I don't know your soil pH or moisture levels (nor composition of your forest canopy), but there are quite a few shrub residents of mixed mesophytic forests. Some good wildlife partners include:

Euonymus americanus strawberrybush, heart's a-burstin'
Viburnum acerifolium mapleleaf viburnum
Viburnum dentatum arrowwood viburnum
Asimina triloba pawpaw
Vaccineum spp. blueberry family
