We don't have dewberries, but we do have blackberries and raspberries. Oh, yes, and blueberries and wild apples, and chokecherries and elderberries.
And, morel mushrooms.
The first set of babies have arrived!
I love chokecherry jam, the chicks look awesome, so dang cute. thanks for posting all the pictures. Good luck with all, granny hope your weather clears up a bit.
Oh granny your making me hungry and jealous. You have lots of good stuff.
The chicks are adorable arn't they. They're growing fast too.
I love being able to go out and pick berries and other fruit that nature put out there for us. I have also planted a few domestic fruit trees. Oh, I forgot, we also have access to black walnuts.
And yes, the chicks are adorable.
Did you know that walnut hulls and walnut tea is good for getting rid of parasites. My sister dewormed a dog with black walnut tea.
A thought just occured to me. Wonder if the black walnut would work on chickens to get rid of parasites and mites.
Don't know, but someone on here was saying that wood ashes worked for that. I have some and am going to let my kids dust themselves with it.
hmmm interesting, wood ashes. I've never heard of that one either.
Well, whoever it was will probably see the posts and let us know who they are.
I have a thornless blackberry, and several noid blackberries
started, and they are showing new growth since I planted in the
fall. Yea! probably not much til next year, but that's ok. I
love picking (and eating) homegrown berries. and cobbler.
My last dog (rest his soul) would eat pecan leaves, but
only at certain times, so I think it was instictive for him to
ward off parasites.
We put the wood ashes out yesterday for the girls, but of course, it had to rain today, so I don't know how much good it is going to do. We will have to get another bucket of them for later.
I also have thornfree blackberries. We had them when we were downstate, and because our ground was so rich, we ended up being able to get about a peck every year from, I think, four plants. Ours did bloom last year, but we had a drought so we didn't get but 2 berries off of the plants. Oh well, maybe this year. And hopefully we will get wild ones too.
well, i tossed out plenty of ashes, it hasn't rained, but the chickens just lookd at me funny. may have to wait till the weather is aobut to change, that seems to be when they want to take a bath...
I thought dust baths did that job??
MollyD
i suppose it depends what they dust in. i won't use sevin dust or anything chemcial, & i am always dumping wood ashes in the garden somewhere, so i intentionally dumped it in their favorite dusitng spots inside the pens...
an ounce of prevention...
well at least it's free!
MollyD
yes it is.
I will need to remember wood ash. Thanks. Since we
have a couple acres yet to clear, I will have plenty.
