A Wedding in July

(Zone 4a)

Oh yes that sounds beautiful!!!! I touch of red with all that white would be beautiful and a very nice contrast - I think they would stand out beautifully!!!

Deb, since you have a favorite local nursery I would suggest that you contact them now and tell them what you are looking for. Maybe they can get you some small plant starts at a lower price and you can grow them out for the wedding. They may have some great suggestions as to what plants would do well for you and the wedding. You would have to do the potting up but that might be worth it. And you might be able to get some plants that you would like in your garden.

I would ask them for suggestions about pots too. I wonder if you can get used pots and wrap them in the florists colored foil or something else.

(Zone 4a)

Lobelia is the name I think....I think.....anyhow I think they are pretty!

Hi Elsie, good points - the nursery opens in March, I'll be away the first week, but will talk to Jack as soon as I can. I'm now thinking of how and what I can use there, and then bring it home for my garden! Double duty flowers.
Dawn, I like Lobelia too.

If you can contact someone from the nursery now, you could ask for extra flats of red & white combos now while they are planting/ordering their bulk.
Burpee's has these lovely impatiens and appropriately named for a wedding!

Yes, punch and cherry vanilla!
I went out to just look at seeds, and picked up a bunch. Can't hurt to try. Impatiens, zinnias, marigold, nasturtiums, candytuft. I e-mailed the nursery too, they open March12th.

Perfect deb....i've been doing a little reading and found that Zinnias will bloom from seed within 7 weeks.
This little beauty will bloom in 70 DAYS from seed:
"Jaio Scarlet Eye blooms continuously all summer, through the worst weather Mother Nature has to offer. And the old blooms remain on the plants, vibrant for weeks, so that a fully-blooming plant is simply awash in rich color. The blooms are about 2 inches across, flanked by long, pointed, glossy leaves of deep green. Showy and stylish!"

Deb, I think your ideas sound great! It will be just lovely! Here is a look at some verbena I have in a basket. There is a gorgeous bright red you could use instead of this fuchsia color. I have found you need to keep deadheading to keep it fully in bloom........and it requires full sun. I really like that impatiens selection that Celeste found. I think it all depends on whether you are working with sun or shade, but you should have some good choices that will be in full bloom by that date. So glad to see you are enjoying the journey here!!

My sister lives about 2 hours away, I want to go and look at her yard - haven't seen it since Christmas, and start planning. It's fun.

(Zone 4a)

You were right debilu it was bacopa that I was thinking of!!!

Have you made any decisions on anything yet??

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Hi Dawn!
Well, I'm going to get some flats of red and white petunias, bacopa, impatiens.
I stopped and looked at red seeds, and picked up every packet of red seeds that said they bloomed with 50-70 days - so we'll see what happens there. It was only a few(?) packets, but by the time I got starter stuff too, well, it adds up!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Nice wedding present, if you ask me!!!!

(Zone 4a)

Nice selection debilu!!!! I am sure your flowers will be perfect for the occasion!!!

My sister has a large back yard - I really want red everywhere you look! I'll post some pics of the results.

Red zinnias would be fantastic for cut flowers because they're so nice and big and showy, but you'd have to start them now from seed and fertilize the heck out of them to get them to bloom in time.

White achillea or feverfew would be quick and easy to grow, good as filler for cut flowers.

Maybe you could buy white spider mums as cut flowers from a grocery store? They're usually nice and big without a lot of cost.

There are also oriental lilies that are white, or pinky-red and white, which would be blooming at about the right time, you might find some of them as cut flowers.

Do you have any farmer's markets around you? If you do, you might get a local farmer to grow something for you, like gladiolas, or maybe they would have some helpful suggestions, at least.

I like your idea of pots of red and white petunias, etc. That sounds so pretty and simple, and I'm sure you'll get great comments.

Thanks windbalm, I do have both red and white zinnia seeds - I plan to start them as soon as I'm back from vacation. I did pick up some cypress and cardinal vine seeds to try to cover the fence. They don't seem to be invasive for zone 5. I'm going to try to get them to cover an arch also.

Have you considered red salvia? There are some very showy red varieties that are pretty easy to find as plants in the spring.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Good idea windbalm. You've got to plant a bunch together - they don't spread or make good centerpieces (IMHO) but they are VERY RED!

I picked up some red celosia for the center of a pot with white zinnias around it. Of course, these are seed packets - so not sure how well they'll do. I've never done much with seeds, I usually buy plants.

Well the wedding was beautiful, I didn't take pictures with flowers, but I do have the wedding party. My sister did a nice job decorating her back yard - it looked really nice.
Here's the bride and groom.
