BocaBob,
What variety is your watermelon? I have Bush Sugar Baby to sow when the weather gets warmer. What temps should I aim for to sow the seeds? Also, how many do you have per EB? Finally, I have 7 EBs. 5 will contain tomatoes. I'm trying to decide the best use of the other two. Regarding the watermelons. The Bush babies grow on a vine that'll only get to 3-1/2 to 4' long. I have the option to grow them in the ground and let them sprawl. What's your suggestion here? EB vs. ground for the watermelons.

Thanks!

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

I have 5 sangria watermelon plants ready to put in and I was wondering exactly the same thing. Should I take up an EB, or try the ground ( which I havent had a whole lot of success with.)

There were two big news pieces I saw this week on how expensive veggies could get by summer. Im getting serious about figuring out how to space the timing of these in the EB's also, so I have food longer.

Gymgirl and gardenglory- This is my 1st attempt at growing watermellons. The variety is crimson Sweet and I'm growing them in an Earth Box and letting them roam on the ground. They seem very happy in the EB

what kind of mix are those spag. squash in.?

Ijamsville, MD(Zone 6b)

I love your updates thanks! How are those hydostackers balanced? Like when the zuc's get big and heavier will they tilt or uproot from the pot? I like those 8 ball ones, the perfect size for smaller families.

gardenglory- 60%peat moss, 30% vermeculite, 10% perlite. That is my mix for all my Earthbox's and reg planters.

Boca Raton, FL(Zone 10a)

Kim - The hydrostackers are supposed to be on a pole into the ground for stability. But I have them on a pole in a bucket with cement. I hope everything will be ok. Time will tell, but I will react quickly if I have a problem.

The eight ball zucs are great. had one the other night for dinner. Nice size to work with.

Im for sure going to try to mix my own. I stuck my hand in one of my EB's to make sure the top was wet and I didnt like the thick hard packed feeling of the mix.

Boca Raton, FL(Zone 10a)

gardenglory - I just took out of a EB a tomato plant that was in there for 2 months. The mix was soft and crumbly and nice and damp. That mix I mentioned above is a professional grade mix by Fafard Company. It comes in a 2.8 cu.ft. bag. They put a "charger" in the mix (whatever that means), so when you wet it, the PH is 6.5. Just perfect for most vegetables. Of course, you could mix your own from those 3 ingredients and get a real nice mix.

They make top notch stuff. Its very pricey tho, as I can only find it around here in small bags.

Boca Raton, FL(Zone 10a)

gardenglory - The 2.8 cu.ft. bag down here is $8.00 Seems reasonable. What's the price and size up your way?

BocaBob

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

Totally reasonable. Do you buy it regular retail. I would love about 20 bags of that.

Boca Raton, FL(Zone 10a)

gardenglory - I did a retailer search for the product. Here it is:

Sheffields Nursery

I bought mine at ProSourceOne, a retailer for farmers down here.
