Flower/Plant wish list for spring 2008

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Robert, I forgot to say I cannot drink a malt and be sane...lol the hops make me crazy! I love hot tea, and I also like Bacardi, I could bring a half a shot with me...lol
I would love to visit again and I would love for you to come up for a visit too!
Thanks for the complement on the yard, the gardens and hobbies are my salvation also! Well entertaining the dogs is right up there too!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Robert and Carla -

You've probably already investigated this, but even insurance companies are recognizing and covering acupuncture for pain management these days. I had it done on Nick after his neck injury. He would be so happy to see the acupuncturist and then he'd go lay down on his bed and relax and sleep through the procedure. After the first treatment, which isn't necessarily supposed to be indicative of how much it can help, he was sold!!

So sorry that you have to go through this, but very glad you have both found some ways to manage your pain. And I know what you mean about not feeling like you can commit to activities. My SIL has had fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis for years and it is difficult for her in that way, too.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Carla, I wish you weren't so far away, my DH is a massage therapist retired now, but still knows his stuff, Loves working on anyone but me unless I cry good and loud, They said at school, never work on your Spouse could create problems, He stills has 3 clients he sees every week. has had them for 5 years now.

And yes Laurie I know what you are thinking, Another tidbit out of Tills,
So quite she is, LOL

I second the vote for both acupuncture and for rethinking the narcotic pain killers for chronic pain. It is my understanding that when there is actual pain involved, the receptors take up the medication and use it for that. Addiction is not nearly as big an issue, although I can certainly understand the need for caution. Acupuncture, though, is excellent.

You can stop by anytime i am home to get some of the blue panda. or I can bring it to a gathering you may attend. Don't worry about saying you will come and then not being able to. Everyone will understand.

Tills, the blue panda was not a seedling. It was a division dug from my garden. i may have given it to you. I cannot remember. It has short light green foliage that looks a little bit like a bleeding heart. It grows from tiny bulblets. I hope I put a label in the pot.

Tills, if my dh was a massage therapist and would not work on me, it would definitely cause problems! I'm thinking he has a great excuse for getting out of work! That man needs to give you a good massage and no excuses!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I Did not get the 'Blue Panda'
There is a little so called, how do I say it ' protocol' when it comes to family ' you do not work on someone who is closest to you. Can you in your trade antilizes (spelling) your DH. And I prefer him not to, He makes me hurt more than I did in the beinging, thats why you don't work on your spouse.

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

I agree with Tills, lol you hurt worse after a good massage especially if someone does/knows how to do deep tissue...lol

Okay lets drop this subject, I AM GOOD! Just all know if I am not with you physically, I am spiritually!

Okay lets get going with the wish lists, it would be nice to have lists for all! Everyone has a birthday and it would be nice to give someone an extra special gift if we wanted!

Tills, I can get you some blue panda next time we get together. Just remind me.
Cocoa, we do know it!

Everett, WA(Zone 7b)

Tills, thanks! Not sure how old the yucca is, I believe the former homeowner planted it but not sure when, and it is in full sun in the rocky area on the side of the house... I have been getting great info on gardening and the different plants in my yard from my friend in Colorado, and I think she was a bit surprised at the yucca, just based on our climate up here. It looks healthy to me, but doesn't really fit into my garden design. I will leave it be for now though, see if I can figure out a good design that includes them. :) Your yucca is very pretty, it looks like it fits in well.

Carla, thanks! I would love to bring the kids up some nice day when things are blooming, that would be fun! And I would love just a bit of your catmint if you have some to spare, I want to plant some under my bed of roses, it needs something so I thought I would try some of that, along with the woolly thyme I am trying to get going in part of that bed. We are in the north end of Everett, very close to Marysville... I am actually there (or through there) alot, up to Smokey Point to hit Costco. And every time I pass by that nursery on the left side of the highway, I mean to stop by, but not sure how to actually get to the entrance! Also, sorry to hear about your injury, I hope you feel better with whatever you decide on your treatment. Did you say you worked for the Edmonds School District? I grew up in Edmonds, went to school at Westgate Elementary School, College Place Middle, and graduated from Edmonds-Woodway HS in 1995... so I am an Edmonds native... we have probably seen each other before! :)

Pixy, thanks! We actually used to live much closer to you, in Seatac, when we first moved back to Seattle from Denver, but the way our house and yard already wasy, I just wasn't into gardening at that time... its weird, that just by moving into this new house where the former owner was a gardener, that has gotten me into it! :) But I do like to get down south occasionally, especially with my friend in Centralia having a baby... if I do I will see if I can drop by and get some ideas and tips!

Well, my topsoil got dumped for my raised veggie beds that I have planned (first time doing veggies, by the way... I have a bunch started, and have done a bunch of research on the whole thing, but I still feel this is going to be a wild growing season!)... and I didn't get anything done with it at all yet. I had to make room in the bed in the front yard to transplant the roses in the back in order to put the veggies in the area with most sunlight... man, this is such a slow process!

This is such a friendly group, what a great bunch of people you all are! I guess gardeners are happy, as when you are happy you do what you can to make those around you happy as well!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Cat, to get to that cool Nursery you go past Costco, heading South, for a quarter mile or less on the frontage road and the entrance is on the right through a beautiful timbered entrance. Its well worth a short detour as long as you are that close.

Everett, WA(Zone 7b)

Teriffic, thanks Bal! I will definitely stop by on my next trip up there! I have only been to Emory's in Lynnwood in terms of nurseries, and I really liked it, but it would be nice to find one a bit closer... not that Lynnwood is all that far, but with how long I take there it really stretches my lunch hour! :)

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Try Sunnyside Nursery in Marysville. They are off of Sunnyside Blvd. Old Hwy (99) from Everett, right on second street in Msvl and follow it out Easterly, curving Southerly around the flats and up the hill to the crest and it is on the left. Neat place and very knowledgeable staff.

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Catgal,
I lived in Lynnwood from 1987 until 1999. I worked at Maplewood Center as the Office Manager from 1989 until 1998. I chose this school because it was the "special needs" kids. It was the most wonderful and rewarding time I have ever spent at a job. My 2 oldest graduated from Lynnwood High and the youngest from Mountlake Terrace High in 1995...lol
I am sure we have probably ran into each other in the area, probably at the Mall, it was the place to go.
I will let you know when the catmint pops up and you can come and get a couple, there may be other things too!

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Catgal,
Take Balvenie's advice Sunnyside Nursery is a much better place to go, at least they know which plants they have and where they are! They are very helpful and knowledgeable people.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm about a moron, I got off talking and forgot to say why I show that plant above, I forgot Its name and I bought when we were at Heidis does anyone remember. I think it was Rosemary!!!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi Mary, Looks like Rosemary to me, too.

Carla, I lived in N. Lynnwood from 1991-94. We moved up there because DH was at Boeing Everett. We must have crossed paths at least once....

Cat, Welcome! One thing about Denver-their soil is alkaline, and ours is acidic, so some plants that your Denver friends can grow probably won't do as well here, and vice-versa...

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Sue,
Maybe that is why I felt like I had already seen you before, you looked like someone I knew...I just couldn't place where or when?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Thanks Sue, I'm sure it is now I remember Rach saying something about upright. Planted now, soon we will see.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi Carla, I don't even remember what all I was up to when we lived there. I've even been trying to remember where I shopped when I lived there, but, man, it's been a while! Costco, I'm sure, and I know I was in Lynnwood itself frequently, Fred Meyer, nurseries, a little-we were in an apartment at that point, though. Probably craft and fabric stores, too.

Snohomish, WA

I have been to the Plant farn in Smokey Point. I got lucky and talked to the owner. It is displayed alot like Wells Medina. Walk around and find some very cool things there! I got a magnolia macorphylia and daphne odora there and they are both great plants.

Catgal, definitely stop by for tips, and plants! No one leaves the garden empty handed. I'm about 5 minutes from the freeway, so it's an easy potty stop if I'm home.

Tills, full sun, excellent drainage for that rosemary. Plant it where it sits up a little bit higher than the ground around it, sort of on a mound like we did the lavender at Rachel's house. When you cook beef, snip off some rosemary to put in with it. Yum!

No one has Asclepias speciosum? showy milkweed?

Kingston, WA

Hi Pix I think I do. I'll check I think it has a creamy white pink flower? I do have some milkweeds. Heidi

Yep. Grey/green leaves. Creamy pinkish white flowers. Likes dry soil and sun. I'm coming up to your place on thursday.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

AH pix when do I ever get to cook any more, but love beef. LOL

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I started sowed several asclepias this spring - but nothing showing yet.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Kathy - hiya - a dmail on the way.
Asclepias are very late to emerge, even when established.
Are you looking for plants to fill a shady or sunny spot?
K

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I know they need sun. I'm looking to feed the butterflies and moths. Don't know about Melissa.

I'll give them time - I'm usually behind everyone else because it just doesn't get hot out here.

This is the plant I want:
http://www.anniesannuals.com/plants/plant_display.asp?prodid=125&account=none. I love everything about it. Also now looking for Angelica gigas that will bloom this year. I got three of them at the plant swap and, get this, I CANNOT FIND THEM!! I've wanted this plant for two year, get three of them nicely devloped, but, unfortunately not potted, and now they are lost. Pooh.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Try 'butterflyencounters.com'. They claim to have Asclepias speciosis seeds for $3.00

Plants at Big Dipper Farm. Plant file has 4 venders for angelica too

Pix - don't despair - you will find them.
I have found many things this week - everything that can is poking its head up!
If I see any up my way, I will grab some for you.
I want the Asclepias, too, so an active search by means of nursery visits is forthcoming.

Only thing is, they were not planted yet. When I say I lost them, I mean they were still unpotted in the bottom of a black pot.
I got the asclepias at dragonfly today, and one angelica. I still want two more. I think i can order them from companionplants.com, but I have to check out their rating first.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

ooooops!

Yes, big oops.

Take a look at my new lthread:

Kingston, WA

Hi Pixy I ordered from them bareroot earlier this year I got some hepatica and bloodroot and a few other things and was happy. Good luck. Heidi

Oh thanks, Heidi! That helps loads. I picked up their catalog when I was visiting my mother in law in Tennessee. She's a master gardener and gets a lot of cool catalogs. They have reasonable prices and a long list of cool things.

Kingston, WA

No Problem You know me a shopaholic when it comes to plants. Glad to help. Heidi
