king of the wild frontier.
the shows that go on...
What was with the hat?
kept his head warm.
But seriously, you say "hi, my name is David" and they say "Ovid" and you say "no, David"? C'mon. xx, Carrie
Try introducing yourself as Harper. People think it's "Barbara", "Hunter", "Heather", "Parker"... once I got "Harbor". When they finally get it, they say, "Oh! Like Harper Valley PTA! or Harper's Bazaar!"
hahahahahaha.
Harper's Bazaar. (or bizarre...)
i like the Harper Valley PTA song...
; )
Or Harpo?
My next project:
http://ctgmc.org/cgmcseason.html
My 7th (!) show with the company, but this is the 1st with a new director, etc...
I only got "Harpo" once in a while. Usually by some immature male.
Hey, I resemble that remark!
LOL, Victor, indeed you do! xx, Carrie
Ha ha ha!!
Which spelled backwards is Oprah....
Carrie, People confused Ovid & me all the time. (which spelled backwards is Devo--well almost)
And now, back to our regularly scheduled thread, already in progress...
Eric has hired a carpenter to work with him and the students to build A Midsummer Night's Dream. i convinced him to run an ad, and he got a couple responses right away, and yesterday, he hired a guy.
i can't believe he didn't do this long ago - he has been doing way too many jobs for one person. He thought that once some students got better trained, that would be enough, but they either don't know enough, or they graduate, or they get busy/distracted with other things - academic and un-.
So, hopefully, this will be an improvement to our quality of life...
That's a good idea, Amy. Sadly, too many students don't know enough AND graduate.
i've been gone for 10 days and no one noticed.
i feel very sad.
Sorry - did you say something?? Hee hee. Welcome back. I knew you were in Houston. How was it?
How are the cats? Are they ignoring you? Were your eyes better when you were away?
We got back Sunday.
Houston was nice - or the convention center was. The cats were annoyed. My eyes were not significantly better.
i am so pathetic, i have been lurking hoping someone would wonder where i was.
i am beyond stressed out with the show i am doing right now. i can hardly type because my hands are shaking. i am doing the jobs of at least one and a half people as it is, and the one thing they promised i wouldn't have to do on this show (think about/deal with sound) guess what - their guy quit. And everyone just assumes i will do it - like no big deal. And it really is too late now to find anyone else.
There are only so many things my brain can hold all at once. Doing things alone makes it SO MUCH easier to make mistakes.
Whoopee - i can do a half-ast job in several departments at once!
Sorry, done ranting, back to making mic tracking sheets.
The cats will forgive you - when they think you have suffered enough, that is. Now you know that the cats aren't the cause of your eye problems and you can give them names!
staying in my corner.

i am their stage manager and lighting director. It's my 7th show with the company, 1st with a new director and a LOT of other changes. And, of course, we have to open it in the 2nd biggest place we play. Totally nervewracking. Usually we start in a smaller venue, with very little lighting, which gives me a chance to learn to call the sound/mic Qs before i have to integrate all the light Qs. This time it is all at once, and i get a follow spot - which i've always wanted - but it is a whole other series of Qs to call. And there are prerecorded tracks, not just live piano, and those are Qs for me to call too.
Yikes.
(and i don't think the lighting guy in Hartford likes me much.)
You'll do fine!!!!!!!! Heard great things about Patti LuPone's Gypsy.
easy for you to say!
i am doing too many jobs. They promised me someone else would deal with sound this time. But that sort of didn't happen.
bite sized chunks. i have to keep thinking in bite sized chunks.
i should have an assistant. maybe more than one.
Ask for one more man to rain down so he can help...
Geez - i think i have 24 in the show, plus the director, the sound designer (grr), and all the union guys at the theatre tomorrow.
i think i need a woman for help.
On the plus side, i have learned the actual words to a lot of Bee Gees and ABBA songs.
Who knew!?!
Sure you want to admit that??
"We can try to understand the New York Times effect on man." huh?!?!
and
"Diggin' the dancing queen."
(i always thought it was "Begin the dancing queen.")
But i have been pretty depressed and frustrated with this situation. i came back from Houston to learn that (from my point of view) the sound guy had basically quit - well, wasn't doing ANY of the prep work, and wasn't coming to any rehearsals.
Not a good Monday.
No supervisor involvement??
In this case, i don't know what that means.
He is a friend of the director, knows lots about sound, but is not a theatre person. He made all the backing tracks we are using.
The director feels he didn't explain the job enough, that there is prep work to be done, not just in the theatre - but to me it doesn't matter - i just had to do it.
But i was bold enough to say i couldn't do everything last night (which is hard), so now some of the guys are assigned to put down marks and measures onstage in the venues, which will save me quite a bit of time. So that is good.
Tensions run high at this point, invariably.
i want to start seeds.
sigh.
Good for you Amy. You have to let them know what you need!
Yes good for you Amy. The director maybe should be more in charge so everyone knows where they stand and what is expected of them.
Sounds like you're in a tough position Amy, but i have confidence that you'll do fine. There's no business like show business, after all. Did you know that the kids in ABBA didn't speak a word of English, just had phonetic cgharts or something to read? x, Carrie
i think he is doing as good a job as possible - he is kind of an emergency replacement - he used to do this, but has been away with a "real" job for years now.
But i am really scared about this today.
i wonder - will it be my Waterloo?
How can i
Even try
To go on?
Can't they hear me S.O.S.?
Will i crumble? Will i lay down and die?
o no, not i - i will survive!
Y'know - It's alright, it's ok - i'll live to see another day.
I love musicals but the idea of people bursting into song/dance always cracked me up.
Think about it. In real lif, would a bunch of people suddenly start singing? And why would everyone know the words?
What if your life was a musical?
Every once in a while I'll be doing something - housework, gardening, whatever - and I'll pause for a second and think to myself, "If my life was a musical, this is where a song would be."
Check out this video. Imagine having your lunch in the food court of a mall and a musical number unfolds in front of you!

I think I need a napkin!
Me too!
Boy, talk about distracting -- I need a napkin, I need to take off my shirt in Abercrombie & Fitch, I need to freeze in that train station in NYC, I need to call somebody's cellphone and be in the synchronized swimming swim team in the Olympics in Athens, Greece. Actually that youtube is a lot like my house, lol, except our choreography ain't that good! xx, Carrie
