New to Lilys - What can I buy now that will flower this year

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

Like I said, I am new to growing lilys, but I am definitely interested in planting some. My daughter (9 months) is named Lillian (we call her Lilly) and I wanto to plant some for her.

What can I buy that I can plant soon that will flower this year? Anything? I looked around and really couldn't find anything this general.

Thanks! Jennifer

Check out my little Lilly below ; )

If I'm not mistaken (and I'm not an expert), just about any lily bulbs you can get, you plant this spring and have blooms this summer. I just ordered about 250 on several co-ops here on DG that will be arriving in spring. There are tons of websites to buy from (check DG's Watchdog for good companies), individuals on ebay sell and local home improvement and garden centers will have them soon too.
I know that people who know more about this will come to the thread soon and direct you.
Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl!

Hi Jennifer, welcome to the lily forum. Love your little Lilly!

3gardeners is correct ~ any lilies planted in Spring will bloom in the summer. Since these will be your first lilies, look around locally. You'll probably find them as bulbs packed in peat or already potted and growing. Asiatics are the most carefree, and orientals are very fragrant.

Some day you might want to get your own 'Miss Lily' ;) http://farawayflowers.vstore.ca/product_info.php/pName/miss-lily

Thanks for the help and the link. All I need is another obsession, but I swore I would only buy enough for a small (maybe 5' across) round bed.

That's almost 20 sq. ft. ~ you can pack a lot of lilies in there. Not that I'm trying to get you in kind of trouble, of course. :)

Moby, that is beautiful! What is the pink and white one at the bottom of the frame?

I believe that's 'Tramp' ~ it has the most intoxicating fragrance of any Oriental lily I've grown.
