Rooting a Saucer Magnolia

My neighbors purchased one of these last year, but unfortunately their 3 boys didn't repect the little tree very much and it has slowly been broken off bit by bit.
I was over talking to them the other day and noticed the next to last stem laying over . I asked and they let me have it (they looked at me pretty weird LOL)
My little cutting is about 18" long and actually has a bud at the tip.
Anyway I was wondering if anyone has ever rooted one and has some tips.

These are not my words. I copied and pasted this from an unattributed article on AllExperts.com which answered an inquiry similar to yours about propagating magnolias.

Seedlings will sometimes appear under trees, but most propagation is done through seed, cuttings taken in the summer, or from grafting. Cutting grown plants are vastly superior to most seedlings because they begin flowering the first year or two after propagation while seedlings may take 15 to 20 years to bloom. Rooting magnolias is not easily done. Even with intermittent mist systems and rooting hormones, the percentage of successfully rooted cuttings is often very low and best left to nurserymen and other professional horticulturists."

My thought is "Nothing Ventured - Nothing Gained" Get some rooting hormone, shade it and keep it moist.

Thanks for the info! I went ahead and gave it a whirl.
I was kind of thinking along the same "nothing ventured" line myself. I have always admired these trees, but they tend to be pretty expensive and I know we are right on the border of being too far south for them so I've never taken the plunge with one. Hopefully this one will take!
