I like that look too Steve. It also looks like you also have a nice staggered blooming with some of them being later in that last shot. That will prolong the hyacinth season too; which I need to think more on. Mine were one simultaneous flash and then all gone. Looks like you did a lot of research on that there--to a great effect!
Hyacinths
Steve and Debbie,
I agree that the mixed colors and staggered bloom times are more pleasing to my eye. I think the huge mass of one color looks a little bit too 'formal -Victorian-Park' for most suburban homes. Doesn't suit my extremely informal cottage garden, either. I admire gardens with groups of 3 or 5(sort of like small bouquets) or so spread around to give enough color ot catch the eye and complement other plantings without becoming a carpet bedding scheme. I love photos of the late Christopher Lloyd's garden. He was the master of color plantings, in my opinion.
My garden is about as far away as possible from that ideal, but I can still dream.
NIce color on that one Chris!
=)
I agree, that is a beautiful color. Nice close-up, Chris.
o ya I'm all over this one. Thanks for posting the pic Chris. It truly is a blue. So many are are purple or lilac. Any one else have a real blue?
Hi dahlianut,
You asked me much earlier to compare the pale lilac 'City of Bradford?' that I have with 'Top Hit'. Top Hit finally opened up this week. And today , although City of Bradford has been open for a while and possibly faded, I got a photo of a cut stem of my 'City of Bradford'? next to 'Top Hit'. You were correct that 'Top Hit is definitely much more pink than the pale blue/gray lilac of my 'City of Bradford?'. It was quite overcast so the colors seem truer than the photos I tried in full sun.
Chris
I like Amsterdam - that is beautiful
Bummer! Steve. That's a rude awakening. :>(
I think hyacinths can survive some snow (at least the bulbs can) but not sure what it will do to the flowers and buds .
Chris
I sure like Amsterdam and the Rossette; seems like a double and without that center striping seen on so many. Excellent photo's--thanks for them all and 2 more to add to my list!
=)
Very nice, Marie - looks like a very dark heirloom variety I have also incidentally called "Marie"! LOL
My hyacienths are blooming alright.. Right in my kitchen.. lol I bought some at Lowes a few weeks ago and didnt get them planted. Now they are blooming in my kitchen in their pots. Man I have to say they smell incrediable!!!
How funny! I am now going to have to hunt through old receipts to see if it is indeed "Marie" :o)
Yeah aren't hyacinths great? One of my favorites. A fragrance like no other. Lilies however are pretty close in the fragrance department. That is my other favorite!
Those are all nice Steve--I kind of like the way "Vuurbaak" looks!
Steve those are beautiful. I am going to push my zone limit this year and try some lilies.
mine had multiple stalks
Thanks Debbie & Marie.
I have several with multiple stalks too. Could be a sign your bulb is starting to divide
Nery, not sure why you're missing some. Did all of your "Red Diamonds" come back?
I bought 10 City and 5 Red Diamond. I was looking at a pic from last year and unless my eyes are tricking me, it seems I have less this year. The area where planted gets fierce afternoon sun, so it is possible some might have died of thirst. I dunno.
And while I remember bulbs looking good when I received them, don't know if maybe some were immature/weak. But I will be buying more now that I've determined these are great "fend for yourself" bulbs.
I have had great luck with hyacinths, Nery. Deep loamy soil, dry soil in summer, and an eastern exposure will likely help. Nt sure what types of exact conditions your planting area has, but as you have seen they actually do quite well here,
