Yesterday afternoon about 4pm I started some of my spring veggies in Park's Bio Sponges on a heat mat in the GH. I went out to the GH at about 9am this morning, and noticed one of the Kohl Rabi seeds had sprouted! In all the years I've been planting seeds, I've NEVER had one germinate in less than 24 hrs. Has this happened to anyone else? No other seeds (I planted 100) show any sign of life...
Weird thing
Way to go!
I've had it happen once or twice--definitely not common, but it's not completely unheard of.
Echium sprouts in 24-48 hours for me. One of my faves : )
I recently experienced some digitalis sprouting in 48 hours and was duly impressed (and, of course, patting myself on the back)....but 24, wow!
I've also gotten two day Oenothera germination.
I'm going to have to try Kohlrabi for instant gratification!
Not sure it's the Kohlrabi, plantaholic186---none of the other 29 Kohlrabi seeds have germinated, and it's been 2 whole days! I was fixing to take a butane torch to the thing figuring it might be dangerous (like "the Little Shop of Horrors"). Interestingly though, the cotyledons haven't grown any since sprouting. It's probably putting all its energy into sending its roots to China...
I've had the frozen cotyledon thing happen as well. Oddly enough, they finally sprout true leaves if I pot them up and start a very weak fish emulsion fertilizer. I shouldn't need to until the cotys die, but it does seem to make a difference. I had a Clematis that sat with cotyledons for a full two weeks, until I realized that I had sunk the seedling over the first meristem bud. Uncovered it, and the Clem sprang forth.
Huh - now getting a Clematis seed to sprout at all is almost as impressive as the 24 hour wonder - or was it a stroke of luck? I've heard it can be months...
I did as well! I even started doing all sorts of complicated stratification stuff. These are seeds collected from my garden, and I stupidly forgot which plant they came from! I know they are either C. hexapetala or C. jouiniana 'Mrs. Robert Brydon'. I guess I'll have to wait for a while to know which it is : )
I am trying C. ladhakhiana seeds, but nothing yet, so maybe the hex. or jouin. are especially easy.
Heck, you could just have "the touch"... heh... >wink&smile< ...
HA! I wish- but I am trying some challenging seeds like Tacca cvs., Stewartia p., Acer p., Franklinia a., etc.
Hardly 24 hour pop-ups!
Oh- I forgot Alcea, which is another 2 day wonder : )
I *guess*! Is that the "Black Bat" Tacca? (Or am I totally befuddled, as usual?)
Yes- I'm a sucker for bizarre flowers : )
Tacca chantrieri has germinated, but Tacca nivea and T. integrifolia are making me wait.

I guess- Best of luck with them!
