'k' no freezing rain..lol
SIL who does some workshops just sent me a prototype (unpainted) we'll have a choice of color and design..will have the workshop in April..by then surely most (if not all) the snow will have left and I can find a home for it...
What's in doing in your part of the country??? Pt.2
Bettypauze - undertaking! LOL. Ginnylynn - her favourite son is herself and I'm not good enough so I did wonder a bit while she shoveled sand.
Bettypauze - what is that a prototype of? Lighthouse?
Yes, will choose the actual design for paint, structure attachments etc. really not the type of thing I would normally put in my garden, only because I like my garden to have the cottage look, we'll see..if I can't find a home in mine I'm sure I'll find someone who will love it..solar light would be nice at night though in some corner of the yard..
Maybe you could adapt the design Bettypauze and make it more like a cairn - that would fit a cottage garden look. You could finish it with a faux stone texture finish, add some "mortar" lines to outline "stones", cut down the light platform to the same diameter as the top of the structure, and attach a flat light to the top - maybe one of those floating solar lights they sell for ponds or something. If you could get one the right diameter you might even be able to sink it right down into the base level with the top so the light would appear to be coming right out of the cairn. Very Celtic and Druidic, don't you think?
On the plus side growin - the sand probably absorbed some of the oil that otherwise would have been picked up by your clothing :-)
hmmm thanks Ginnylynn..a 'cairn' have to look that up..is it English or Irish..sounds as thought hat certainly could work..now I'm excited..lol
Just arrived home as well Andy and we've received a few more inches..lordy, nothing but white in the entire region..
Cairn is from Middle English, from Scottish Gaelic, from Old Irish - how's that for a pedigree :-) Here's a DG link to a definition, written by our own Terry http://davesgarden.com/guides/terms/go/2186/
I think all you Ottawa and area folk are entitled to a good solid grouch right now. Wow have you ever been hit hard this year!
Andrew - that doesn't look like much. They must've trucked some of it away.
Wanna come see my street?
Oh lordy, looks like my backyard..any signs of spring weather coming for the weekend in your area? Yep you've loads of snow as well! Perhaps we'll get some weekend sunshine...was telling a bunch of girls on the Best/Worse and What did I learn? forum that I'm going to get my winter glad rags on, shovel in hand and dig out one of the gardens..the one with birdhouses, fill them up, set a chair in the sunshine and try to pretend it's summer...nice way to perhaps spend a Sat. afternoon..lol..can't wait any longer...
Opps forgot to say I've spent the better part of the morning looking for cairns..to no avail..will have to sketch out your changes Ginnylynn and see what I come up with..haven't purchased the solar light as yet so might get the opportunity of finding similar to what you've described...
Burn...sorry to hear you'll yet get another dusting of snow this weekend...
DS Greg, DIL Melanie and 2 grandsons Kyle and Noah are so excited..they get to leave by snowmachine tomorrow for the entire weekend..heading north..lordy they love the snow..so guess it's not fair that this 'grandma' is complaining of it...oh well, I get to keep Sophie their beloved Labradoodle..let's home Sailor (Border Collie - age 10) will enjoy the visit..kitties put her in her place rather quickly...
So do enjoy today and hope for a sunshine weekend in your neck of the woods..

o Here's one showing a flat-topped cairn, although this one is quite short, that has a plaque set in its top as I have suggested setting a light in http://www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/content/images/2007/03/23/finder_cairn_470x365.jpg
LOL That should give you the general idea. If you want to look at more just do a Google image search on the word cairn - that's where these came from. They come in all shapes and sizes and all different types of stone. You build a cairn how you want to - to convey what you wish it to.
Aren't you the sweetest, now how come I couldn't find anything..just found everything to do with city, travel, etc.etc.
Much appreciated..will show you how your suggestions come to life once the project is completed..might have to put your name on it as a joint effort! lol
I would like to see pics once it's done, and no credit is necessary :-)
Well Ottawa was hovering around the freezing point today. Got a bit sunny this afternoon. But we also got about a cm of snow over night.
They've been threatening snow here since last night; narry a flake to be seen so far. We really could use the moisture though....
Joanne
Wow - how big is that Camellia!? It's gorgeous.
When I did the Google image search on "cairn" I ended up with about a 50/50 split between stone cairns and Cairn Terriers :-)
Today was wonderful in London ON where I work. Partly sunny, partly cloudy, and a high temperature of 9C. Not even a hint of snow, sleet, or freezing rain. I'll take more of this please!
I lived in Vancouver for four years (78-81) and remember those camellias... and the cherries and and and... but my mother always said, grow and love what grows here and make the most of each season. And so I do.
The little house is a 1 storey bungalow so I guess 10-15'. It is pretty to look at from my apartment window. People walk along, walk up to the shrub and yank a branch off wrecking the shape. Sorta like what they do to my hardy fuchsias.
What a beautiful view..been up since 3am couldn't sleep so have been putting around doing various things..daylight rising and I've not listened to the news as yet..let it be a pleasant surprise...
Let's hope the sun decides to shine in all our areas...have a fun day and those of you who can garden, I'm envious..for me, I'll find as much to do about gardening..ie reading, planning and perhaps a project, hope you can find similar...
Enjoy your day!
My mother phones me early this morning to tell me it's going to snow in a panick and I need to bring the recently potted up bananas indoor. Well, they've never been indoors and don't seem to flinch from our occasional frost. I think she just likes waking me up.
Magnolia sargentiana var. robusta @ UBC Botanical Garden yesterday.
Love the magnolia..had thought about going to Canada Blooms over the weekend but decided that the drive to the city after travelling it for 5 days just didn't warrant it..
Blue sky but rather cold out there today..that's ok because it means a slow melting which might save the flooding...
Are any of you getting the freezing rain..just missed us on the drive in but I see a few flakes floating around, calling for rain later in the day...aren't you excited...less than 2 full days and it's SPRING..now we wait until it's SPRUNG!!!
Oooh what a nice primula.
Here in Blyth we were already getting freezing rain at 4:30 a.m. when I got up - I don't know what time it started. That continued until about 11 o'clock and then turned to rain. I think it has stopped raining now too, but it's still very overcast. Temperature is about +2 C and the wind is blowing out of the SE at 31 km/h with gusts up to 44 km/h. The forecast is for rain all day and night, a rain/snow mix on Wednesday, and flurries on Thursday.
Yukky, light snowfall and now it's turned to drizzle..sure hope is doesn't get below freezing until I get home..don't mind when it happens early am so I can have a 'snow/ice day' but not while I'm at work..hate to spend the night here..lol...I'll think 'spring'!
And I'll be thinking spring right along with you ;-) Have a safe and uneventfull trip home.
Those are really nice Primula, and that Magnolia tree is amazing.
Had a super nice day here, snow was melting . I went for a nice drive with my 4yrs old GD, to see wild life. And it turned out really fruitful. We've seen a deer, an eagle, some crows, and either a coyote or fox, really to far to be able to tell for sure. But it was fun.
They're announcing the same for tomorrow, Yippee.
This was on our drive today.
Oh how beautiful..to spend the day with grandchild as well..lucky you..
It raining, heavy fog and dark sky here in the city..much the same when I left home..still better than a 'blizzard' right?
Guess everyone is planning Easter activities with the family..must get mine confirmed and plan from there...
Calling for much the same for tomorrow and part of Friday but sunny for Sat./Sun./Mon. just colder...
Do enjoy your day!
Beautiful tulip, a5footsea. thanks for sharing it, we're a long way, from seeing something like that here.
Blizzard condition for the past 2 days, snow pile is so high right now, it's unbelievable. Whiteout condition, snow drifts, not a good day to be on the road.
What a pretty start to the day!
Thanks for the pic growin! I love Violas and Pansies and Violets. They're just so darn cheerful to look at.
Beautiful, bright, sunny weather here for the last two days and supposed to be more of the same for the next two as well. A little chilly though.
I'm starting to get the itch to be out in the gardens in a big way now though. I was out walking the perimeters of the property yesterday, looking longingly out at the bits and pieces of garden I could see starting to peak through the snow. How sad is that :-)
I mowed the lawn today and DW is cleaning carpets, mostly sunny today, 3 - 10*C tpday.
