I am in zone 5B and came across some info, while cruising Google, that VL may be hardy in my area? Anyone out there know if this is true?
Thank you! Jan
Hardiness of Voodoo Lily?
That's a whole different critter than most of us grow ~ here's some info http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2055/
Very cool flower, but I prefer my 'fragrances' to be on the sweeter side. :)
It is a weed in Victoria, grows like mad there. Zone 8. I grew one inside in zone 4b. When it bloomed, opened the door and threw it as far as I could into the pasture.

I got a HUGE bulb in a plant trade and it had 4 smaller baby bulbs on it that I removed to give to another DGer and it's growing a couple more baby bulbs. I had the momma VL bulb wrapped in newspaper and discovered it growing when I was checking my bulb stash in the basement. It was wrapped up, no light, no "warmth", no water...so it's now unwrapped, not potted yet, and it's already 18" tall and some other "growths" are also starting. I didn't realize that it's aka the "stink lily" until I googled VL's. Soooo, it shall be planted far from the house, and perhaps DH won't smell the smell (yeah, right!!!). Besides, it's only supposed to stink for a day... :)

I wonder if they would deter deer since they stink so bad?
I saw my first one at 16 years old in school. The biolgy teacher was given one--apparently as a joke. I stopped by each day as it grew quickly . The teacher & I wondered at the bloom. i arrived one morning to a horrible stench enveloping the entire floor of the school. The Voodoo Lily was out in a snowdrift, but I'll never forget the smell...
