Received a weeping crab pruned about 30'' from ground in '06. The branches were longer than this. In '07 the branches got to 6'. But the main trunk is same size (height). This is worse than weeping. Should I try to "make" one branch a leader or will the tree grow taller? I've suspected a packer making the tree short to fit the box.
Weeping crab
Depending on the variety, it would probably s-l-o-w-l-y grow taller, but it would be much faster to create a new leader. In this case, since the branches are so long, it would be relatively easy and quick. Just be careful to bend the new leader slowly, on a warm day when it is pliable. Stake it up and, for faster growth, trim off most of the other existing branches to force new branches off the new leader. What is the variety, and is it a grafted tree (can you tell)?
