Can you smell it from here????

WOW! Now I have zone envy! LOL Tell me what the Mexican flame vine smells like? It is attractive...

I noticed buds on the Confederate jasmine tonight and also the Brunfelsia. Goody, goody!

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Toy, those are beautiful. My mexican Flame vine is so full of flowers that I had to tie the trellis to the fence to keep it from leaning over. Buggie, it smells good, but I can't tell you what it smells like.

Sigh...... You have all the nice smells and I stink like woodsmoke from boiling maple sap all day..... ( okay so I have major zone envy now....)

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

MMMMmmm.... maple syrup and wood smoke sounds good too! An Uncle in MN used to cook that off ~ what a memory. They would come south for the winter but hurried home for maple sap harvesting.

South Florida, FL(Zone 10b)

Podster, I am having a very hard time trying to describe what the Mexican Flame Vine smells like. It's kind of like a mum except sweet. I have extras if you are interested.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Toy747 ~ thank you for your kind offer... right now, my plate is way too full! I have many plants still in pots. This spring I removed a decorative fence and when additional house repairs are completed, I intend to plant Brugs, YTTs and Sweet Olive along the "fragrant" walkway. But, now that the fence is gone, I will need an arbor or trellis or another fence for vines....

Does your Mexican flame vine produce seed or propagate by cuttings or? If seeds are a possibility, I would love some... That way I am not as pressured to plant immediately. pod

South Florida, FL(Zone 10b)

I've never looked for seeds. For propagating I just lay it on the ground and a couple of days later it has roots.
I just love this vine. It blooms non stop, attracts butterflies and smells great.
I'll check for seeds tomorrow.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Please let me know on seeds. If not, I may still be tempted. At least if I have something to tempt you with??

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

well, the deed is done. I guess having that grapefruit tree in the pot was bugging me enough that hubby pulled it out for me today and we planted it inground. Then I planted my satsuma Kimbrough in the pot. Ahhh, such a sense of accomplishment.

Here is the Rio Red in its new home

here's the satsuma. It looks so little compared to the grapefruit. That is about how little the grapefruit was when I initially planted it. I'm so guilty of buying teenie, tiny, cutesy, wootsey plants w/o taking into account the giants they are going to become. Hopefully I have learned my lesson.

The satsuma should be more than OK growing in this pot.

Good going! Makes me want to rip my G'fruits out and throw them in the burn pile ~ LOL

BTW, thanks for the link and info but I really do think mine are failures. Doomed! 8 )

Podster -Could you graft a more desirable grapefruit on your "monsters"? I have grapefruit that have been grafted onto trees like your. If a shoot with thorns comes up I cut it off and only the good stuff continues to grow.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

You are right Katiebear. I have been told this has reverted to the original graft material. That is exactly what it would be good for...

It is all my DMs fault. When we were young, she would keep a 2 or 3 foot tall grapefruit tree as a pot plant. It either never grew in MN winters or she would start another... I don't recall but thought it was neat so planted the seeds. Then, when they grew large DH said don't get rid of them. Then I thought they might actually produce... Now, their care is on me. A friend said pop them in ground. I say why?

mulege, Mexico

You could try grafting them with something you want. Then if the graft doesn't take maybe the tree would die!

There's an idea... Not a grafter here but then this would be the way to learn. Thanks Katiebear

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Y'all talked me into it... since I posted here, I have picked up a Satsuma Miho ~ looking forward to grazing... lol

The petunia that started this thread is full of blooms and putting out major fragrance!

The society garlic has a pungent almost skunky smell... fragrant in another sense of the word.

Smelling wonderful, especially when blended with the petunias.

Brunfelsia ~ Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow...

Ohhhh can't wait!!! They look gorgeous!!!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Can't wait? Did you get a YTT? You will love it!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

No (hangin' head) I just meant....scents of any type (good smellin' ones that is)...hmmm...gonna have to look up that YTT (she types while humming Michael Jackon's "Pretty Young Thing")

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Now LOOK what you've done...gotta find me one of those!!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Hey Kristi if you root me some, I'll send you the DGD in trade...ok well I guess I can't do that but I'll find something for you.....*begging here*

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Chantell ~ Sweet as she is (and close to the ground ~ LOL) I must say no. I promised I would resist anything else that needs feeding or painting! 8 )

There are some different YTTs and I have two. Have never found cultivar names on either. This is an old one. It is potted and has some suckers. I do not know how long it would take to get it to bloom but I would gladly share. I'm a novice and nervous about cuttings here.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Rotflol!! Believe me...I've told you how cutting challenged I am...if you find suckers....THAT would be MAH-VEL-OUS. Hey now....DGD feeds herself now....and I wouldn't paint her...she's sorta a nice color "as is" LOL

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Now, I KNOW you can smell this all the way from east Texas.

Confederate jasmine. Blooms and fragrance! The best of both worlds.

oh my confederate jasmine is blooming now too! On my sunporch.

This plant has knock our socks off fragrance. I love it. Don't you wish it would bloom the full summer... 8 )

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

yes I love it and it is so easy to care for inside. I really want to try the yellow variety too!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I am amazed you are able to keep it indoors and inbounds! Do you keep it pruned back?

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

In the fall I cut it back to about 8 inches high. It stays dormant and then buds out in February. It grows like crazy all summer.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Now the Jasmine I've been enjoying...at least my Maid of Orleans...ahhhh love it!!!

Marietta, NY(Zone 5a)

Lavender4ever,

Does that jasmine go dormant like Brugmansias do? I've always admired Confederate Jasmine when I've visited south of here, but didn't think I could have it last from season to season unless I had a heated greenhouse. You are in the same zone as I am, so I'm very curious.

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Well it does not lose it's leaves at all. I just cut it short and put it in the darkest corner of my sunroom and give it just enough water so that it won't dessicate. It does not grow at all until February and then it starts to bud. After the last frost I move it outside to the shade and it is in full bloom by then and I gradually move it into the sun and it keeps blooming until July but not as profusely as late april and may. It is a very easy plant. Just make sure when you cut it back to leave it outside for a few days because it bleeds latex like stuff.

Marietta, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks! I can get one now!!!!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

That reminds me... have you ever done cuttings? I tried once and did about 6... one rooted. I look for vines laying on the ground hoping they have rooted but nothing. Any experience anyone?

South Florida, FL(Zone 10b)

If you bury some vines laying on the ground and leave them for a few of weeks they usually root. I have also had success with cuttings dipped in Dip 'n' Grow.
