Our first order from Ideal arrived Thursday. So far all are well and healthy and already spoiled. This is a mix of Silver Sebrights, Birchen Cochins, Blue Silkies, Buff Orpingtons and Australorps.
The first set of babies have arrived!
Very nice! I LOVE my silver sebrights.
Such beauties. good pictures.
well, congrats! love your mixture!
can you tell me which are the cochins? i am still trying to ID my asst bantams...
The Cochins are the black and yellow ones that are small. We have 2 Australorps in the mix that are the same color but a bit larger because they are standards and the cochins are bantams. We have a total of 5 Cochins and they are all mostly black with yellow bottoms but we have one with yellow on its face as well. They are adorable.
The sebrights are so tiny and cute. We have one sebright from a mix of bantams we got last year and he is a sweety. We are hoping that most of the Sebrights we got (5) end up being hens.
Beautiful bird. :)
Thanks I don't want to high jack your post I am going to post some of him and couple of other new residents in another thread.
Last year I hatched four silver sebrights and bought four from Ideal. I got all pullets from ideal and one roo from the ones I hatched!
Have you seen Goldens? Or buffs? I bought a pair of goldens, they are such nice birds. I wonder if you crossed golds with silvers if you get buffs? Hmmmmmmm Thanks again! He's a cutie!
look like a couple of bossy britches to me!
I have not had or personally seen goldens or buffs, but I'm sure they are beautiful as well. Not sure about the breeding thing. I know with cochins if you breed 2 blues you can get blue, black or splash. Not sure how that works.
Smedge, they're beautiful! I love that you caught one
yawning, or clearing it's throat. I would want to see how these
from Ideal fare. I hope they all stay healthy, as I might order
from them next year, or later in a few months. I noticed
you have them on newspaper, I would be careful with that, as
they can develop splayed legs from the slippery surface.
I put mine on paper towels at first, it gives them grip. Splayed
legs can permanently damage their legs. Just a thought?
I love bleek, I love Miss Robbi and I wish sunshine to
princess kathy.;o)
Thanks for the paper caution. I never thought about that causing the splayed legs.
So far they are all doing well and starting to feather out. Some are trying to fly and are getting on top of their water bottle. They are already spoiled rotten.
Yes, most of the chick info sites warn about newspaper
for the first week. After that, they are strong enough to
keep their legs under them. I think there are more than
just a few spoiled chicks around here! ;oP
I love patchouli78
I love Miss Robbi
May princess kathy have straight legs! LOL
: 0 ) Awwwww, thank you! Peace and love your way also!
Yep, we have more than a few spoiled ones too. All our chickens are spoiled rotten. We even have spoiled roosters.
hi, just checking to see ho your ideal chicks are doing! they sure look healthy!
Congrats! I have blue and white silkies coming from Ideal April 17-19, I cant wait!
Makes me think of kindergarten!

Granny that's a beautiful yard. As you can tell from my pictures we have green. And it is starting to grow so it will soon be time to mow. Today we have low 70's but watching the forecast this morning they are predicting upper 70's and low 80's the next few days. I dread summer. Blow some of that cold down this way, ha
Sigh, all the snow we got today melted. It went up into the high 40s today. But, we are supposed to get another storm Thursday. I wish I could send some of it your way, but it ain't gonna happen. So sorry.
Yep I know. We just have to wait till next fall or winter or whenever the cold decides to come our way again. I like it though when it is warm enough to open the windows and let the breeze blow through but not so warm that you end up sweating. We get only a short amount of time that can happen and then the humidity sets in and it's miserable.
Our little chicks really enjoyed the nice warm sunshine today.
Very good. I'm glad they did. I do open the window in my bedroom almost every night. I like the cold air coming in. Unfortunately, my DH is bald and I freeze him out. We have to sleep in separate rooms because of this problem.
Knit him up a nice sock cap to keep his head warm :)
I tried...he wouldn't wear it. ☺
well then I guess he will just have to sleep in the other room then.
Yep, that's what he does. ☺
Beautiful chicks, Smedge. So glad they are healthy!
Did you find Ideal 'ideal'? Hope they have good customer
service.
Hope you see some spring soon, Granny! It was plum hot
today! Some of the chicks were actually panting. I put a
second gallon waterer in today, they needed it.
Good morning, Joni. I think I saw signs of spring yesterday even with the snow. Saw some deer nibbling on what must have been new shoots of grass alongside the road, and was talking with DH and a neighbor and SAW a bluebird checking out one of the bluebird houses. So spring is on the way. ☼
truest, so far I am satisfied with Ideal. The chicks all seem healthly and happy. Course how can they not be happy they are spoiled rotten :)
We have another group of chicks coming on the 3rd of April. There were some they didn't have available when we ordered the first time around. Hopefully they will all be healthy as well.
Heat is coming and I dread it. They are predicting upper 70's and 80's here for the rest of the week. Then its just a hop to upper 90's with 100% humidity. That's when I stay inside during the day and don't go out in the evening because the mosquitoes will eat me alive.
Smedgekles, have you every tried garlic spray to ward off mosquitos? I have been using it for about 20 years and it really works. You could probably google to find the company that sells it. It's called "mosquito barrier" or "garlic barrier".
All you do is mix it with water and spray it around the yard. It doesn't harm animals or poultry. The little smell of garlic you get goes away within a few minutes but mosquitos hate it and won't come around.
I have. It seemed to work at first and then not so good. My sprayer wasn't the best though. I'm going to get a new sprayer and try it again this year. We have a lot of trees and brush around us though so there is a lot to spray.
Yes, it sounds that way. We don't have very many trees near the house although we are surrounded by woods, except towards the road. But usually we only spray the open areas as that is where we mostly stay. We would have more shrubs and trees here but they are notoriously hard to grow here. The soil is pure play sand, and there was nothing here when we set our house and moved here. But I am slowly getting more trees and bushes going around the area.
The only thing I have against garlic spray is it inhibits bees also and I have to be careful if I want to have flowers and veggies growing in the garden not to spray around them.
Yep, one thing we have plenty of here is trees and brush. Blackberries or dewberries, whichever one comes first, is blooming like crazy everywhere. It will be picking time and pie baking time when they pop out.
DH has a garden so I'll have to be sure we keep the spray away from there as well. Thanks for that reminder.
