CLOSED: Bugs? Eggs? What Am I?

New London, CT(Zone 6a)

Hi All,
I'm new & hope I'm posting to the correct forum.

This was a healthy tree until the summer of '05, when I found - whatever this is - on it.
Notice the yellowing leaves because of it (leaves shed everywhere, by the way).

Summer of '06, from what I could see, whatever this is didn't return but the tree still shed like crazy!
I'm not even sure WHAT kind of tree it is but it's becoming a nuisance.

Any input would be greatly appreciated as I am not looking forward to the cleanup this summer! ;)

Those look like aphids (just not the more common green ones). If you don't see them any more you shouldn't have to treat for them; the yellowing is probably unrelated. I can't really tell from the picture what the plant is (maybe a willow relative?) Does it have foliage right now?

My hunt is some type of willow too. And yes those are aphids. Mild soapy water spray will kill them on contact. May have to repeat the process 4-7 days as needed as the eggs will recur when the temp. get warmer.

Thanks for your replies.

No, this tree doesn't have any foilage yet but every summer it sheds (yellow leaves) something terrible.
There's 2 in our back yard but only the one that had the aphids yellows.
