Can I WS JMG?

Laurel, MD(Zone 7a)

Is it too late or too early to WS morning glories? I have some seeds and considered starting them inside. However, I have had problems previously with inside seedlings not receiving enough light and getting leggy before I could put them outside. I wondered if I could WS them now. Has anyone tried this? Since these are such special seeds, I don't want to take a chance on not doing it right. I have six seeds labeled Oreheme Kaori Yuki and five of one called Suigetsu. Can anyone offer specific instructions? I did go and read all the different posts but it just confused me more. Thanks for any help.

Shirley -
I wintersowed two different I. purpurea last month - Star of Yelta, and Aomurasakizyouhatensibori. I did not soak or nick the seeds, either. I didn't have any problems with either, and have both planted in the ground already.

Ron said this in another thread:

Quoting:
The Ipomoea purpurea and less often the Ipomoea nil will successfully resow in freezing climates, but the Ipomoea tricolor will rarely,if ever, successfully reseed itself in climates where the temperatures freeze...

Based on that information, I'd say anything that can resow in freezing climates would work for wintersowing.

If you're worried about losing seed, try wintersowing just half of your seeds.

Hi Shirley,

The statement that Nichole quoted would certainly apply to plants that would naturally re-seed by themselves outdoors in the Autumn and subsequent natural outdoor weather conditions...

Your success starting them indoors is directly related to the amount of light that you have available for the plants...if you have a place where the plants will receive very bright light then the plants can grow strong without getting too leggy or weak...using and/or supplementing with strong indoor lighting is also very useful...

Hope that helps...
