Dirt under the fingernails

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

You even wake up being funny!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

If I saved all the chocolate caramel grounds would the plants develop a sweet tooth ?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Backyard is like a really mucky swamp land right now. So much rain and snow melt with only the top couple of inches thawed out. The wet just sits on top with no place to drain down. Big downpour and T storm this am , settled into just rain showers now. No sign of life here 'till the ground defrosts. Warm enough for no heavy coat so that's a step forward if it would only last.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Pirl. Ngam, I have a few places like that this AM. And we're in for another big storm Fri/Sat.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

That thunder storm that passed during the night was an eye opener!!! The winds are really strong right now and I doubt I'll be doing anything outside though it is warm.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Michaela, on 3.3 you were hoping the snow would be gone in a few weeks. Did the rain wash it all away? Mine's gone!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

No, it's not all gone yet - but it is largely gone. There is a wide strip that is on the north side of a tall fence that is all the last to melt - well, that and the HUGE piles of snow from the snow plows ;-)

I did find crocuses poking through the mud where snow had been just yesterday.

I have violas already blooming under lights in the basement! In a week, or so, I guess I will plant the violas in the front garden :-)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I was looking for my crocus (should have been poking up) then I realized that the crocus I ordered was canceled, I never planted them. Hee hee.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Well Jen, you won't be disappointed now will you? LOL

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Well poo! That would explain them not coming up yet then.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Better not try Forget Me Nots, Jen!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hurray! I have dirt under my fingernails! I raked up a lot of leaves, trimmed my irises, took my potted roses from the garage and let them get some direct light for part of the day, put my flats of violas outside on the driveway (have to remember to bring them in).,

My primrose lilac bush has huge buds on it (surprising, because it is still in shade this time of year and is surrounded by snow)

In just one week, I am going to set up my mini-greenhouses and use them to winter sow lots of things!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Didn't get another chance to get out there, I've been stuck inside doing some accounting. Supposed to rain all day tomorrow guess I won't get out there again till next week, I also have some Easter decor to hang outside.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I still have not gotten any dirt under my nails, but I did go out with the pruners and snipped, snipped, snipped. I was amazed at the size of the clem leaf buds that are bursting forth. Yea for those babies. But the last two days were kind of the worst I have had for long time, and a few roses are just stumps now. It's somewhat similar to the old adage of not going food shopping when you're hungry. Don't go pruning when you're upset with your world.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You should get a punching bag, Weeze! Hope you're feeling better.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

You're on to something there Victor and a few roses and others might have been spared my wrath and frustation :~)

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I went outside today, Friday, and Thursday and raked. I need to start getting in shape and work off the winter poundage!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, maybe we can all try to get in shape for Kassia's RU? Oh wait, no point in that . . . the food is too good!

Does seed starter soil count as dirt under the fingernails?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Of course!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

I started some seeds last weekend and I got dirt under my fingernails!! Yea!! Eleanor
p.s. I want outside dirt under them though!!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I started some seeds yesterday too!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'd like to start some seeds indoors but with a 18 month old they wouldn't be safe. I really have no place to put them, I can't use the garage that's the only "room" in the house that's my hubby's and he's not even happy I keep my car in there. we don't have a basement. I think I need a bigger house.

I wish I had another room to grow other than the kitchen. There is 2 extra bedrooms but they are in use. Computer and ebay and the other shipping and ebay.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Jen, you could try putting them on shelves under lights out of reach.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

I use lights on a 4 shelf unit. I had the unit in my bedroom but it was really in the way so I took it apart and put it in the cellar. (and put it back together) I can understand having a problem with a toddler and that's why mine is behind closed doors. But, the good news toddlers grow and in another year or two could be trusted to leave the plants alone. Eleanor
(some of my seeds have germinated!)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hurray for seed germination! Here is what I have germinated so far - white figaro dahlias, oodles of petunias, gazillions of lobelia, annual geraniums, brugmansia, snapdragons, vinca, african daisy, viola, wishbone plant.

Oodles more to start! Including impatiens, nemesia, more dahlias, etc. I love this! Why would anyone want any other hobby?

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

So far I've germinated some Stock, Dahlias, Penstemon, and Creeping Gloxinia.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I was out raking up dead stuff today. I filled the entire compost. I guess it's time to build a new bin ...or two.

I'm starting seeds this weekend. My houseplants might be sitting in the dark until it's time to take them outside. They're being sacrificed for the seeds!!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have Yellow Bells, Lobelia, Pink Snapdragon, Petuina's, Dahlia's, Sweet Hibiscus Manihot, and Salvia Rose all on the first set of leaves, some with their second set.

Heres a toothpick. We're just all little seed starters arent we.

It would be fun to see weekly updates on your seedling, Sherrie.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And on that toothpick!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Before I saw the germinated seed I thought it might be a new way to start a tree.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'd find her climbing the shelves to get to them, she's a real stinker!
