Seed starting 2008

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Here are a couple of my Moon Vine seedlings. I had them soaking into wet paper towels in baggies for 5 days and then planted them.
They really grew fast! Like--right out of their seeds and--into almost 2" leaves! Also hoping they will thrive until plant-out time. Long time to go.......

Ho--Hummm---may be getting boring here.......

This poor Moon Vine seedling has been trying for days to crawl out of it's "seed-skin". Not getting anywhere! I cannot help! The seed-skin is hard as a rock......Don't want to damage the little plant.....

I am just so happy that i will have Moon VInes again.....

And---TA-DAHHHH!!!!

Planted these all last Summer! These are "bulbils" of my beautiful, orange (speckled with dark brown) Tiger Lily. Thought--WHAT DO i HAVE TO LOSE????? Planted all the ones I picked out of the axils in this little window-box.

Had this outside all winter--covered in leaves up against the concrete foundation of my house on the south side. When i was raking all the leaves out of my beds last week, I thought i should look at it and see what has happened???? Blew me away!!!!!! There were all these little Lily sprouts--the whole W-Box full! Happy!!! Happy!!!! Will have a lot to share in a later Plant Swat this year! Wonder how long it takes for these to reach blooming size?????? Anyone???????

I DO have a picture of this Lily--now I have to go find it!

Gita, I DID receive them - that's why I said "thank you" :))) Arrived on Friday and I've added them to the bag with all the other seeds from the swap. I had everything all set to sow yesterday but Rick nixed the idea :( I don't have the space inside the house to set up the trays so was going to put them inside one of the hoop houses. We don't heat the houses but figured if it got too cold I could always bring them back to the house for the night. Since we're supposed to have temps below freezing for the next couple of nights Rick thought it was a "bad" way to get them started :( So I'm waiting until probably Tuesday, but I'm ready and can't wait, especially after seeing your "babies"!

Well I'm getting closer to planting seeds. I was working on a project for a friend. I made her tailored cushions for the window seats in her new addition. The house warming (or addition warming) party was Friday. So now I can concentrate on seed starting. Ric planted some seeds out in the garden yesterday. Radishes and a few other things. My Pansies are looking very good but way too small. Ric says next year he's going to start them at Christmas. Hey maybe they will be ready for Fall planting. LOL.

Does anyone have Passion Flower seeds. I got some last year and grew about 5 real nice plants. I gave all of them away but one I kept for myself. It had spider mites when I brought it in last year and even though I have tried to treat it. It's not looking too good I would really like to try growing them from seeds again.

Gita, I was hoping someone would answer you ? on the T Lilies. I did find an interesting site on growing them from seed, but I think it also address the bulbet (sp?) too if you look through the site.

Chris,

I know it will be a long, long time to see these come to full size! I grew a few of these from seed about 4 years ago. They are now about 6" long anmd only a small "fan" of leaves. Of course--they are in my "Yukky bed"....

To be honest--I don't remember when I planted the "Mother Lily"--don't remember at all.....
I dug it up, separated it and moved it to a couple different locations as where it was--it was being choked to death by tree roots. That whole bed is what I call my "Yukky Bed".....

G. LOL "Yukky Bed" . I have a habit of forgetting when and where I planted things too, time seems to be getting away from me.
I have a "nursery" spot in an area near my deck steps for plants that need extra time in pots to get to good planting stage, or ones that I have not found a place for yet. I started the nursery when I started buying small shrubs and realized that if I set them out where I wanted them to grow they would be a victum of hubbies lawn mowing. Now I use the spot for more then baby shrubs.

Phew, I feel better now. Holly hasn't started hers either yet, so I feel as though I am in good company. You grew some real beauties last year Holly. Yum, yum on the radishes. I can remember gardening with my granddad when I was just a wee little thing. Even today I love to pull a radish right out of the soil, wipe it off and eat it standing where I am.

Gosh, hadn't thought of gardening with him for many, many years. Now I am the grandparent and can't wait til my Miss Em can come and play in the dirt with me.

docgipe- thanks for your gourd advice- Later this summer, I'll need a virtual *smack* on the hand to get rid of those late ones that won't cure well anyway.

Gita- not bad for somebody who swore not to do seeds this year at one time......I have tiger lilies too. Cute how all the leaves are facing the same way.
My black elephant ears have shoots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My banana has mites : ^(((((((((((((((((((( treated them to an alcohol spray
Hopefully after the next couple of chilly days I will get some things going like potatos, peas, radishes...........
Corydalis in the garden getting new growth!!Daffs opening! Mom coming for dinner, gotta go!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My banana isn't doing much yet, but it still looks OK... however, I'm excited to report that my little Allspice whip/sprig is sprouting new little branchlets! Not merely extra leaves, but tiny branches seem to be forming at the top and from some of the lower leaf axils also. It might just look like a "real tree" this summer! :-)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Allspice? Uh oh ... sounds like something that I need to look into! Are we talkin' about the culinary allspice (not the mix, of course)?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yes! It's the cutest little plant that I got when we ordered those bananas... According to Wellspring nursery, culture is like a sweet bay. If that's true, I should do OK with it -- I have a very nice potted bay! :-)

The nice surprise is that the leaves are wonderfully fragrant (rub & sniff), just like a dried allspice berry.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

So... sounds like it would be content if I planted it next to my bay "tree"? Methinks that I've got something to add to my shopping list -- thanks for mentioning it.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Like sweet bay, I think it needs to come inside for the winter. I'm not sure if it's more tender than sweet bay or not -- do you keep your bay tree outside in a sheltered spot? You're a little warmer than where I am, so that might work. My bay comes into the morning room for the winter, and I'll do the same with the allspice.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Yep, mine is outside and it stays pretty small as a result of that, dying back a bit in the Winter, but that's alright by me. I don't want it to get big as I cannot afford the space.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh, Oh, Oh, Today is seed starting day. Last night I planted a tray of Double Yellow Daturas and this morning I started on the Purple Daturas. Then I'll be moving on to Scarlet Milkweed, Purple Millet, Money plants, Ornamental Grass. Lantana, and more

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

HollyAnnS, I don't have passion flower seeds, but I could probably get my neighbor to share a potted baby or two of plants. Assuming she would do that, if I see you at the upcoming Lancaster or Longwood Garden trip I could bring it.

She has the perennial passion vine for zone 6b. It is lovely, I planted one from her too last yr. Hers is huge, cascades across a beautiful arbor along with her wisteria, is beautiful!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Wind, That would be wonderful if your neighbor would have an extra plant to share. I would love to have a perennial passion vine for zone 6b. I will be coming to the Lancaster get together but will not be able to come to the Longwood get together. I would still like to find seeds for the more tropical varieties also. For some reason I was thinking that the seeds I started last year came from someone in the Mid-Atlantic group.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

I'm definitely going to the Longwood G. trip and I have my fingers crossed to make it to the Lancaster trip too. I'll email my neighbor and ask her now for you :)

There are alot of neat passion flower vines. I have passiflora lutea on my wish list:

Holly - you still want some passi seeds? I can send you up some...

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

HollyAnnS, my neighbor would be glad to share some but they dont come up until May, hence the name 'may-pop'. I forgot about that.

She said she would gladly mail you a nice potted up few when they come up if you want, but they won't be up before the Lancaster visit. Just let me know.

She also mentioned to consider planting it in a southern exposure and mulch it over in the winter and it should come back every May for you.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Chantell, I would love seeds. I was thinking that you gave me the ones that I grew last year.
Wind, Please let your neighbor how much I would love to have some Zone hardy Passi. We can make some kind of arrangements in May.
Today I potted up 6 of the Tall Phlox I got from the co-op. The rest got planted I'm soaking the Hyacinth Bean seeds I got from Gita they are almost ready to plant.
My OSP Blackies are going great guns. If anyone else needs some please let me know I have quite a few that are doing very well. My seed starting table is really starting to fill up with plants.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Holy--
Here are some pictures of my seedlings--NOT so small anymore.

The one on the left is a Hyacinth Bean--on the right, the Knidas Black M.G. The M.G. wants to climb already!!! What to do--what to do???? These were all planted on March 2nd.

Here are my Tomato seedlings--going Gung-Ho! I need to transplant them soon! Have a busy weekend coming up. Work....Crafts on Sunday.....gotta clean house and bathrooms.....

There are 3 kinds of Tomatoes--a couple of each. That's all I have room for.....
--Cherokee Purple (seed from last year from Jill's plant I got at hart's)
--Sun Gold cherry Tomato
--Mortgage Lifter (Estlers)--(got some seeds last year from Melissa Jensen of UT)

This should keep me in Tomatoes for the season!

Gita, maybe you can let that MG climb the post of your plant stand... you'll have to unwind it to plant it out, but at least you won't be unwinding it from a dozen other seedlings! (I had a flat of them last year that got all tangled up together... tried my patience, I can tell you!)

I'm still sowing. Something is eating leaves on my seedlings, and I can't spot it... do I have a mouse? grasshoppers? I don't know, but I think I'll spray some Neem around and set a couple of mousetraps. Sheesh. I'd better sow some backups.

I put out a couple more "winter" sowing bins today, 8 types of seed in each... hey, we have some chilly nights left! LOL

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Here are some assorted Basil seedlings--from Jill, I am sure!

I have flax and salvia that are blooming right now. I just raised my lights and will keep plugging along until it's safe to put them outside.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Here are my Digitalis seedlings. Holly--I had them on my list to get from you--but you said you did not give them to me. I think you did!
It does not matter! They are all growing well.....

Last one for now----
Here are some of my Daturas. They sure take their time. I am just glad that they came up. 3 weeks to germinate--now they are at a stand-still.....!

wrightie--You have stuff blooming??????? Are they in your yard or inside?

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Yep, but I started mine really early. They're under lights in my cellar - a similar set up to yours.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My friend Theresa brought that Italian basil seed back from Italy with her... I think in 2001! It's my favorite culinary basil. I love basil! I think my obsession enthusiasm came through in last week's article about incorporating lots of different basil varieties into the landscape, http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/752/.

Oh, Doc, just to follow up about your little citrus tree. I asked last weekend when we stopped in at DPF, and it's definitely either a Calamondin Orange or a Kumquat, LOL. They weren't sure which, said it could be either, as they had both at the time (and now they no longer have the Kumquat, so maybe you bought it). Real helpful, eh?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I'm still holding off on my MG. I have quite a few nice seeds I'm thinking of waiting till mid April. That would be about a month before I could plant them outside. I was wondering if you can pinch back MG seedlings?
I may have made a mistake. I planted those Indian Blanket Sunflower seeds from Sally. You know they get 6ft tall. I only planted them a couple of days ago and they are up and heading for the bright lights.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill,

I think i will transplant my Vines soon in 4" or 5" pots and then give them a mini trellis to "climb on" and then just plant the whole thing outside and let the vines find their own way in their permanent trellises.

I have never had this many climbing vines to plant as i will have this year! Plus--I am sure I will have a zillion volunteers from last year's Grandpa Ots M.G. and also from my cardinal climber. I really have to decide which 2 I want to plant in the same pot to share the "glory".....Like------wouldn't Grandpa Otts look great with the Moon Vine? Or----my Cardinal Climber with some dazzling M.G.?
I have so many decisions to make this year as I keep acquiring new plants and my space just is a cramped as ever. I find myself going more and more to containers for some things....
Oh, well! Everything usually works out one way or another......

This is an Oncidium Orchid from the Rawlings Conservatory. Just loved the arching stem---there were so many pretty ones.......I was there last saturday for their Spring Bulb Show.....

Gita , your seedlings look great! My 2 Daturas have their 1st set of true leaves and decided to take a rest too, I guess they are like any baby they need there rest to grow big and strong.

I planted some more seeds today, I stayed home from work, felt a bit under the weather this morning. Mild case to stomach, intestinal bug. I don't stay home from work very often.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly--You are smart to hold off on these fast-growers!

To me this seed thing this year has been a "live and learn" thing!
We never stop learning---do we?

Many other M.G. are up and really healthy looking. I did not take pictures of everything.....Don't want to monopolize this Thread. It can become just so much "Ho-Hum" after a while....

That's a great photo, Gita... love the enthusiasm in your smile! I can tell you were having a blast.

Jill, I agree with you, it is nice to see what ever one is growing and how things are coming along.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I have to take my camera downstairs... there are little buds on my 'Micro Tom' tomato plants! I've got them in 4 inch pots now. (So, anybody who brought one back from the swap -- go ahead and pot it up into it's "big boy" pot, LOL.) When it starts blooming, it's going upstairs on the window sill. They're so cute!
