Need Advice

NE, SD(Zone 4b)

Last year was my first year of gardening and planted callas.

Because we get too cold to place bulbs in an unheated garage I was told to place the bulbs in a bag of peat moss and keep in a cool place. I was told not to put them in the fridge. I placed them in a cool area in the basement, however, unbeknowst to me my helper put a lid on the container.

The callas have sprouted. What should I do with the callas? Thanks for your help.

You have a lot of tender growth there. I would place the whole thing where it gets a lot of light so they can green up a little, but not too warm as you don't want them to go full steam into more growth.

Giving them more light might strengthen the foliage a little, your problem might be then how much water to give or not to give them. If they are moist in their compost, and as they are in growth, I would just give an occasional very light spray on top of the peat they are in so the foliage and tubers don't get too distressed.

There's most likely roots under the surface too, these come from around the top edge of the tuber. I think if you just slow them down a little and strenghten them up, after a few days put them in their final pots with most of the foliage above the compost but it won't hurt to bury the stem parts, the tubers usually bury themselves deeper as they grow.

Once potted keep the compost moist but don't overwater until they have established their roots into the compost and are in obvious growth, also they will take more water when it's warmer. With care you might get flowers.
