Inviting plants for full shade?

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

I must have pruned it because I remember it being as tall as the shed and so bushy that you couldn't see the ugliness behind the shed. I don't remember pruning it though. I've been on several forums where I had to admit that I didn't remember something. I'm really not losing my mind. In the last year, my grandmother, my uncle and my best friend died. Apparently grieving has really messed with my memory. I'm coping -- no sympathy required. It's just too bad that I can't remember so much of the last year!

Dallas, TX

Pod I have no desire to start planting Ollas, as I have enough to plant. :)
... and yes I do love those big leaf plants, cant I just plant one or two? ... and if it get too much I can always sell them. lol Everything i plant is a trial which makes gardening expensive and more interesting for me. Thank God, I only have cats to care for. lol

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

30 years ago I used to wholesale from marshall pottery. I didn't even know they were still in business. This was outside of Houston where they had a place. Those wonderful white heavy clay pots...

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia ~ plant ollas ~ it might grow into an olla orchard. Look at all the mo-olla you could make ~ LOL Has the Arum arrived yet?

Gessiegail ~ Marshall Potteries is still in business. They don't have much for a website tho. Can't access their inventory.

I posted for olla ideas in trash to treasure forum. One suggested using the unglazed wine chiller container. Hmmmmm! 8 )

Dallas, TX

No the Arum has not arrived yet. I have to wait until Pam fill a tray. Maybe I will find a full grown one by them, but I really need to plant more trees, I want to build a Woodland garden. lol

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia ~ do you have a large area? Finding trees shouldn't be a problem. Seems every time I research a plant I like, it will grow too big for my space... LOL

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm wondering if the ollas would be good for all the hostas I've bought on the coops. :)
High Country Gardens has them ,at a premium price though....
I'm wanting to put some trees in this year for more shade too...

I think they would be perfect for hostas. I'm going to be looking at clay pottery in a different way this summer.

Pod, have you tried to contact the missionary group that's featured in the article?

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

When I was at Lowe's yesterday, I saw some kind of new thing for slow watering. It was in a box and I couldn't tell much from the picture, but it looked like an inflatable inner tube or something. It must have tiny holes for drips. It was labeled as a product for new trees. I didn't see a price, but might work the same way as the ollas.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Grrr! I did a cursory flip thru HCG catalogues and missed the ollas. I was trying hard not to lust after more plants. Now, I will have to go look closer ~ LOL

No, I didn't contact the missionary group. I suspect the unglazed clay would be fragile to ship. I do think this item will come into its' own with the trend toward water conservation. Rather along the lines of rain harvesting.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Here we are talking watering when some of you are might near flooding ~ sorry...

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

That's ok. It's always either drought or flood. Nothing much in between.

Christi

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't have to worry about watering this week, looked at my rain gauge, over 2 inches so far.Pond got nice rain water, tis a good thing.
Sorry people are getting rained out, like you said, either drought or flood.....

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

My little koi pond is up to the very top. If it rains anymore it will run over. Hope the fish are staying near the bottom.

C

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I've never lost a fish to running over, only to the critters.LOL

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

So far, we are on the eastern edge and only 1/4 inch. Not enough to wash the yellow pollen off.

Pbtx, I have seen those before and forgot about them. I may need one. I planted a gingko walked away to grab the hose and realized I was 10' too short to water.

I saw on the news some area have received 5" today, didn't really start to pour until this evening. Have to leave the house at 5am, hope I can get out of the drive.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Quoting:
realized I was 10' too short
How TALL are you anyway? LOL

I'm 6'2", but I was standing in a 4' deep hole.LOL

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Be really careful, Lynn. It is still raining and we are in 5" range now.

C

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

We aren't at 5" yet out here. But if we get another inch tonight, my front door will flood. :(

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Here's hoping all have survived. Keep your noses pointing up! We didn't get much water but about 6-8 inches of wind. Whew! Still blowing this morning.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

We had the wind during the night. Lots of very large things blown around everywhere. Minor. Many people have lost a lot. In the 40's today.

Christi

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

We had 3 1/4 inches of rain and no wind damage, so we feel very lucky.
Josephine.

Dallas, TX

.... my water hose busted about 2 or 3 in the morning, I heard the blast, jumped out of bed, went to the back to peep out window, I saw all this water, but I thought it was storming, the next morning when I came out the back door, I almost died. Water was gushing all over the carport, all down the alley was flooded, out onto the streets, I saw water as far as I could see ... I cried all the way to work

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh Sylvia, i am so sorry, bless you, not only will it cause damage, but it will also cost you money for all that water. Sometimes it can be really tough.
Hugs, Josephine.

Dallas, TX

I called the water department, they told me to write to the adjustment department and see what they will do,

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, that might help, I hope so.

Syvia, that just stinks. I do hope they will adjust it for you. How long before you'll have an answer from the water dept?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh Syl ~ if it weren't for bad luck, we'd have no luck at all!

Pursue the water dept. I have been told they may possibly discount it or at the least, allow you to pay a smaller monthly amount till it's taken care off.

Just think, by summer we'll be wishing for water...

Dallas, TX

I haven't written them yet, I will send off in the morning. Actually I dont know what to say ... maybe that I am old and cant see? :) Thanks Guys

Hey Pod don't you think you had better get over to that HELLEBORUS Coop? I just got twenty.

Hey I have another question, what are these? Are they Iris's? My friend is digging them out of her front yard.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

NO on the Hellebores ~ not until I am ready! You are being a temptress!! I can get in enough trouble without your help ~ LOL

Your "what are these" don't exactly look like Iris but can't really tell. Iris have corms rather than bulbs and the leaf stalks of an Iris are a dusty dull color. These look more like a crinum or lily. Can you post a photo of the bulb?

Dallas, TX

No its not a Crinum, I just had a in service on that at the last CSRU. and no they are not bulbs, its more of a corm. I already have one thread going for NOIDs. I didn't want to start another one. lol I am still working on stuff to trade, but I would love to tell people what it is. lol I have identified Asters, Golden Rod, Dragon Flower and something else no one is quite sure of and now this!. I am trying to find something someone might want, nobody wants Hostas but me. Next Year I will have Helleborus, they multiply fast. but the ones I had lost ground when I moved. I just got six from Spring Hill and girll, you wont believe this, but I am eyeing one that cost 39.95. lol Its a beauty! has a 24" spread and 2 ft tall! Its got to be a show stopper! Its in the this catalog called Heronswood. I don't know why they sent this book to me:(

will try to get a better picture of the root.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Can't imagine why you get that book ~ LOL You are a likely victim! May want to work up a grab bag trade... anybodys guess?

Dallas, TX

How will that work Pod? Where will you do it?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

You could list a bunch of NOID plants for trade with others NOID plants??!? Kind of a potluck trade ~ LOL

Dallas, TX

Oh my! That is a wonderful idea! ... you think maybe we should start a thread for swaping NOIDs? LOL where is Sheila? Pod you are a nut!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Syl ~ have you seen this thread? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/825065/
Here are a group of folks that might join in on the NOID swap.. LOL

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia, my hostas are looking better than I thought they would, so I am definitely interested in hostas. My asters are up too and I can bring some of them.

That noid above looked like iris to me. Can you get a better picture?

Dallas, TX

Marylee you are just too much, I am going to stop worrying about you and your plants. They always come back, yet you worry year after year! lol

Pod I don't know what that thread was about, but it was driving me crazy. They must have their own little private joke. lol Mary lee, i think they are Iris too, I have some on the porch someone gave me at the last swap. I am going to have stuff to trade soon and I have loads of seeds.
