Have you done something stupid?

Chesapeake, VA

That reminds me. Once a strange plant came up in my front flowerbed. I let it grow, because I was curious. Up it came, a stalk with leaves. Then knobby things started appearing on the stem. Eventually I realized...it was a brussels sprout. All the knobs were maturing at the same time. So, I harvested them and had a delightful meal.

Then I read...old-time brussels sprouts had knobs that matured at the same time. Modern ones don't.

Why didn't I let it grow up and make seeds? I pulled it up after the meal, because there were no more knobs on it.

Dumb bunny me!

Instead of Jack and the Beanstalk, it's brightstar and the broccoli tree.
Don't you wish you knew a couple years ago what you do now about all the seeds and stuff. I've thrown so much stuff away without ever even thinking about seeds.
I've been wondering why not take a small section somewhere it isn't really too visiable and plant things just for seeds. You know 1 few dianthius just to get seeds from, etc.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Lorraine, I have about a third of them out of the greenhouse now. We could still get down into the low to mid 30's. I am just going to have to keep my eye on the weather report. My husband is going to really complain if I have to haul all of these brugs. into his precious garage. This week we are not forcasted to get below 39 so if the night temps. hold up for about three more weeks, I should be be O.K. I actually have two New Orleans Lady's and a Genevieve blooming out under the patio cover right now.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Wouldn't they be ok as long as it doesn't get below freezing. My daughter in law takes blankets and things and puts them over hers if she thinks it's going to freeze.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

They will be fine as long as we don't get down to freezing. I am going to pick up some frost row cover to put over them tomorrow.

HAVE I DONE SOMETHING STUPID???
OHHHHHHHHHHHH hahahahahahah, stupid is my life.
I am starting to move my seeds that have sprouted to the table over under the lights, and I seem to have overlooked that some seeds germinate quicker than others, so I am cutting the plastic cells apart and moving the ones that have sprouted to another flat. What a pain, what was I thinking? or not thinking,,,, heheh Hubby is at that store right now buying chamomile tea for me to use for watering, hoping it will prevent the dreaded damp off.
::I can't believe I forgot about germination rates::,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Get yourself in here Tammy. This is the place to get it off your chest, lol and give us a good laugh. Or I guess you can just laugh at us

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

See guspuppy, you are my long lost twin!!! I am doing the exact same thing. Only with the stupid little peat ones. And of course I didn't have sense enough to put on it the plant name, so now I've got a room full of stuff I'll have to wait forever to find out what it means. I've been to that seed and seedling site with the pictures. Hasn't helped much.
I bet at least once in their lifetime, everyone has "lost names of plants"

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I just think this is funny, not so much stupid. My daughter and her husband are sheriff's deputies and Gilmer is known for all the drug trade, mostly meth.
There is so much country in this county, you could hide out forever and no one would know. Plus, it's a big county, not enough deputies, so you can imagine all the places they never see.
She saw my lights hanging down over my plants and said"Mom, you better be careful, they have a helicopter now that shows those lights up and they're gonna think you're growing pot. So I laughed and then a few days later, a friend called and she had just gotten a visit from Sheriff because of her lights. She's my age so I can just see their faces when this 60 year old opened the door and showed them all her hollyhocks!!!!
Any way, if you don't hear from me, you'll know I was arrested for growing marigolds and petunias

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I've got one :) I was WS and just going along just fine when I saw two packs of seed that weren't written down, well I had sown all three seeds in one jug! I do this every year!!! Never pays to rush lol No matter how hard I try from year to year it always gets me sooner or later! I planted several columbine plants in the fall last year that I won't know what they are until they bloom :) I wonder what it'll be this year cause I know I'm gonna do it!

I love this thread LOL

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I've got one like that Lorraine, I had tomato plants sitting on my window sills until I could put them outside, I had real long windows in this house so there was a lot, one day I was in the kitchen and looked up and there was a cop looking thru my window! LOL

Warren, OH(Zone 5b)

oh this just cracks me up, I love it when someone other than me screws up, ROTFLMAO

Thanks... I don't post over here often though I am a seed-a-holic.

The first time I tried my hand at starting seeds it was with a bunch of beauties
my mom brought back from her tour of Scotland. I went out and bought a bag
of seed germination mix & a few trays with lids. I put in the soil, watered it,
put the seeds in, covered them and then put the lids on. Then I put them all
outside. They baked. I essentially solarized that soil. Eeek

A more recent bone headed move was putting all my saved seeds on the
dining room table. I spread out newspaper and then put each seed in a pile
with a piece of paper labeling them. Did I mention I have three house cats?
That really enjoy rolling in stuff like leaves and seeds? My Zephyr was
walking around with seeds I'd promised someone from DG stuck in her fur.
I rescued enough to mail all and put all remaining seeds (those not in her fur)
into another room. With a door.

LOL Tammy must be a trip having cats in the house, I have a dog and when I brought him in from outside, this was an outside dog, the first day I was sorting seeds that I had collected outside and laid them on the window seats in the tv room, well I had them in plastic 1 oz. shot glasses all cleaned and ready to pack up and I heard a crunch and I wondered what it was, I went into the tv room and Max and crunched all of the plastic shot glasses and seeds were all over the floor!

cornwall, ON(Zone 4b)

hi all - I have giggled and laughed all through this thread, because except for Tammy's cats I have done all of these things and a few more. As a corrections/peace officer, I have often been told someone is going to think I am growing 'pot' because you can see the grow lights on in the basement at night , and because I have planted things and had pots growing under my neighbors large evergreen next door.
The worst thing though was when my father was still alive, he'd start his tomatoes in the basement and baby them until it was time to put them out. This one year , I was trying to get rid of a particularly bad weed in the driveway for them and was spraying it with Killex every couple of days. When I was done, I would put the bottle of mixed Killex in the laundry room on top of the water heater. It was just a reg. spray bottle with a little tape on it wth killex written on the tape. My mother knew where i had put it. My Dad was in a rush one day and when he went to refill his water bottle for the plants he grabbed that bottle thinking that my mother had it for ironing and doused all his tomatoes that were a week or two away from being put out. Later he told Mom that he had used her water and she had to tell him what he had done. Needless to say, I received a call and was given proper heck and told to go and find two trays of tomatoes the next day . We laughed about it later but boy, was he ever angry that day. So I can laugh and sympathize with all of our blunders.

Sandra, my hubbie is a corrections officer too! I have done alot of boneheaded things while gardening ,the two most recent : Last year my two hardy kiwis I had planted went through their first winter and last spring the male looked dead and the female was happily budding out. I waited and after a bit i figured it was dead so I pulled it up and sure enough it was covered in buds at the crown. I hastily replanted it and it actually grew! The other one was when I planted foxtail lily . The bulbs/roots look like big starfish. there were no instructions on what was up or down. I did my best guess and after there was no growth I dug one up and sure enough they were upside down and trying to find the light. I put them right but only one ever came up. Poor things.

somewhere, PA

Lebug - I think our pets like to enjoy our hobbies too. :-)

Sandra - Your poor dad! And poor you. Did you have some mater's to give him?

Well now if you go into the realm of bulbs Lavendar... the first time I got bulbs,
I planted them all pointy side down. Crocus and tulips. Figured it made sense that
way somehow. I proudly told my dad about planting the bulbs. And I must have
asked him for assurance that I'd done it right 'cause he told me I planted them upsidedown.
Amazingly, I did get blooms that spring.

lol! I can relate to this thread! I think I have made most of the same errors (well with the exception of milk & scrambled eggs!) This is a great thread for me to follow, however I dont think it will prevent me from making any mistakes. I seem to make the same onces over and over again, even whilst I am trying desparately not to!

I have written the names on the tray domes, only I removed ALL of the dome lids to water all at once, not only did I not know which way the lids went back on, I didnt know which lids belonged to which trays! This year, I have no lids as they are all in a greenhouse, so I marked the trays with masking tape. Only, I forgot to mark some rows, and some of the writing has faded (dont use pencil!) and now even the masking tape is peeling.
someday I'll learn! :)

cornwall, ON(Zone 4b)

Yes Tammy I replaced his tomatoes that day, while I could still find them. Paid Premium prices though. I never felt so bad, knowing how much time and effort he had put into them and how many times he had gone up and down those stairs. I knew better than to have a poison in the house also, but it was still frosty at night and I didn't want it to freeze.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I not only have cats to help me out, I have "just turned 3" grandsons that live about 100 feet away, so I get lots of visits. Had my bags of different marigolds sitting out and made the mistake of leaving the room for a few minutes. When I got back, there were all my seeds mixed together and 2 little smiles. "We fic it Nanny"
Good thing they're so cute.

lol! gotta love the lil helpers huh?!

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I feel SO MUCH BETTER having read this!! The *latest* bonehead thing I did was when I went to plant some daff bulbs in a spot I thought would be PERFECT. Turns it out was - for the Surprise Lilies that were already there. ....I'm a rather enthusiastic digger with a Hori Hori knife.... After the first one sacrificed itself to my inept location selection I was more careful :) (We won't count starting poppies inside, because I was just too excited to get something planted - LOL)

Mesilla Park, NM

These are so neat to read. My first trade....lol.. a lady from work sent some bulbs with DH and said they were pregnant onions.. lots of bulbs, some didn't look the same but I didn't notice at the time. Well a lady said she would send me some Crinium bulbs and I said I'd send her some Agaves and thought, well, I'll surprise her and send her some pregnant onions too.

When she got her box, she asked me why I had sent her the crinium bulbs back? I told her that they were pregnant onions.. and she said ...no, they are criniums and thank you cuz they are really big.. I did tell her they were the size of melons..lol. now I know better.

For three years I tried to grow hollyhocks.. and there is a weed that looks alot like the holly hock seedlings (only I did not know that) and DH and I would pull every single one out.. And I kept on planting Hollyhocks, thinking that they were not germinating for three years, can you imagine.. then one day I finally decided to grow them inside, and realized we had been pulling them out and if I didn't, DH did on his weed rounds..lol

Now, I say, let it be, let it be.

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I have one more that was a scarey bonehead incident. I was drying datura pods on my sunroom table well out of reach of my schnauzer Ruger aka the mouth. I went into the house for coffee and came back out and he had chewed up all the pods with seeds everywhere ( they were pretty dry). He had climbed on my chair and the table to get them. Long story short he got a tablespoon of peroxide and I got my seeds back. Yuck!

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Wow! Good thing you "caught" him before too long - I wonder if he learned anything other than to stay away from mommy when she's got the peroxide out - LOL!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL he learned that alright. But he still chews whatever he can get away with! Here is a picture of the little rotten kid... he also does iris bed removal ...

Thumbnail by lavender4ever
(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

aw, he's such a cute 'rotten kid' tho! Does he do weed removal? I've got plenty of those! lol!-why cant birds eat the weed seeds and leave my flower seeds alone?!

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I pulled weeds all over the place last year but some I just didn't get around too. They just kept growing and turned into pretty pretty wildflowers. Hate that. I also planted flower seeds in a bed around a tree, started coming up and like the hollyhocks pulled them up, then noticed I had pulled up more of the ones I had pulled up in the yard. That's my job, running around pulling up perfectly good flowers

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

lol! I was whacking weeds tonight -crossing my fingers that I wasnt whacking any plants that were disguising as weeds! Have a clean slate now, so if it grows after I plant these seeds, then its staying cause I aint pullin no more weeds!

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh, where to begin? The first time I did seed trays, I started about 30 different types of plants. I didn't know how fast they'd germinate, and ran into the problem of some getting too tall for the lid, while others hadn't sprouted yet. Sigh.

I also thought I'd get smart, and keep track of what I planted in what tray, so I labeled the lids with masking tape and also drew a chart in my garden journal. I was afraid I'd mix up the lids, so I put dots of nail polish on both the tray and lid. So the red dot on the lid matched the red dot end of tray one, pink dot lid matched pink dot end of tray 2, etc. I worked so hard on those darned trays! Then a friend told me to set them outside for a week to "harden off" before planting, and I left the lids on and cooked the little darlings, after 2 months of work. I just sat down on the driveway and bawled my eyes out!

Carson City, NV(Zone 6b)

Sorry to hear about your babies. It's always frustrating to work so hard on rearing plants only to have them all die when you think you are doing something good for them. I learned the hard way too.

I pulled the mail out of the box today and saw the corner of a bubble mailer sticking out and thought "Woohoo! new seeds!" When I got back to the house to open it, I discovered it was the envelope I just sent out for a trade. I had forgotten to put the new address label on it and it was still addressed to me from the previous trade I had recieved in it. Dang.

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

PS Gourd, I snorted coffee when I read about your beets. My boys ran to get me a kleenex and wanted to know what was so funny, and then I had to search for a picture of a beet so they'd understand what I was talking about. Guess I need to expand their vegetal horizons.

Yeah; I bought them too ... sigh

Ya';ll are all too crazy. Have you noticed going through here how many people have done the exact same thing./
I'd cry too Book, I did the same thing with the tape thing. I can't tell you how many times I've taken containers with the seeds in to winter sow and carried too many and dropped them. You'd think I'd learn.

Oh no, Kaitlan, think of all those stamps
