Gordon, I run here and there to terrorize mama cause she does it to me! HE HE HE
Wanted: different kniphofia (red hot poker)
You go girl!
She is ornery there Gordon, best watch her! HA HA HA
Also a little on the slow side at dmailin'. But if you live in Fate you best beware of it!
In her defense-thinking twice about this now-nah, I won't say it! LOL
Mama I don't know you but if Tammy says be carefull I will be Baby! Please dmail me when it is convienent for you dear. See I can be nice!
LOL I think she is a good girl, somewhere in there! HA HA HA
tehetehetehe.
ain't yall a gabby bunch? kara, shame on you for bringing that nasty site into this discussion. i think i'll call 'ol tony tomorrow and see what co-op prices would be? "thank" he'd drop 'em down 2 bits or so? lol.
now nw, we talked. and i woulda dmailed you but i understood you were going to dmail me, which you did. we have started kara.. so leave her alone. lol.
thank you villaluna. lmk what you like.
also...everyone who is mailing me a plant if it is under 13 oz. send that thang first class and save a little postage money if you can. these plants ought to make it fine this time of year as long as you wrap those roots tightly. and if you have more plants to trade and you like more than one of mine lmk and i am sure we can do a bigger trade. but if it's just one plant DO TRY TO SEND IT FIRST CLASS IF YOU CAN.
Yes maam! I hope they do a co-op but I doubt it! I was just being uppity. Tammy does that to me but she went nitey nite. WE's all good and square!
Gordon, what is it that I do to you? :)
Tony, do a co-op??? If that ever happened, it would be awesome. I don't know if I'd hold my breath, though. He pretty much sells out of lots of his stuff...Note the catalog online, and he's only had one open house so far this year.
The more research I do on these plants that are especially hard to find here, the more I understand the prices on things. SO many of these beauties from other countries are not just hard to find (Knifophia is African, my favorite continent for plants), they take a very long time to grow out, especially if from seed, and are harder to grow in general because they are picky about their growing requirements. I got some of the knifophia mix seeds I found locally at Lowe's, nothing special, but I can't wait to see if they grow.
you're right kara. i have some seed started baby glads and baby dierama. i don't think they take as long as kniphofias but at least a couple of years.
I found some kniphofia seeds at Lowes as well. I planted them over a month ago, only 2 have sprouted and one of them only in the last day or so. Verrrryyy slow.
Anne
Anne, you bring up a great point, it seems like most bulb seeds require at the very least 30-60 days to germinate under ideal conditions, some much longer, some faster. I am new to this, so just an observation. And then the time required to produce blooms on top of it. I think I may have found something in gardening that will help me be more patient, lol, besides crinum blooms
the glads germinated in days. the dierama germinated in at least a week. i winter sowed eucomis last year so they don't count. never tried kniphofias. just curious anne, but where are your seed trays located? i am thinking with heat they might go faster or do you have heat?
They are in the house on a table in front of an ESE facing window. They are in morning sun till around 1pm. I used seed soil. I don't particularly like this kind of soil. It's very difficult to gauge the water needs as it feels dry even after watering.
Anne
edited to say that I also have daylillies, gaillardia, scabiosa, coral nymph salvia, and datura going there as well. Only the datura and scabiosa responded quickly.

i used a different kind of dirt this year. not real high dollar but i have had real good luck with it. it's not like that seed starter stuff that is full of peat and seems to take forever to wet it. i did get it at home depot and it's called GARDEN SAFE all purpose organic POTTING SOIL. it has the same nitrogen content as seed starter dirt so it is recommended for seed starting. and it's very easy to wet. the bag is a lot bigger than home depot's seed starting bags and costs about 8.00. it is a 1 cu. ft. bag.
i used hot tap water to wet the soil, then sowed the seeds in metal square pie plate type things, then put them inside baggies on top of the refrigerator until germination began.
i don't have any seeds though that are so called "hard to germinate" except for the goat's rue. that one is difficult as it has poor germination. so far though i have 5 plants. i killed the first bunch...only 2 germinated. i winter sowed these and they are doing fine even after the SNOW we had last night. when i found them this morning they had a layer of ice. i almost cried. but after i removed it they seem to be none the worse for it today.
Yeah I know what you mean. My confederate rose had put off the prettiest of little green leaves and one of my peach trees was blooming......well, not anymore:( This is really my first year trying to start so many things from seed. I have a bunch of brug babies on a bench in my living room and am thinking of putting them out in my greenhouse so that I can devote more space for seed starting. Now if I could just not find little kitty pawprints in the soil.......and no not growing pussy willows. lol I just keep putting things in their way, plants, magazines, lamps, pots with dirt in them, I know how thoughtless of me. lol
