where do i get bantam turkens??

Edgartown, MA

i would really like a few bantam turkens. i know they exist. but exactly where can a girl get her hands on some bantam turken chicks. i would say eggs but i have never incubated and i am scared. i really would love to go to the post office and get a box of peeping bantam turkens. any ideas would be great.

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

I saw hatching eggs for them on either eggbid or ebay within the last week or so. Sorry - can't remember which place but it was one of the two and the listing was titled "mini turkens". I tried the search on both sites but came up empty. Keep your eyes on those two sites and you may find them, but most likely not chicks, probably eggs. We can talk you thru the hatch - no problem. Hope that helps...Scott

I just found mini turkens on eggbid, but they don't come up when you do a search?????? Go to eggs, bantam, then look for red turken eggs in the list.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Are they raised for eggs or meat? and do they taste like chicken? now while I think that was funny.. really, is it a turkey flavor? can they be raised with chickens?

Very interesting

Lodi, United States

I've been looking at standard turkens longingly. They are just a breed of chicken with a feather mutation that makes them look a little like turkeys, frans 530. No feathers on their necks and less than most on their bodies. They are suppose to be very sweet, healthy and excellent dual purpose egg layers. They are also suppose to handle heat very well and need less protein in their feed. But they do look odd. I think they are cute, but I lot of people think they are "shocking looking".

They look to me like they fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down...But they certainly would add variety to the flock...Come to think of it, I've never won any beauty contests myself...Scott

ROFLMAO, Scott!!!

I've never heard that expression before, but it sounds good. I will have to remember it. Thanks

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

I think I really like hanging out in this forum...

One day you'll have to post a pic of yourself Scott... but please not next to one of those baby chicks... you'll never win the contest against them.. ;-)

I miss my ugly ugly turken roo. Here he is, RIP Medusa/ My Duder, the ugliest roo on the block.

And his ugly wasn't just skin deep. No, it went right through to the bone. What an aggressive guy he was!

BTW, meyer hatchery is selling day old turken chicks this season. I might not be able to resist...

Lodi, United States

I'm starting to wonder if the "calm and docile" breeds produce roosters that are more aggressive toward people because they aren't as fearful of them? Or is it just that people are more suprised when a formerly sweet rooster turns on them? I only had 4 roosters until they were 4 months old and one of the Buff Orpingtons was so affectionate that I feel like I gave away a puppy. But maybe he would have been totally unafraid to attack when he got older. Please tell me some roosters stay nice......

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

ByH, So odd, pretty, yet ugly all at the same time...

Catscan, I would hate to believe that theory.. are you saying as peeps we should bat them around, then they will appreciate niceties when the grow up? nahhhhh

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

yes, some do. mine did. Buckeyes...

BigBuffy, as far as a good source for bantam turkens, in red or white, you can get them from Urch/Turnlund in MN. dpurch@netzero.net phone 507/451-6782. They are breeders of heritage birds, i have had them highly recomended to me by other breeders. You can even get eggs. very reasonably.

i want some too! just don't have the space this year.

alcohol improves everybody's looks esp if the look-ees are drinking too.

you have such fabulous etiquette & manners, sir. find a pea in your soup?

Foley, MO

I think if I got turkens everyone would think that my other chickens were picking on them, lol!

Lodi, United States

I thought the same thing--my neighbors would turn me in to animal welfare and no one would believe they were suppose to look like that. But I still like that jaunty little top hat on a long skinny neck--they remind me of the character Don Knotts played on Three's Company. Mr. Furley?

Scott, you looks perfectly crazy...but your daughter is so pretty I'm sure she got your looks without the maineiac gene.

Wanna bet? She is going to be the death of me - a true "wild child". Notice I posted a pic with my hair in the shadows? Well lets just say, I'm glad that silver is "in".

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

My Turkens, roosters included were the nicest of all my chickens. They are a dual purpose breed, wonderful large brown eggs, and supposedly easier to pluck with the reduced number of feathers (can't vouch for that, mine were pets). They did very well for me in S Florida, but I know people who say they also do well in cold climates.

Antrim, NH

I'm thinking about getting a couple of standard turken chicks this year, I do miss my ugly/pretty and very evil roo. He did fine here in NH. I am pretty sure they come from Eastern Europe somewhere, which has cold winters.

Lodi, United States

They are supposed to be from Transylvania/Romania--which does get very cold. I've heard they do well in the cold as well as heat and are "extremely tough". I think somewhere I read that they are studying them because they seem to be immune to a lot of viral diseases.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

mine are 11th-14th generation turken x silkies aka showgirls they have won in shows and a virtual show today does that count?? hey scott, do ya still think they r ugly even with their pretty fur coats on? lmbo.

When your hand is feeling better, could you.. for us new folk..
start a new thread and take us for a walk threw a show...

how does one start showing..? Where do you begin?
I always thought the fairs were mostly for the kids.. now I am reading.. lots.. and its not
about kids.

I just read on BYC that their is a regular swap meet 5 times a year just an hour north of me.. first one being, April 1st....... yep I'll be there!

Are my Silkies going to be THAT pretty?

Don't hurt me.... do you eat silkies?

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

nope, lol it's all dark meat and dark bone but i do eat there eggs. one i only like white meat and 2 they are to much like my kid's i don't think i could as silly as that sounds and most have names. we actually have never eaten any of our birds we sell or give away the extras. we were thinking about getting cornish x's though to butcher this year.

let me know how the byc meet goes i just saw something on that the other day but i didn't read it yet. only thing i've done byc way is the pa chickenstock in fall of 06. last year to far away so we didn't go.

yes i will post something for ya when i'm better i'm a pa liceased poultry tech so i do blood work for exhibitions and npip and i also help people register for shows here and help set them up and tear down. will be glad to answer any questions ya all have.
i see mostly adults show in open classes not many kid's they are usually in with 4-h or ffa not more than a few in open classes where we show.

"Are my Silkies going to be THAT pretty?" that depends, lol there is a big difference between qualities of a bird. hatchery stock and pet quality is no where near exhibition stock. it takes alot to get them to that quality sometimes years of breeding. good stock and hard work but if ur willing to do it is well worth it and very rewarding. here is one of my exhibition hens when she was a pullet, i luv this pic.

[QUOTE]threw a show[QUOTE/] please don't throw the show.. just walk us through it.

I have so many questions I don't even know where to start, so I guess I will just keep reading and making my lists and stashing my info.. and of course asking my little questions along the way...

I really had no plans of eating the silkies.. I was just curious.. I bought the heavier birds for eating, the silkies are to help me garden.. and they are pretty to look at while we work together.

Very pretty picture... is there chicken grooming? I think I read somewhere just a mention of bathing before a show...

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

woops did i type that wrong? lol sorry if i did. it's ard trying to type with my hand wrapped and i got 4 kid's running amock, can't think and tired still too.

there is nothing wrong with eating them i would if i had too. asian people love them and they are suppost to be more healthier to eat cause of the drk meat. i got eggs to hatch for layers and meat sofar but since so many of us i want to add broilers for the freezer also. i i used to raise bantam and standard turkens but it has been a few years and silkies have always been my favs so with the showgirls i get the best of both worlds. :0)

anytime ya have questions shoot me a d-mail and i'll hlp ya with what i can, not a prob. yep i bath them all about once a mth in warmer weather and ones going to show get it 2 days before every show. usually i'm soaked by the time i'm done, rotfl. with pine bedding and the way their pens are built they usually stay clean like that most of the year on their own but winter mths it's harder. when i get the chance i'll d-mail ya my site addy to see pics of some more of my silkies. i'm gonna crash early my pain meds r kicking in,lol.
talk to u tomarrow and thanks for the kind words,
silkie

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Silkiechick, years ago on BirdFarm (which I cannot find any more)there was lots of egg-trading going on, especially the Turken/Silkie showgirls (and some frizzles thrown in). Are your birds in any way related to that escapade?

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

i have never heard of birdfarm and i'm not the origonal breeder of them who crossed the turken to the silkie so anything is possible i guess. i'm at least the 3rd breeder in my lines so i consider them my lines which is keystone bantams now. although they have been bred with alot of great lines along the way i have out crossed them so they are no longer 100% anyone elses unless they are my origional breeders. i can trace them back with breeders to 9th generation because i know the breeders from then till now and what stock they had and i used. before that i would have to ask one of the other breeders where they obtained their stock.

with my 13th generations i have added the white recesive gene and babies with all 5 toes on both feet haveing foot feathers. as far as i know noone else has been able to add these features let alone together so we are very happy and proud of that. this year we will be select breeding and working hard to make more improvements on our whites as well as other colors as more of our girls start laying. these new babies that are hatching with improvements will be kept for futer breeders and eventually my origional stock will fade out as time goes on and will be sold once i have a new flock with the improvements i want kept in them.

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

I was just curious. I had no way to hatch back then, but did send eggs, most to "George" who I think was in one of the Dakotas...it's been many years, probably far more than 11 "chicken" generations :))
It's a great memory, I remeber it was lots of fun to follow the progress, Bowties were a big part of it, as I remember.
Would you consider sharing your site address with me, as well? I'l;l finally be getting chickens again this spring.
Margo

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Silkie, I just ran by your other pages..
Very nice.. I am interested in forwarding your info on SA to my Sis, she is in PA and has her 2 grandchildren living with her.. she trieds to be their wildlife adviser.. teacher.. mentor, well her and Papa..

You are just a wealth of info..

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

cat, that is really kool do u mean the origional breeder of sg's??? i think i know what u are talking about now i saw something not to long ago on the comp and skimmed through it i wonder if i can find it again. i think the name george was in their somewhere if i remember right and i also saw some something about tradeing and swapping about getting them started. u got me curious now i'll have to do some research and check my history in my comp, lol. yes all but 2 of mine have bowties, lol. yes i can give ya all the link to my site just d-mail me for it so i don't miss anyone. it is posted in a few threads here so some could see pics i have several albums with garden pics and mostly poultry on it.

thanks fran, what is sa? forgive my blondeness, lol. kool i have 5 kid's so the poultry world has been alot of great info and teaching for them.

ya know i was thinking today. i'd love to have bantam turkens again but they are extreamy harder to find now adays for some reason. i wonder if u could somehow reverse the genes in a showgirl to get them back to turkens? ya all think that is possible to get all that silkie out???

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

sa = your other site (snaring america) yep, that be blonde today hehehe

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

rotfl, i've never seen anyone write initials for it, yep definately a blonde momemt, lol. there is all kinds of info on there for trapping and wildlife as well as pics and stories of everyones lines for all over the states. my name is vixen on there and hubby is snaring america she can pm us anytime if she needs anything. we have a non profit kid's program also to help kid's get equipment she can find info there about it as well. only thing is ya have to register free to look at the site or post or anything most forums on it are private since we have alot of kid's on there.
thanks,
silkie
