgot.... I also planted allium for the first time and rudbeckia-fulgida http://www.bluestoneperennials.com/b/bp/RUFFS.html
I also ordered "Dark Towers"----hope it's hardy--no growth yet on my butterfly bushes--what are some of the new varieties, Victor? I have space for one more. Sara--what is the magnolia like? There are some beautiful yellow ones on my son's in-laws property--also some river birch that I envy.
the butterfly bush i planted last fall pushed out one tiny leaf today.... the others... nothing yet
Robin - the English Butterfly series.
A nice, brand new dwarf blue is 'Lo & Behold'.
That's good to know, Victor. I love the blue.
I'd love to try a dwarf. They just take up so much room otherwise. I just looked, not a bump of growth to be seen. Well, since everyone else's seems to be taking their time I guess I won't worry yet. My little 50% off unlabled iris is showing some good signs of growth, so that's a happy thing. Ngam, those are mighty fine looking plants! Will you be putting them outside, or hanging on to them inside for a few more weeks?
I got my Fairweather order today that Victor recommended to me. The boxes were next to impossible to open, and then I had to deal with the cleaver tying that the did to keep them from not moving, but I final got the 9 plants that I ordered out and they are terrific. Victor, thanks. I will have them in the ground tomorrow. Patti
Knew you would like it!
Here is a picture of the goodies. The only one not showing any green is the crape. It is the tallest one. Patti

Nice - how big does Red Licorice get??
At 10 years 7 feet high x 5 feet wide
Fothergilla 'Red Licorice' - Fothergilla
Super-fragrant licorice-scented spring blooms inspired Dr. Paul Cappiello and John Watcher to propagate and distribute this selection from the Bernheim Arboretum in Kentucky. Fall color can be a fine cherry red in areas where summers are moderate. Z. 4-8
FOTRED 12-15 in. - $19.95
The parent plant showed outstanding, cherry red fall foliage and sweetly-scented spring flowers. Fall color seems to develop better in north and mid latitudes. Grows well in moist soils in full sun to partial shade.
Might be adding that one next! I really loved fothergillas.
I am excited to report that some of my caladiums from the co-op came zooming up out of the ground today! Isn't it wonderful when things start popping up?!!! I'm bringing some of the caladiums back with me.....hope they don't get the idea to pop up before then!!
when you coming back up?.... and are you excited to see this home?
Terrific plants there Patti. Looks like you will have lots of updates to show us this fall.
As for my plants they will have to wait a few weeks. First because where the ferns are going needs some work and also the soil is very wet right now. They are in 4 or 5 inch pots so they can wait it out on the porch under cover and get hardened off some first. Also I have about ten DLs that I want to divide and get planted by the road in the new shrub border before any new arrivals get planted. The weather doesn't seem to be cooperating either. I was hoping to get three shrubs that arrived ten days ago in the ground today if the rain last night didn't make everything too soggy. More rain coming tomorrow and for the weekend.
Is the locust a scented tree? There are many in my area and come a certain time in spring, there is a heavenly scent that is everywhere. It seems to coincide with the white, wisteria type blooms.
I bought 'Adonis Blue' butterfly bush a few years ago. It's not blue at all. More like purple. How blue is 'Lo & Behold'?
So many places advertise blue plants that aren't blue but closer to either lavender or purple. Lies abound when it comes to photos, too. It's the benefit of DG to have folks who can tell you the truth about a color or seeing the plant in bloom, Harper.
It's true! I can't stand that they give us false hope. I'd just rather know exactly what I'm getting.
I don't have it, Harper. I find Ellen's Blue to be close to true blue.
Not the greatest pic but here are the new trees planted in what will be the new shrub border. This is looking towards the road, they are not planted in a straight line. Every other one is out two feet from the previous tree and they are planted ten feet on center. This border is going to take me all season to get looking half way decent, but at last it is started.
great solution for privacy, ngam. Is that your fence?
No it is the neighbor's fence and it is ready to fall down. There used to be all trash trees and brush here. DH cut them all down and leveled the space. There is a drainage ditch between the drive and the area. I hope t get some more shrubs in soon.
You've made a good start.
How lovely! WFF?
Cleaned the front yard and mowed the lawn for the first time this year, took all my bonsai out and transplanted one. (still have to find a place outside for 3 more that I have). Also have an apple tree and 3 rose bushes to plant tomorrow. While drinking some Figi water and enjoying a break outside UPS drove up and delivered this guy. DW saw it and 'made' me order another! ☺
Chaenomeles Crimson & Gold
Yep, first time I order from them. ☺
She's a beaut...wish I had a spot for one. I would also die for a spot for a crepe myrtle, but I don't
That's a lovely plant. Maybe WFF is bouncing back.
it used to be years ago, White Flower Farms and Wayside Gardens were about the only mailorder places for perennials and shrubs. They both were top notch. In recent years neither have been rated that good.
But sure nothing to complain about with that plant.
That is a beauty alright. I can see why you wanted another. I have the 'Iwai Nishiki' coming from them, I hope mine looks that good.
It was a gorgeous day here today, I did manage to get the fothergilla 'Bl;ue Shadow' planted and a few things pruned. Tomorrow and through the weekend we are supposed to get more rain. Good for the trees and shrubs but not so much for the gardener.
Very nice looking, WC. I received a Hydrangea 'White Dome' from Paradise Gardens today.
WC2, how big will your Chaenomeles get? That's a beautiful plant. I have a 'Cameo' that I got from ForestFarm last year. I can't wait to see it bloom, but I have a feeling it won't be this year. It's a pretty small plant. But it will only get to 3-4'.
Wow--the plants all look great--nothing shipped to me yet, but I ordered no shrubs--changing my mind after seeing the quince--knockout color! Thanks, Victor, for the tip on the English series--are they available by mail order? I know you've mentioned Fairweather--shall I try there? Anita--locust is highly scented--it is growing along a nearby highway & river, & the scent knocks you out---my hubby, from NH, had a custodian at his school who would say "Don't the locust smell sweet" --I hear that all the time during blossom time.
Robin - Fairweather doesn't carry them. Garden Crossings and deerresistantplants.com do.
