CLOSED: Identify This Bird Please - Volume 6.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I thought the bird on the right was a House Finch, but the more I look at it, it looks different from the other females. Am I just looking to hard or what??

Thanks Pelle,

Whoopee!! That is the first time a Mockingbird has come to the feeder. Two firsts today, the Mockingbird and the Red-Winged Blackbird.

Thanks resin............those Red-tails come in so many variations it's hard to be sure.

The Rough-legged Hawk is a first for me. That makes four firsts for this trip

Looks more like a Fox Sparrow to me.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I think you may be right, pelle. Just checking my book and it say's Fox Sparrow scratch like a chicken and that is what it was doing! lol

Klamath River, CA

I agree with pelle....looks like a twin to the Fox Sparrow I have here.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Maybe this is to far for ID, you'll have to take out your binoculars , for this one. It was gliding, going in circle, over a gravel pit and a frozen river.

A Buteo. More than that, I fear impossible to say!

2nd picture ... Sorry, can't tell

Jane

P.S. I'm with you on not knowing a lot about ducks; but I'm learning slowly. Many of the ducks I see defy identification ... they are crossbreeds or hybrids (sort of like a mutt in the dog world).

Oooo, thank you! New ones for my list!!

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Redheads for the 2nd pic as well. The grey-brown bird in both pics is a female Redhead.

Resin, Do you think this is a Female Hairy? I've been thinking so.

Hi Mrs Ed, See the 2 black spots on the outer white tail feather?

That says its a Downy.

Hairys have pure white outer tail feathers.

Pelle

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Downy, there are dots on the outer tail feathers.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

rats, I haven't seen a Hairy in ages here. Well thanks you two. I was looking at the beak and thought it seemed big for a downy.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

I keep doing the same thing Mrs. Ed...think I have a Hairy and then see those spots!! I haven't seen a Hairy for awhile either.

Melbourne, FL

Took this a while ago. It was flying around in circles like a Hawk and I assumed it was a Hawk, but has the coloring of an Osprey. This was a distance away from me.

I hadn't seen one for several weeks now. In fact I was out walking when I spotted this one. Guess they are in the area still. :(

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

I've had my first visiting woodpecker! It wasn't very big, smaller than my mockingbird. Is it a Downy or Hairy?

This little wren has been checking out my ornamental birdhouse. He looks smaller when he sits in the very top of my pineapple water fountain to bathe. He is very loud at times. Is he a Carolina?

(fyi...that is my neighbor's house that is bright yellow)

Black spots on the outer white tail feathers, and a short bill, so Downy.

Bewick's Wren

Edit: correction! House Wren doesn't have a white supercilium
