Hi everyone,
This is the first time I am posting here .
I usually hang around in the rose forum but have planted12 types of MG seeds the last few days, some have come up overnight :-)
Some I have gotten from a Co-op here on Dave's a few years ago, some are commercial and a couple from trades.
Went thru the MG plant files and saw some wonderful pictures of MG,one that really caught my eye was a double blue.My wishlist got longer !! and LONGER !! :-)
Can anyone recommend a great source that sells quality seeds ?perhaps e-bay ?
Thank you ,
Brig
Looking for seed MG source
Hi Brig,
Welcome to the world of morning glories. For seeds, try ebay xxx type in: morning glory seeds xxxx or contact the MG enthusiasts in this forum...
Hi Brig, If you Dmail me maybe we can set up a trade. I have a few nice ones I can share.
Ronnie
Gofast,
Thank you for the Welcome.Who are the MG enthusiasts here ? I bet ALOT !
Ronnie,
I would love to set up trades with you again .Tempt me :-) you know I can't say no !
However I won't be able to have any until this fall, but here is what I planted so far.
A few days ago up to yesterday I planted:
IPOMOEA nil
Chocolate
Dbl.Pink Picotee
Asuka
Akasuki no Haru
Akathoukinoumi
Heian no Kagayaki
Heian no Kaori - not sprouted yet
Heian no Akatsuki
Akatsuki no mai - not sprouted yet
IPOMOEA PURPUREA
Grandpa Ott's
President Tyler
IPOMEA Tricolor - Heavenly blue
I basically planted all that I had ,the only ones I have still alot of would be President Tyler and Heavenly Blue, both from trades.Have not grown them myself, but I am sure you have those already. They are readily available.
Ronnie I will d-mail you later about the Astrantia's.Have had NO luck at all, something I didn't do right, maybe you can help me ?
Egal-- Good to see a post from you! I haven't been to the rose forum in ages (since all of mine succumbed to mildew) and I have missed seeing pictures of your gardens! I'm new to MGs this year, too, although it sounds like you've been dabbling in them...
I was wondering the same thing--who can recommend a good retail source for JMG--I searched e-bay and came up with zillions of hits and I would rather just someone tell me a good reliable resource if possible who can set me up with some seeds.
I'm not into trading just now--don't have any MG seeds except a few that are fairly available here on the forum. But I hope to before too long.
Perhaps someone would d-mail me with a good source here in the states or in Japan? My SIL travels to Japan often and will shop for seeds for me if I point her in the right direction...
Thanks. t.
I have had really good luck buying here:
http://www.onaleeseeds.com/
Thank You so very much :-)
that's the name I couldn't remember,
Brigitte
Hi tabasco,
Good to see you too :-)no wonder I didn't see you post.
Come on over you will be surprised at how active it is lately.
Don't give up !! No way can you,we have all lost a few, sometimes more than a few.I am starting over.
But I want to tell you about my 2 threads, see below.
This WILL be a rosegarden after alot blood, sweat and tears.http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/732119/

We can trade later on in the fall, right now I am going to look at onalee's seeds.Take care!
Seed finding~?~~howdy all, Park is obvious, but they do have a good variety online especially, www.parkseed.com
sorry but I don't know how to insert the hyperlink in the forums...but you have seedlings alread too, remember a good plant by fall will put out hundreds of seeds, literally, so don't buy more of the ones you like (unless they don't do well where they were planted, mine take a summer vacation during the hot hot heat of the vegas summer and bloom more in the fall; you would not believe how many small jamjars i have full of seeds. Unfortunately i am lazy here, and just replant and mix them up, getting a nice color mix in the 3, well it was 3 last year~ now itll be 4 places as some seeds washed out of my garden to the back side of my yards fence and went wild. literally & figuratively, but honestly, that plant produced the LARGEST leaves and flowers, most of the plant covering the ground too! Either way remember the MG's leave a lot of deadwood type of vinage behind each winter, so try to put them somewhere you can access easily from both side or clean-up no problem, or, you can grow them over the previous years...Does anybody know if this would be bad? LOL I have bee MGing for 15 years and just always clean up the dead vines each midwinter when the seeds are all fallen and /or collected.
fernman
egal-- will research Onalee's seeds a bit more. I did buy the mixed packet of JMGs she listed so we shall see. Your garden thread looks interesting and thanks to your enabling I can just see that I'll be digging a new garden for the lovely roses this spring.
And fernman, sounds like you are really into the MGs. I did not realize that they made so many seeds...for some reason I thought MG seeds were rather difficult to harvest.unless we are talking about the traditional cottage garden MGs, which indeed are quite plentiful.
I will check Park's seeds, also, although they aren't getting very good ratings on garden watchdog these days.
hey guys, Parks has some of the best Mt Fuji prices, you get 20 + seeds in each pack. I ordered 6 packs.. but had to get them over the phone, they were not listed on their web page, but are in the catalog... You get quite a variety. They may mess up with the plants, I haven't read the GWD on them, but I got my 6 packs really quick a couple of months ago. I think I only ordered a couple of the Tie Dyes, but they don't strike my fancy too much.
Also, if you three send me an SASE, I'll send you a couple of different I. nils that I have extras of. Be sure to put your DG name and what I'm to send.. do not send any bubble envelopes, I've got several I can reuse. (send 3 stamps) in a plain envelope with your pre-addressed label.
A.
Thanks, gourd, for the tip and offer.
I did a Watchdog review of Parks and gave them a 'neutral' because they were so confused on their product inventory from their online website. (They gave me wrong info that was consistent with everyone else's review on watchdog and really messed up my planning).
However, consistent with your comments, I also ordered seed from them in November and received them as promised.
I hope they clean up their customer service/sales division and get it organized, because they do have a nice range of seeds. I'm sure they will work it out.
fernman,
I am definately a beginner growing MG and my enthusiasm got the best of me and I planted away.
But I am going to start some for our daughter who is a avid gardener but much too busy with 4 children to start with seeds.
Also did some of one kind starting 6 or even 12 because I didn't think they all would grow :- )wrong. It looks like I am going to have a good crop this fall.
I am not going to put them into the ground but in some containers.Have to figure out how to make a little teepee from 3 sticks so they can climb.Maybe some Bamboo for the larger ones ?
what are you guys using ?
I have the Parks catalog as well but have heard so many horror stories about messing up orders so I didn't buy anything.
***
tabasco,
I did go thru her Jap.seeds and looked ,made some notes.Maybe I will eventually buy the mix and then ID them so I get the variety ?
Right now I have some coming from some trades and that should be enough for awhile ? or NOT ? ..LOL
Glad you're going back to the rose forum.see you there I hope!
***
Gourd,
I know what you mean about the tie tied, somehow I don't like them as well as the others.
Thank you for you kind offer.I will take you up on it :-) just a small amount will do i.e.3-6 ? but only if you can spare them?
OT one of our sons lives in Hobbs NM ,my DIL called last night and told me they had a little bit of snow yesterday.
We have mountains here,19 snowstorms so far,or even 20 and more snow coming tonight ! NO WONDER I have spring fever and plant all these MG's....:-))))
(Note: I`m not excusing anyone.)Big companies are prone to having too many irons in the fire and screwing up lots of orders. Some of the hired workers may be to blame especially if they enjoy hiding and smoking and can`t seem to drink enough coffee. I have seen that on some of the jobs I have worked on. I kind feel for the administration`s job of smoothing things over when they have deadbeat workers.
Another thing these big companies buy their seeds in bulk and they do not have the time or capacity to test grow the seeds. They are too busy sending refunds or firing people if they find them sleeping in the break room. So they put whatever the supplier said the seeds were on pack and let it fly.
With Parks I find if I order petunia seeds they Are petunia seeds but they may or may not be exactly the color they said. So, I go find the color I need at Wal Mart. :)
Most growers and seed sellers pluck and sell their seeds. They put the name of the parent plant on the pack and write "open pollinated" which means cross pollination is a possibility meaning it is possible the colors or traits could or could not be exactly like parent plant in the photo. You need to know if they are open pollinated or hand pollinated and or test grown for quality control before you buy. Just do not spend a lot for "open pollinated" seeds unless you don`t mind taking a risk.

Hi Brig,
I`m voluntarily sending you a small surprise collection. Grow and enjoy what you think you would like.
Karen
OH what surprises !!
beckygardener,
thanks for the total unexspected offer, I just d-mailed you :-)
Karen,
I read this twice OMG that's me I thought. What a wonderful surprise ,I don't know what to say ? Other than THANK YOU and a big HUG :-))
It will be like christmas and I promise I will share my seeds with fellow gardners next season.
Thank you both for the generous offer,
Brigitte
Onalee's packet of mixed JMGs (from e-bay) arrived in the mail yesterday. In my excitement I put all in for a bit of soaking and planted 20 seeds this morning. So now I have a little JMG farm going under lights (in addition to the other MGs I started).
I wish I had space to plant more, and thanks so much for all the kind offers for seeds from DG MG posters that have been sent my way, but I'm all set for now. Hopefully I will have MG beauties to photograph and seeds to share in a few months...
Thanks again for all the tips and source referrals. I will continue to look into them. t.
Don`t you wish we all could give lots of seeds to the whole world? That is why we have DG because if there is something you want and don`t have at the time being eventually they get around to you. :)
When I was a beginner I suspected they gave the morning glory seeds away at first just to get people hooked. LOL!
Karen
And hooked I AM...already :-)
LOL Don't they say MGs are dilirients? I'm living proof!
Thats GREAT Tobasco, lol...morning glories are addictive, I'd definitely say! Eglantyne, I have used 3 foot bamboo stakes with hemp twine from a craft store for my MGs to get going on ereligiosly, or even cut branches from a tree, whch can sometimes look VERY neat,. I have gone up to 10ft, when I had an apartment~now I have a place outside the city, the sky's the limit, lol! The Garden Depts in most stores have them, but, look around ~~their pricier in some places!!!!!
As for Parks, I have had a problem or two but they scrambled and fixed it with a replacement in a matter of days.
Gardener2005, I DO agree about people lounging about, not working and not knowing diddly~but I AM Bitter, sorry, got laid off this month; and, go to L***s, and am faced with ignorance I can hardly BEAR, (again, apologies-generalization will be my undoing) anyway I need to go and do more reading on the usage of Dmail! I just noticed I got some Four O'clocks coming up in with the Morning Glories I put in a container!~definitely a nice surprice on a cold and windy day in Vegas!
Cheers
fernman
fernman,
No need for apology. Venting is allowed and certainly understood. Nothing could be more frustrating than that.
Karen
Well here are my first MG seedlings ,also castor beans and purple moonflowers.
Planted on the 27th and most of them on the 29th Febr.

Darren,
I'll see if I have any left and if so I'll send them to you.
Ron,
thank you for posting the links.
Have to tell you I looked thru the whole list of MG's a few days ago and added this and that to my wishlist.
I noticed quite a few took my breath away and the pictures were always by you :-)
It has been cold here too, no snow though.. hopefully it will turn into Spring real soon. Several of the veggies have sprouted already, well, the winter veggies. Is your Son in the military?
Both of our sons served in the first war in Iraq but got out after 8 years whereas my husband made the military a career and stayed for 20 years +
Icy roads here and more snow coming.

I got your surprise envelope today :-)
Will plant the dwarf pink Kawaii and also the blue Akatsuki today.

THANK YOU so much for the hearty welcome in sharing your seeds.I will do the same inthe future,
Brigitte
Wow that I. Turbinata is georgeous, as is the other one~thanks Ron! I am glad Eglantyne, your family made it home well, its a crazy world there and all about, which is why i do hide in my garden. Yesterday I took a lot of pictures of little babes comin up, if i can i will post some.
~Namaste~
fernman aka :Darren
Darren,
do you still want some of the lavender moonflower seeds ?
beckygardener,
OMG :-))) !!!! I received your envelope and I searched for all the names ,pictures, printed them all until I run out of ink.
Have some soaking right now but will only plant 2 of each after someone mentioned it that one never should plant the whole 'stash' :-)
I am totally blown away with the beauty of MG's,can't believe that I didn't scrutinize them like I do with my roses before. My eyes are wide open right now !!
I am so proud to have some of your and Karen's seeds to plant .,really a exiting endeavor for me.It will be fantastik to see some of your /my first blooms, have to watch so I won't overfertilize them after all I DO want lovely blooms and not just wonderful healthy green foliage.
Thank you so very much,I am so GRATEFUL :-) and sooooooooo exited, like a little child at Christmas...I swear I am a child at heart,
Brigitte
Brigitte - Good luck germinating and growing the seeds I sent you! And I agree that it's best not to grow out the entire amount of seeds. Always a good idea to have some back-up seeds in case something unexpected happens.
Eglantyne! You really have the green thumb! Really fast germination and percentage!
My JMGs are slowly waking up and making shoots. Maybe it's a bit too chilly where I have them (basement)...
Thanks,
I don't have a GH so I have put them on top of my radiator close to a window.
