What is in this picture?

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Nature has a wonderful way to blend. Esp if you are a preditor and you are hunting around a bird feeder.

I would have never seen this guy, but I was drawn to a lump in the tree, that on closer inseption (with binoculars) was a balled up, shivering squirrel, with his tail over his head. That was a big clue that something was out there.

This was taken before sunrise yesterday at full voom through the winter windows. See if you can spot something in it.

Next picture will be a crop shot of the bird.

The lowlight picture does not crop well, but you can see this sharp-shinned hawk sitting on the post. His color blends so well with the post that it just looks a bit taller than normal.

Even with the binoculars, I almost missed him, it was the dark top of his head that caught my eye, then I saw the post had eyes. LOL

After about 10 minutes he flew off after missing a chickadee.

I could spot, him but it would be really diffucult. My dh say hawks have become like 'shiny objects' to me!! lol

When we drive to the town where we shop, it a 45 min 40 mile drive, I count the hawks along the way! I am knee deep in this bird thing! LOL

LOL… same here. My DH sort of chuckled and rolled his eyes as I counted hawks along the highway on a drive home yesterday. Counted about 10. But of course, I could not get him to pull over so I could whip out my camera!!

I see this guy in nearly every day. He is really a handsome bird.

I love his eyes. He really sees everything that is going on. I have to say the other birds don't fall for his camo tricks. They sure know when he is around and stay far away.

They are a beautiful bird! I have seen my Chickadees kind of tease him by coming into the yard while he's in plain site but the the hawk moves to another perch thats in between where the Dees are coming from; such a game!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Yes, our chickadees tease this one too. The hawk is fast, but not as fast as those little guys. Just this morning I saw him on a bush and the chickadees were fluttering all around him, on the other side.
Must drive him crazy.

I wish ours would sit still long enough for me to get more pics!! Dang Sharpie's and Cooper's are about impossible to get a shot of. As soon as I see them, they are off! I have had lots of nice blurs! lol

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I am surprised Nanny. You take such wonderful pictures. I could never compare.

I agree, that this guy does not pose. I have seen him a hundred times and have only been able to take a picture of him twice. He can see me in the window. Sometimes he just must be very, very hungry and not care about that crazy woman with the camera.

Wallaby, I think zone 5 is a frits limit, and it was planted in the open. You aren't supposed to water after they bloom, but it got rain. I might try it here in a drier sheltered spot someday. I'd like an orange and yellow one.

Thanks Ruth, it was fun to have the geese just down the road. Better have the camera ready because if they see you first, off they go!

Really neat pictures everyone!

I THOUGHT it was a hawk in the first picture. He is well blended. We have an eagle that sits in the same spot all the time.

I wish I had the camera ready to shoot what the bird drove off the tree trunk the other day. A RAT!!! He came back and DH beaned him with a rock. I would have taken his picture, but he was a bit icky.

I shot this bird all the way as I walked to the end of the block. Not sure of it's real name.

Thanks Resin!!

I was calling it a Sparrow Hawk and sometimes a Perigrine. I never took the time to really identify it. They did release and put up nesting boxes for Perigrines in a town 20 minutes from here in ''92.''

Saw one of those for the first time last year, a male. He was really beautiful.

I have a 10X zoom on the camera and wish it was more. Sometimes you just can't get close enough to a lot of things.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I agree billy. You have to bring the action to you!! I now have all of my feeders pretty close to the house!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Smile, I take a lot of pictures thru the windows!

Like this flighty one!
