CLOSED: Huge grubs and root borers

Edinburg, IL(Zone 6a)

I just read that root borers like iris tubers. I recall digging up two discusting white (larger than usual) grubs late this past fall. They were about the size of my little finger and were found dangerously close to the iris. I fear they are going to do some major damage. The ground is frozen now. Can someone tell me a few things about these monsters? 1. Will grub killer kill my earth worms? 2. Will the grub killer penetrate the wood mulch and fabric weed barrier? 3. Can I put grub killer down before the ground is fully thawed?

As far as I know, most grubs in your (mine, anyway...) lawn and garden are chafer beetle larvae, like june bugs or Japanese beetles. Iris boreres are a moth larva, pinkish with a brown head and about an inch and a half long. Hopefully your pinky finger is much larger than that!... your grubs sound like they might be some other, larger beetles. Or moths?

Here's a good page about Iris borers:

Sorry, I can't answer your questions. Maybe somone will know here, but you might get better advice about control in the Iris forum, or Garden Pests and Diseases forum. Good luck with your Irises!
