My Hyacinth flowers

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

First time I saw it with my friend, I was amazed at its beauty. He gave me a couple of plants last year and in no time it spread nicely and blooming beautifully now and then.

Dinu,

I have been enjoying all of your pictures - especially the water hyacinths. It's going to be awhile before we see them again here in zone 5, however I am really looking forward to it.

Here are some of mine from last summer.

Thanks Carolyn. Today two sets of blooms are up. Your plant seems to be the same variety as mine? The two pictures above are the same colour - the first one is getting full sun and the second shot was taken when shade was on.

Ultra violet light bounces different tones on blue violet blooms, the colour will be different between full shade, and full sun

Last year my hyacinths weren't blooming and the guy at the plant store told me to mix up some MG fertalizer in a tub and soak them in it over night. Rinse off the roots so I didn't put the MG in the water garden (feeds algea and isn't good for the fish ) and then put the hyacinths back in the water garden. Every one of them bloomed the next day! tadaaa

Wow Kathy!! Next day! That makes me wonder!

Kathy,

Sorry, but it makes me wonder too - if it was the next day, the buds were already there on your plants.

I know that when we have planted our water hyacinths in the pea gravel, we have gotten blooms on them every time. Prior to that, we were not planting them and did not get any flowers.

Try the pea gravel. The wastes the fish give off, should be enough to fertilize the water hyacinths.

Let us know how you make out.

Carolyn,
I just let them float on top of the water, I didn't think you were supposed to plant them, lol! oye vaye

Kathy,

You don't have to plant them - most people don't. They do usually float on top of the water. I never got any flowers when mine just floated - don't know if anybody else could get water hyacinths to flower by just floating them.

Typically, DH and I plant the water hyacinths in the pea gravel in the bog so they will flower and then throw the water lettuce into the main part of the pond so the fish have the water lettuce to play with and nibble at the roots.

My hyacinths are in an area where the level of the 'bottom' touch the roots - raised up bottom. Hope you got the idea. There, the roots get enough nourishment from the leaves that fall and disintegrate and they will be touching the roots.

Nice pond and flowers there Carolyn. Bend low and take another shot from there and we will see your house too in the background!

Wow, gorgeous, and interesting info on planting vs. floating. Thanks, all!
