Everything is out of the GH

Lindenhurst, NY

What lovely blooms. I can't wait to smell a plumeria:-)

Can you post a pic of your greenhouse? I really want one.

Yuma, AZ

Ouch hail. Is everything OK?
Maureen you can see pictures of it about halfway down the main plumeria page there is a thread there.

i got my cuttings from the co op today!!!!

Lindenhurst, NY

Thanks Dbrooks. I'll go take a look.

Mulberry, FL

Great pictures you are blessed with all those flowers so early. Is the smell strong this time of year there? I hate the flowers early in the spring because I miss the intense smell. You have some really nice plants thanks for sharing

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

ugh! Now everything is back in the GH cuz of this dumb surprise cold front...... This should be the last one this year

Yuma, AZ

Thanks Dana,
Yes the smell has been great, but we have had temps over 80 during the day and over 50 at night for the past few weeks. That has really helped. It has been over 90 in the day and 58 at night at my house for the past couple of days, this should really bring the color and smell out.
Good luck diehrd.

Very cool, do you heat it, or does it retain enough heat during the day?
Davie

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

well tonight i'm heating it, not cuz i need to, but because i want everything to keep on growing, and not think that is is still winter, because winter left a long time ago. usually i just let the sun heat it in the day, but on really cold nights, i heat it, but that is only like, 20 nights each winter

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

DHS - how did everything fare last nite? I turned on my little heater too...it was 29 this morning according to the therm in Scotts big truck...brrrr...no frost here but where his truck is in the next town over they had frost...have you started your plumeria yet? If so how did you start it? I need to get busy and start mine but I got the canna and phlox co-ops in the mail ....decisions decisions what to do first LOL

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

it was great... we were a full 10 degrees warmer than yall, but by the way i prepared and they way people dressed today, you'd have thought it was january in alaska.... ok, well i exaggerated a little, but you get my point! lol i put mine in pots, usually about one gallon size, but they varied a bit. i put potting soil or a mixture of potting soil and sand, (the coarse kind, like in lexington and the sandhills), after dippping the calloused ends in water real quick, shaking them off, then in Rootone. and put them around 2-3 inches deep.

PS i know Newberry is on the other side of the lake from Lexington, which straddled the fall line and had both red clay from the piedmont and coarse reddish-tan sand from the sandhills, but it swithces like, every 5 feet, and a distance as big as the lake could make a huge difference in soil. sooo i guess my question is, what kind of soil do y'all have in Newberry? are yall above the fall line in the piedmont or below i the sandhills? if y'all are in the sandhills, you could mix cocopeat and miracle gro potting soil with some sand and you'd have yourself a purty nice well draining potting mix

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

Pretty sandy overall ...some good soil at 6.5 mixed with alot of sand in places...it's weird how it will change from nice dark soil to gritty sand two feet over....no clay at all

DHS Good to hear your plants all made it through.

Contrast of old and new flowers on Fruit Salad. All three branches are blooming at once. All three have a slightly different intensity of orange. The oldest inflo is the palest.

Unknown pink from Evelyn in Hawaii. You can smell this one from a couple of feet away. Very sweet plumeria scent.
Thanks for looking,

Very nice pics, Davie! Thanks for sharing them. I think I have the pink one that you got from Evelyn. It has been given a few names. It goes by Pink Starfish, Pink Widow, among other names. It has a really nice carnation fragrance. Angus Selection #3 smells very similar but even stronger. It's a keeper.

Thanks Clare, That looks like the same one. It came to me as Makkik Kathy. I have a few of these. NIce growing habit. Very nice scent.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

nice flowers, y'all!
well, red, you got some good soil to mix with some miracle grow and cocopeat... i pefer it over just straight potting mix. also, yall have much coarser sand, so it is better for roots as it doesn't compact as much as our fine powdery beach sand does

Anyone in zone 7b with Plumeria? I put mine outside a few weeks ago, but had to pull them back in a few days due to low temp. They are back out again Wednesday this week. No leaf on mine yet, but here is an unknown yellow...

looking good davie! you're gonna put yuma on the map as a plumeria friendly zone.

lilimerci - that's a beaut! does it smell like peaches? it looks similar to aztec gold.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

I can't remember the smell. It's been so long since I've had blooms. Buds got frosted last year, so I waited all year and did not get to see any blooms. It usually buds in mid September. May be I should feed it earlier this year.

Yuma, AZ

Thanks Dete, Sometimes I wonder if I am crazy.
Wait till I take pictures of my new clients plumeria. She has the most killer back yard. At least 8 Plumeria TREES before I saw her back yard. I delivered her a 4' Puu Kahea and the 3' Rainbow Starburst above last week to add to her collection. I am delivering a few more every week until she fills it up. Beyond that shes got small avacados trees that are blooming, every citrus you could think of, Ti, Hong Kong Orhid trees, etc... I cant wait for all her plumeria to bloom, its gonna be insane.
Are you a member of the Phoenix Plumeria Society? I think I may go to the plant sale they are holding in May.
Lili, I would feed your plumeria with some Osmocote or Dynamite slow release as soon as you see a few new leaves, may help.

Tucson, AZ

not a member of the society.

i might have some sales for you since i'm all out. i know some people that want to buy them.

Yuma, AZ

I'm just joining up. Thought you might be a member since you are so close to Phoenix.
D-mail me would love all the help I can get. Thank you.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

Thanks dbrooks. Also, you're making me drool about your client's yard. Please ask if u can take pictures so we can all enjoy. LOL!

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

sorry all...quick question if you all don't mind giving me your input...how soon after potting up your plumi do you see roots or growth results? I also read to only water once a week...yikes...that barely seems like enough....is that an accurate article I read? I had a horrible dream the other nite that I went outside to check on them and they fell into mush as I touched them to feel how firm they were...I don't even want to know what Freud would say about that one...LOL

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

i water mine when dry...just to keep the soil moist.. the leaves are a sign of root growth... more leaves=more roots i think
ok...now to type a 6 page essay... due tomorrow... that i only have barely a page and a half of so far at 930 at night

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

ohh whats the paper on? come on...get some dg help here...we each help with a page and you will be done in no time! LOL

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

Well don't ask Hilary to help you write that paper... but that's a topic for another day, another forum :)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

dont worry..... i would never let her touch anything that affected my grade.... just thinking of her makes my brain shrink lol

PS no offense hilary supporters!

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

lili - how are your plumis doing after that last storm? I see we are in for some more cold weather next week..again...hope the weatherman is wrong...

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

I actually only have 2 Plumerias, one of them is a cutting I bought on eBay last year, so it's very small. BUT, I noticed some cuts from the hail storm we had a few weeks ago. It hardened over already so I think it should be OK.

However, we had a big storm tonight and came home around 10pm to a road full of cars and a police car in front of my driveway. I thought may be one of the neighbor's older kids were having Spring Break party and police was called due to noise. But instead a tree from my yard (might have been hit by lightning) fell over into another yard, blocking the rest of the street off so neighbors couldn't get home. Luckily, it fell into the street instead of into our home and did not hit another neighbor's home either. We were very lucky.

We are also getting cold weather Sunday, only hi in the 50's and dropping below 40 for lo. I'm going to have to drag the container plants back in Sunday night.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

well I am glad your home and the neighbors homes are all alright...that had to be scary coming home to....
