My hummingbird usually doesn't let any other hummers in the yard. Just last week, I saw her viciously chase off another hummer on several different days. Today, she's hanging out with another hummer. I took a bad photo of them. It's some form of Murphey's law that whenever you go outside without your camera, the sun comes out and a hummer will land in a picture perfect spot 6 feet away from you. This pic was taken after I went in for the camera and the sun went behind a cloud, and they were in a mess of twigs way at the top of the crepe myrtle. Do you think they're mating? Even though it's a bad picture, they both look like females to me.
question about weird hummer behavior
Hard to tell but they do look both like females.
Could one be an immature male?
I guess your talking about the one in the back?
I can't see it well enough at the throat or tail to be positive of anything/
The one in the back doesn't have any markings on the throat either. They followed each other around. It was too cold yesterday to enjoy being outside (at least for me), so I don't know yet if this weird behavior has stopped. Thanks for your thoughts. I'll keep watching!
