Potting trees...

Indianapolis, IN

I am buying some trees that are about two feet tall right now and I want to plant them in pots to set out side but I do not know what size of pots to use. I will be moving to a new house in 9 months and I plan on planting the trees then. I am trying to fatten up the trunk of the tree so what size of pot would be good for me? I can get four inch pots for next to nothing but I do not know it those would work or if they would stunt the growth of the trunk.

A 4 in pot sounds too small for a 2 ft tree. What size pots are they in now? If they're currently in pots that are appropriately sized for them you can just leave them in there, or if they're outgrowing those pots then get the next size up. Or if they're bare root, take a look at them when they arrive and get a pot that's just a bit bigger than the rootball (I bet you'll find that the roots wouldn't even fit in your 4" pots). I can't speak for what's best for fattening up trunks, but it's never good for any plant to be in a pot that's way too big for it, when you do that then the roots end up spending more time wet than they ought to and that's not healthy for them.

I've got scads of nursery (heavy black plastic) pots, in many sizes, you are welcome to have. D-Mail and we can "connect". I can't live too far from you.
