Spring Blooms!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

o my goodness!
i have things coming back from LAST year!!!
i didn't even expect any tulips to return from what i have heard from other people, but i absolutely have tulip leaves coming up where i didn't plant anything since last year. Mostly it is the white ones, which i think are emperors, sprouting up in a couple places, but i also have about 5 sprouts over by a different building where i had Queen of Night and Renown last year.
Now i have to worry why those are coming up and bulbs i planted in the fall aren't coming up yet...
hmm.....

1st time i've been outside since Thursday - brrrr.

Congrats, Amy! Here's another cluster of yellows.

Amy, that is great news about your tulips. I am hoping for some reruns too. I have returned from Fl and Maine and I have blooms. I am happy to be home. I have some reticulated iris, crocus (not so glorious yet) hellebore, cyclamen, and lots of snow drops. A happy start, though I did notice some munching on a few emerging shoots. Time to start spraying. Patti

welcome home! no blooms here...
are emperors good returners? Because i definitely have sprouts everywhere i had those last year - including the magic new year's tulips... i almost stepped on them!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice, Patti - welcome home!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Thanks, I had a great time in Fl. I even found what I think was a Viburnum in the Cork Screw swamp. Can't escape them! Patti

Emperor tulips return better than the Darwins.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sure that's a viburnum, Patti?? Interesting timing for a discussion of 'emperor' tulips on the day we're hearing of a high-priced escort service by that name.

lol

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Since we're still under the foot of snow we got over the w/e, I bought some daffodils in bloom from the grocery today. Maybe they'll hold me over for a while.

South Hamilton, MA

You hear different stuff than we do. Here the worry is about Josh Beckett's bad back.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, not sure at all!

Fosteriana and Emperor are the same. I have some white ones that I planted last year and an orange one called Juan, which I loved, so I will see if I am as lucky as you.

And I think the escort service was a tad pricey, but I will let the gents chime in on fair pricing. I find it rather odd that she took the train to DC rather than fly. Patti

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

ok - i have no idea about this escort service y'all are referring to...
When i got the white ones, i was shopping with my landlady, and i told her i wanted to get black tulips, and white tulips. She didn't believe me about black tulips, but we found white tulip bulbs she said she'd buy for me. Back then, i didn't even know that they came in all the different kinds, and i ended up disappointed, because the white ones were almost done before my QONs came up, but from looking at pictures i think they are emperors...

Amy - check out any news website or turn on any news on tv and you'll know.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

OK, Victor, I think I posted a picture of an Am. elder rather than VIBURNUM obovatum and I now can't find the picture of it. I must have deleted it. But I was sure I took one. Drat. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - I was guessing an elderberry. I believe FL has four or five native viburnums.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I only saw the one in Cork screw swamp. You are good. Patti

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Welcome back home, Patti. You done good by your friend.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Candyce, Thanks, No friend is a friend unless it is a two way street. She has spent many a time on mine, so it was my turn. I wish she was still on Nantucket, but I love to visit her in Maine and she comes here to visit us too. Just not next door any more. Patti

Winter Aconite, Eranthis hyemalis, came up today. Read it should be the first but crocus sieberi and chrysanthus were a week earlier. Understand it is a little tricky to grow as the area has to be right and the bulbs fresh. Bought 50 bulbs from 2 vendors and spaced them around the yard but, so far, this is the only one to appear.

Still no blooms. Not even buds.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

I saw the beginning of some crocus today, just barely pushing up. Of course they are in the lawn, where the dogs will trample them, but that's ok, I'm still excited..

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Went to the store 2 towns north of me and went past a house tons of crocus and their daffs were almost all opened.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I got nuttin' here too Amy.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

at least i'm in good company...
; )

I got snow, and more snow, and more on the way,

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

No snow on the ground right now but we keep going between solid frozen tundra and two or three inches of muck over frozen tundra. Looks like more rain/wet snow/rain mess the next couple of days. Still no where for all the wet to go, looks like more mud.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Two snowdrops opened their sleepy little eyes today!!!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Gee... anytime I feel blue about not having spring bulbs blooming, Celeste makes me feel better, but worse for you!! Sorry about all the snow Celeste!!!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Harper, I hate to say it but if it doesn't snow every other or every two days then I think it's a miracle! LOL

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

It HAS been that way this year, hasn't it Celeste? We have had a snowstorm of measurable proportions about every three days, as well. And, it's been this way since before Thanksgiving. I say, 'enough already'!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes Candyce it has! Last nights snow was minor!! I mean we are talking a dusting...minimal inches not feet for a change!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

That's the kind of snowfall I can handle!

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

We got a very light dusting of snow down on the coast Wednesday morning.

Large crocus are starting to appear.

That's a beautiful yellow color!

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Candyce...wish I had planted more of them! The sun wasn't out when I took the picture and still the color was intense. Dark violet crocus vernus Flower Record are inches away from the yellow c. flavus but aren't up yet.

Very nice, David! How big do the blooms get?

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

They are HUGE, Victor! They are yellow mammoth crocus! If you look closely, you can see they are slightly, just slightly, a little itty bit larger than species crocus. If you measure the two, as I just did, they are both just over an inch from the base of the bloom to the tip of the flower. I think c. flavus is maybe a little wider however. It does stand out more than yellow c. chrysanthus.

Wow! What a great bouquet! Have to add some this fall. Thanks David. Keep posting!
