Bramble Flower

Bakersfield, CA

My former gardener killed or stunted a number of shrubs and flowers with Roundup. I have replaced them all, but one. Pictured is that flowering plant that I do not remember the name of. Sorry this is all that was left of it to photograph. I am wondering if anyone can identify it. It was a perennial looping (sort of sagebrush like), a foot tall with intense red half- inch flowers, not (as I recall) in clusters. I do not remember the small leaves).

Ummm...unfortunately all I can tell from the picture is that it's dead, I think to get an ID you're going to need more than that, once they're dead like that there's not much to distinguish what sort of plant it used to be. Obviously you can't get a better picture of it, but if you can give us a little more info maybe someone can make some guesses. What shape were the flowers? And what did the leaves look like? Was it in full sun? Is it something that you've seen in a lot of people's gardens, or was this a one of a kind thing that you hadn't seen anywhere else? Did the leaves or flowers have any scent? I know you probably won't remember all those things, but any bits of info you do remember would be helpful.

Thanks for your reply. It has been a couple of years (I have had annuals in its place). But, pictured here is the best of my recollection. There were eight of them, half scarlet and half deep purple. They all were in either full or afternoon sun, except the one pictured which was in shade except for a hour or so in late afternoon. All thrived. I have not seen this flower elsewhere. Do not know about the scent.

I remembered I have some old pictures of my yard. Here is a blowup of the subject flower. I got the leaves wrong, as well as the flower (the petals are wider and fewer). The flower is still 1/2". But, the color was an intense pink.

I blew it up further. Unfortunately, there are two flowers overlapping.

Sorry...I don't recognize it. I feel like it's something I should know, but without a better shot of the flowers I don't think I'll figure it out. If nobody else here recognizes it, you might try posting your photos on the Plant ID forum too--if this is a plant that is grown commonly outside of California you've got a better chance of someone recognizing it in that forum.

Thanks for taking a look and for the suggestion. I have posted on Plant Identification.
