I bought it as a very small baby-conifer, without a tag, on the flower market and I have it planted in a container for about 3 years, it has grown a lot, so I wonder what it could be and if it eventually can grow very tall in which case I'll have to consider to give it away to someone who has the space to plant it in the full soil.
can anyone help me with the ID of this conifer ?
Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Boulevard' (a juvenile foliage cultivar of Sawara Cypress).

On size, the UK champ is 9m tall, but the cultivar hasn't been around overly long, so it can probably get quite a bit larger than that. The older cultivar 'Squarrosa' (very similar except a bit less glaucous) has reached 26m.

Thank you so much Resin! That is the one!
But then how many years has the UK champ done over it to get 9 m tall ? I might still be able to keep it some more years if I keep it giving bigger containers ...
Hi Bonitin,
The cultivar was named in 1965, so it cannot be more than about 40 years old. That individual specimen could of course be less, but probably not a lot less.

I see, thanks! I'm sure now I can still keep it happy for some years to come and who knows what life might bring and I will be able to give it a proper place in the full soil...
In the US, there is a 20' specimen on a Georgia campus that is 15' wide (roughly 6 meters by almost 5 meters, I think). Be aware that it retains lots of dead needles in the interior and need to be cleaned out yearly for best appearance. Also, there is a smaller cultivar, 'Squarrosa Pygmaea'. The straight (parent) variety of both 'Boulevard' and the small one obtains heights of 30' - 40'. There is a 60' specimen in Boston.
Thanks Hoosier!
the 'Squarrosa Pygmaea' is also pretty, but I like mine better.
If you like it so much, just keep it potted.
Trim the root ball back by 1/3 every two-three years.
Kind of like a Bonsai tree, just not trimmed. ;-)
I will definately be looking for some of these for our yard.
Thanks crimsontsavo!
I'll still let it grow for some years, I have very large containers, and then I might (not sure)use the method you suggest, although I have a strong resistance in trimming rootballs, it's like deliberately hurting a plant, but perhaps I'm too sensitive..
Hehe, it wont feel it i promise. Just consider it a hair cut LOL.
And imagine, you love it so much you'd take the best care of it Im sure lol. :D
:-)
