Took a pic of this the other day, whats wrong ? The other one is fine its just this one.
Need help whats Wong with my Rhody.
Tills, I am so sorry to laugh, but it looks so weird - as if someone yiny was trying to do Origami with a new leaf!
Are there more like this? I would pinch this off & have a look inside.
My guess is some type of bug, or your Rhody is trying to communicate some serious displeasure to you!
=:0)
Katye, thats funny, this Rhody was given to me from a friend down the road, Its never been quite right, I have never found a bug on it or in it have looked, I even prune it down, my other Rhody is not 5' or less from it, and it has no problems.
Maybe your right it has its own thing going on, I have 4 Rhodies only this one has a new style. And a lot of the new growth looks like that.
Could it have a weevil?
Maybe. I am so doggone curious about what's going on that I would pluck that leaf & look close.
If you're not squeamish about doing it & there is something in there, take a picture & share it. Then we can figure it out.
perhaps a faeirie in a kilt crash-landed there......................
Could be 'witches broom' virus. I'd break it off and put it in the garbage.
I'm not squeamish about anything, and not afraid of anything as long as its not bigger than me, or maybe dog fangs that will stop me big time. love finding spittle bugs under their little snot rag. Swishing bugs the bad ones anyway. I have no problem there. Will take a leaf and se what I can come up with. But also it there a root weevel that could harm it?
Willow, say what, I have never hear of that
Try posting it on maybe the bug forum
Mary - there is a root weevil that you can treat with bacteria applied in the soil. My experience is that you can see them from from leaf damage. Is this bud deformity the only thing you're seeing? Do you ever get blossoms on your rhody?
Witch's Broom is the virus that causes that corky growth on native huckleberry. It can get on Rhodys and disfigure the growth. A guy once brought a picture of a growth on his Rhody into the Extention Office because he didn't want to cut it off. He thought it might be a mutation and be worth a lot of money. I really had a hard job convincing him to cut it off. :-)

Great information about weevils on rhodies. I've been meaning to do some research on this for a long time. I think I've seen adults and thought they were harmless!

Great links, Katie-thanks for finding those!
I dont have time tonite, but will get back to the links as soon as I can taking those 3 days of I guess I'm paying the price, Thanks katie.
Oooh. Too many in one place for my thinking.
Maybe you can post to the bug identification forum - tell them it's on your Rhody. I'll be they'll have an answer.
Did it waiting for reply. Thanks
I'll get over there and watch too. I'm interested in hearing the answer.
Have them In a water bottle, waiting, need to go to bed soon, have a early shift in AM got to be up at 3am.
eeek!! Go to bed now.
Waiting for dinner DH is making for me, haven't ate yet.
maybe a root weevil of some sort. i have a varigated rhodie that has bites out all over it. the nursery guy i used to work for said to treat it with a ground pesticide and water it. those little buggers live in the ground and come out at night and much on things. they havent gotten to my other rhodies yet and hope they dont!! got over 45 varities and would hate to treat them all.............. ;P
Welcome to PNW or have you been here before, and I have missed you?
hi...
ive been a member for just a short time now. but love plants!! i live on the s. coast of oregon. i am a bonified plant-a-holic. dont know all the latin names but mostly the common ones. i add my 2 cents when i can (or think i might know what im talking about ) lol its a fun site and love to chat plants. already been chatting with some one in my area!! thanks for the hello :) happy planting!
Well Hey welcome aboard, my DH has family in Coos Bay, been down there many times, but really like it here. Know what you mean about names, have a hard time with that. Know what I like and what I want.
Put the little buggers on Bug ID, yes there are a beetle but which one?
I will try the Ground Pest. but whats funny I have another Rhody not 4' from this one the is not affected. and they have been in this spot for over 10 years. But the one that is affected has a thinner leaf structure that the other which has a thick leaf. maybe that has something to do with it?
I love to share pics
this is my new project, 'Woodland Garden'
hi tilly...
what a great place to be able to garden!!! i have that sorta surrounding my housing area but not on site. we live on the outskirts of u.s. forestry land about 1/4 mile.
i kinda have some of my garden areas by color theme. east side is what i call my birch side, 5 river birch, and everything is yellow, red, salmon and oranges. right infront of the house is all purples and blues, by the front door bed alot of pinks and the side yard is everything where i have the brunt of my bigger rhodies. have run out of room in the front for big stuff so the other rhodies i got are going into the back yard. :) i am going to start a page in my garden blog/diary of the rhodies when they start blooming. need to add a few right now, my dwarf ones or taking off! will put on the yard pics in a bit... way to cold to go out right now, but its sunny
happy planting!
...areas yet to conquer. one step at a time, then start over...

whats the saying... you might be a redneck if you mow your lawn and you find your car!! fill it with dirt plant a few morning glories or honey suckle in it and super planter!!!
happy planting :)
To funny
Tilly I think you should take some starts of that Buddleia and have them available to anyone who stops by. Then I will need your address. I will be coming to Suquamish sometime this month. (wide grin)
Very nice side yard shokima. Would like to see another picture later in the year.
thank you willow :)
i will be taking more pics at various times of the year. you can check my diary too for more "yard" pics lol. hmmmmmmm... buddleia starts.. hmmmm... you know you can mail those too! :-)
I have one Buddleia in my yard. It is the regular purple color but it is a dwarf variety and only get about ten feet tall instead of twenty. No trouble with it reseeding. Did you hear they are thinking of putting Buddleia and foxglove on the noxious weed list? I hope not. Deadheading works fine on both of them.
working at a wholesale nursery i hear alot of stuff. yes i did hear about them poss. doing that. but it should only be for a certain species that is obnoxious, not the whole variety. we have a varigated variety that has bluish flowers. very cool.
