Lily "Silk Road"

Marietta, NY(Zone 5a)

Does anyone know of an inexpesive mail order source for Lily "Silk Road"?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Or you can get it right from the source for 10 bucks http://www.thelilygarden.com/pages_lilies/orienpet_1.html
You can check them out in the Garden Watchdog http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/1248/

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

If you get it from the direct source you know it is who it supposed to be.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

Be very careful...you go in to look at Silk Road then you end up with a list...trust me--I know! =)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

If you buy from the Lily Garden, it's guaranteed to be the correct bulb or she will replace it. That's where I'd get it ;) It's a beauty!

Millington, MI(Zone 5b)

I just went there.....just to look around, mind you. Now I have a mental list. Must not go back, must not go back....; )

Marietta, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks, everyone. I went in and looked at the Lily Garden site and now I have a list. A long, long, long list. ;-) I really should know better, there goes the budget again. ( sigh--- so many fragrant flowers, so little time......)

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I tried to warn you! LOL I remember the first print catalog I got...I had a list a mile long--pretty much the whole catalog! I broke down and bought some this year--more than I should have but I was lucky enough to stumble across a co-op so I could afford a bit more than I normally would have purchased.

I'm not sure how they increase but hopefully I'll have some in a couple seasons to trade.

I agree with Magnolia, Ticker, and Moby that the source/grower is usually the best. However most of my Silk Roads came from Park and they have actually done very well and were true to name. I am certain they got them from Judith/Catherine at Lily Garden. I think I took the lazy route since you can order online at Park and at LG you need to fill out the form and send it in fax or snail mail.

Marietta, NY(Zone 5a)

I thought about ordering them from Park's but I have no luck with most of the plants I get from them. I don't know what it is, but I have the same problem with Wayside. I just ordered seeds and some annuals from Parks and they overcharged me on shipping. Spent a lot of time on the phone with them and I'm still not sure it's fixed. I will not order any more perennials from them since of the dozens of plants I ordered thru the years, only 3 plants have survived more than 1 season. Just not worth it. I will order from the lily garden and see what happens.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Good luck, fragrance. I order less and less from Park/Wayside as well, and really only use them if they have something I want that I cannot get from someone else. I have had mixed overall results from them. Most of their perennials have arrived looking good but they tend to have a high mortality rate for some reason and I usually have a pretty green thumb and don't kill many things.

I ordered like two dozen Silk Roads from them a few years ago and suprisingly all arrived healthy and did well. They were all individually packed and did flowers though sparsely first year, but by third year I had the likes of what you see below. I have ordered from Lily Garden before and some of the bulbs they sent were tiny (Blackjack Asiatics to name one) and didn't bloom first year. I was disappointed and expected a lot better, given the good press they get here, but maybe my experience was a fluke. However, you're right, most people love them and they do have a terrific selection. I love B&D lilies, however - but LG does have a better selection and they develop so many of their own hybrids especially among the OT's. Good luck and show us pictures!!!

I really want this one too, need to check it out!!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

3 years ago I bought 1 bulb of Silk Road and this summer will have 4 full size stems blooming.

Moby mine reproduce like made this past year. Just collected 12 bulblets from two old stalks! Cheaper that way, if you can wait :*)

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

Ooooh, Silk Road is now on the top of my "want" list. That would be stunning with so many different plants I have! How tall does it get?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Mine is a tad over 5 ft. at maturity.

Wow, so am I!! :) LOL

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Huge, ain't it?! ;)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Very nice!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Someone had one that was around 7ft. I think! I bought my one little bulb this year and it is up with 1 little bud!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I bought 3 in a co-op earlier this spring (supplier was The Lily Garden). I thought that they were a bit on the small side for a lily that is supposed to produce such a huge stalk...maybe for the co-op at the prices we were getting we got smaller bulbs. I 've got 6" shoots up from all three right now and plan to move them this fall or in super early spring next year.

Moby, yours are beautiful! I see they don't look like you have them staked either...that's impressive:)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

'Silk Road' is awesome! Split one by accident and it scaled nicely, forming all sorts of little babies over the winter. I was so upset when I heard that crrrrunch sound, but it seemed to be fine the way it turned out. The bulb was still good and has a nice thick stalk this year and I have more planted beside it now.

'Silk Road' : A Must Have!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Thanks dmac. Silk Road has really strong stems.

The only time I've had to stake lilies is if I had them growing too close to the house or a fence. Most growers will mention if a lily is likely to need staking, and Buggy Crazy is really good about it.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I think I'll be doing a bit of shopping with Buggy Crazy this year:) I just bought some a couple of weeks ago from Brent & Becky's end of season 1/2 price clearance and was pleasantly surprised by how large the lily bulbs were. Really wasn't expecting them to be so chunky:lol: Hope that means sturdy lilies!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

My Silk Road was over 7 feet two years ago and just at 7 feet in the pic above. Only about 6 feet this year - I think the bulbn is dividing.

dmac, they get really large after about three years - here are the bulbs we dug up from our old house in fall 2006 to transplant at the new place.....here are two from the other house right after I dug them up with my partner holding a cell phone for comparison.

I DID have to stake mine when the flowers started to open.....

Holy cats Steve! Those things are gianormous:lol: I have hopes for my little dinks then:)
Really glad I got them. I'm a bit impatient although I do love watching the growth and changes in my bulbs and plants over the years.

Whitehall, WI(Zone 4a)

I bought a couple Silk Road from TLG 3 years ago, and last year (their second season in my garden) they were over 6 feet tall. They are beautiful and smell wonderful...everyone should have at least one!

Absolutely. Welcome to DG ecmama!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You are so right, everyone should have at least one. It's one robust plant and it really does get better and better each year.

Beautiful picture. Is yours blooming already? Wow.

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

For seeds go to Select Seeds (OMG)
For perenials no one beats Bluestone they jump out of the pots and plant themselves, oh and they put on an inch of growth in mid-air. I have never ever been disappointed by them.

Oh and Rare and Heirloom lillies coop starting up.

Whitehall, WI(Zone 4a)

Thanks Moby...this is a GREAT place!!!
